About the Author
George B. Rybicki received his B.S. degree in physics from Carnegie-Mellon University and his Ph.D. in physics from Harvard University. He is a physicist at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and lecturer in the Astronomy Department at Harvard. His research interests include stellar atmospheres, stellar dynamics and radiative transfer. Alan P. Lightman received his A.B. degree in physics from Princeton University and his Ph.D. in theoretical physics from the California Institute of Technology. He was a research fellow at Cornell and then an Assistant Professor of Astronomy at Harvard University from 1976-1979. He is presently at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. His research includes work in general relativity, the astrophysics of black holes, radiation mechanisms, and stellar dynamics. He is also a coauthor of Problem Book in Relativity and Gravitation (1975).

An Almost Perfect Book for a Course on Astrophysics

One of the peculiarities of Astrophysics is that, as a
subject, is difficult to teach. It requires to go deep into
the physics of the objects under study (which span the whole
Universe) but alto to keep a broad view (the so called "Big
Picture") since most of the objects and their histories
cannot be understood if they are isolated from the others.
One of the problems a teacher faces is, hence, how to strike a
balance between these two disparate goals within the limited
time of one or two academic terms.
Rybicki and Lightman success with this book is to take the
physics of astrophysical problems involving radiation from
the general approaches of the physics books to the particular
conditions of most of the cases that astronomy cares about
without leaving rigorousity along the way. With a little
abuse of language: They bring Physics a step closer to
Astronomy.
On the other hand, the area of actual applications that
astronomers use is almost neglected. For example, the
introductory chapters on Radiative Transfer and Black
Body Radiation could have served to motivate a chapter on
theoretical basis of photometry (theoretical approach to
color indices, extinction by dust or other microscopic
particles). This would have given the student a more
realistic flavor of the tools that astrophysicists use
in their everyday (every night?) work. The Problem Sets,
in addition, are claiming for a few numerical
applications to profit from the, now easily available
to students, computer power.
Every serious astrophysics teacher and student should
use this book... and think hard on how to take the
next step from Rybicki and Lightman to the Absolute
Magnitude versus Color Index diagrams.

This is THE standard text in the field of astrophysical radiation processes. Covers most processes of interest for the astrophysicist, at a depth adequate for graduate students. Well written and understandable. A must buy, despite the very high price.

About the Author
Dr. Henry Sinnreich (Richardson, TX) is Chief Technology Officer at Pulver.com, a leading media company for VoIP and Internet communication services. Dr. Sinnreich has held engineering and executive positions at MCI where he was an MCI fellow and has been involved in Internet and multimedia services for more than 12 years, including the development of the flagship MCI Advantage service based on SIP. Henry Sinnreich is also a contributor to IETF standards for Internet communications in such areas as SIP telephony devices and using RTP extensions for voice quality monitoring. He was awarded the title Pioneer for VoIP in 2000 at the VON Europe conference. Henry Sinnreich has been a cofounder and board member of the International SIP Forum based in Stockholm. He is a frequent speaker and is known as the leading evangelist, worldwide, for SIP based VoIP, presence, IM, multimedia, and integration of applications with communications. Dr. Sinnreich is also a guest lecturer at the Engineering School of the Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX.

Alan B. Johnston (St. Louis, MO) is a Consulting Member of Technical Staff at Avaya, Inc. He has coauthored the core Internet SIP standard RFC 3261 and four other SIP related RFCs. He is the co-chair of the IETF Centralized Conferencing Working Group and is on the board of directors of the International SIP Forum. His current areas of interest include peer-to-peer SIP and security. Dr. Johnston is a frequent speaker and lecturer on SIP and contributor to various publications, and is an adjunct professor at Washington University in St. Louis, MO.

An Outstanding Book on SIP

I'll keep it short and sweet. I am one of the authors of SIP and
of many of its related technologies that are discussed in
this book. As such, I am frequently asked by people how they
can quickly understand the benefits of SIP technology, why
it is important to them, and what it can enable. The answer is
simple - read the Sinnreich/Johnston book. The book helps you
understand how SIP, its extensions, and related technologies
all fit together, and why SIP is revolutionizing communications.
This is a fabulous piece of work, written by two recognized
leaders. I highly recommend it.

Must Read -- This book explains the "why" of SIP services

I've been involved in the development of the SIP specification for several years, and currently co-chair the Internet Working Groups overseeing its continued evolution. I'm closely involved with the application of SIP to next-generation mobile phone networks. Between standards work and speaking on SIP frequently at trade shows and conferences I've seen a lot of SIP books and tried to explain SIP to many people. Most of the books on SIP cover the dry technical details of the specification and implementations. This book, "Internet Communications Using SIP" goes into an entirely different realm.
Henry Sinnreich and Alan Johnston are two of the most knowledgeable authorities and notable figures in the SIP world. I expected a lot from them them. They've greatly exceeded my expectations, doing a surprisingly good job of explaining WHY the SIP protocol works the way it does, WHAT sort of advanced services it is making possible, and HOW service providers can use it to enrich their business offerings.
This book is an absolute "must read" for anyone in the industry, especially for people familiar with traditional telephony who are trying to design, market, or implement new telecom services of any kind. If you haven't read this book and Gonzalo Camarillo's new SIP book, don't argue with the old-timers on the SIP mailing lists -- they're likely to just tell you to "RTFB" . . . and this is one of the books they're referring to.

Disorganized and too shallow

This books presents SIP, the protocol for Session Initiation. It covers many aspects, including conferencing, security, Internet telephony, user preferences.

The book is not 400+ pages as Amazon indicates but just below 300. Why does this matter? Because, with 17 chapters, this gives an average of less than 20 pages per chapter. As you can guess, 20 pages are not sufficient to explain topics such as Internet telephony, or conferencing. Even the SIP protocol is not presented fully. Only the major messages are listed with a short description of their use.

I was also disappointed by the book organization. The SIP Overview chapter which explains how SIP works is chapter 5. All the preceeding chapters mention SIP before we even know what SIP is. This is most confusing unless you have already some SIP knowledge.

The book tries to cover too much. We get a whirlwind tour of many topics, none of them explained appropriately. The book opens many issues that remain unanswered. If you want a shallow overview of SIP, this book may meet your need. But you are likely to quickly need something more in-depth.

Good but out of date

This book is written well and explains the technology well, and is a good reference for the basic design and set-up. However, items mentioned as coming in the future are already standard. The HD TV and Home Theater technology is changing so fast it is hard to write, print and distribute a book and keep it current.

Well. This book is purely practice questions. After I finished reviewing/learning everything out of Kaplan, I used this book to get me used to the question types that you have on the DAT. So it's good for that. I have the attitude of the more pratice questions the better. There are some really annoying things about it though. First off, there's a ton of mistakes. When I read that on other reviews (people finding mistakes) I thought to myself, how could you really know? But you can. Oh, and the three practice tests on cd? It's a crock. They might as well be in the damn book. The program window looks exactly like the book, bright yellow with black stripes and is completely distracting. Even more importantly, the cd doesn't time you, you can't take a whole test, it doesn't keep track of the ones you missed, and it tells you the right answer after every single question. So in no way is it like the real test. You can only use the cd to practice questions. Also the math "tests" were way too easy. and the reading isn't accurate to the real DAT because instead of three big articles they give like 8 little readings with 7 questions each.

So basically, I found it to be helpful, but out of everything (Kaplan, Topscore), it was the least helpful.

Not comprehensive enough for a thorough review

The main issue I have with this book is that the problems in this book seem much too easy as compared to those found in other review books and in the actual DAT test. Further, if you want some good practice with Organic Chemistry, look elsewhere; this book only has a "Chemistry" section with some questions devoted to Organic Chemistry.

The only redeeming feature is the PAT section, since it provides you with more practice on various shapes for TFE and patterns for Folding.

Overall, I feel this book can only at best serve as a supplementary to more comprehensive review books. Perhaps this book can be used to pinpoint basic ideas in Biology, Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry that you are weak in, but do not expect the book to be challenging.

Some good practice tests, but dissapointing accuracy

After studying for the DAT for a few months, I finally picked up the Cliff's book. It has some good things, but suffers from too many problems for me to really recommend it.

The Good:

The book comes with three practice tests, two in the book, and one more on its CD-ROM. Since more practice is better, this system exceeds the Kaplan DAT book's 2 tests. Also, many of the science questions have detailed explanations of the answers, something that is quite helpful when you get a question wrong. The test questions are less difficult than the KAPLAN or TopScore practice tests, and more in-line with the level of difficulty on the actual DAT. A good confidence booster, though I also appreciate the more difficult questions.

The Bad:

The format of the book's actual text is definitely just a review of the science topics in the DAT. If you needed to learn some topics instead of reviewing them, this book would be a disappointment.

The single biggest problem with this book is the inaccuracies in its practice tests. Some answers are just plain wrong, some questions have one answer duplicated in the possible answers, and some questions give the wrong answer, but then explain the right answer in the explanation section. When I went through the practice science tests I found 6 mistakes, and I'm by no means an expert. Granted, looking up the mistakes to confirm that they were mistakes cemented the concepts in my brain, but they could be quite misleading.

The Bottom Line:

If the publisher released a subsequent edition that fixed the books inaccuracies, it would be an excellent resource to get more practice before the actual DAT. However, even with those inaccuracies fixed, its review section would not be as effective as the Kaplan DAT book. In addition, it's MSRP seems a bit high for a thin, flimsy book.

Interesting anecdotes.

This book is, just as the title describes, about stories. Don't buy this book thinking it'll run you through the process of hacking or cracking anything, but it's a must have for beginner infosec/compsec students as it teaches you in a different way than most expect, and is fun to read. Not to mention, you know, he's M I T N I C K

Interesting Glimps into the Shadow of Computer Security

Few people in the world of computer attacking and defense are surrounded by so many stories and mystique as is Kevin Mitnick. His first book "The Art of Deception" gave eye opening warnings of security penetration through social engineering, one of Mitnick's specialties. Because he cannot write about his own hacking exploits, he has gathered stories of other attackers and their exploits. Of course, as the author admits, it's almost impossible to verify the truth of these stories, since they are all involving people who are either hidden, or involve incidents difficult to corroborate. Still, even if many of the stories are fiction or heavily fictionalized, there are lessons to be drawn in terms of security from each. Some of the stories are stronger than others (geeks exploiting technology to cheat casinos is the stuff of movies, stories of terrorists attempting to manipulate teenagers seem less strong and more of an attempt to give the stories contemporary urgency). After each story, Mitnick does some analysis and gives his thoughts on ways to counter these kinds of attacks. Some of these countermeasures should be obvious, but the fact that these stories take place, shows that they are far from obvious. Sometimes Mitnick hammers on the same countermeasures again and again which, while probably true, sometimes make the breadth of the stories seem less broad.

The information contained in the book still carries value, and is an accessible way to introduce people to the necessity of caution and security in all aspects of modern life. The caution is needed for everyone, from the consumer listening to almost daily loss of personal information to the manager charged with securing the company physically and technologically. At worst, you will walk away from this book hopefully thinking a bit more about security, if not starting to feel paranoid. And as technology works its way into every aspect of our lives, caution is needed now more than ever, which is where Mitnick delivers the goods in cautionary tales.

More Scams Please

The Art of Intrusion starts off with a great story of some computer geeks who come up with a new way to scam the Las Vegas casinos by hacking slot machines. I can't resist a good con book or movie. The Great Escape, Ocean's Eleven, The Thomas Crown Affair, I love them all.

I had been hoping for a collection of cons and clever schemes like those in Catch Me If You Can, Topkapi, American Roulette. Instead, The Art of Intrusion has one good con, a few stories of hacking vending machines and websites, and a lot of "advice" for people tasked with computer security. As in The Art of Deception, Kevin Mitnick's previous book with William Simon, the advice consists mostly of common sense tips such as don't give your password to the guy on the phone who says he's the repairman.

This may be a good book for people who are responsible for computer security where they work. There is plenty of technical advice about back door attacks and firewalls, and scads of code for those who those who want the details. But Mitnick emphasizes social engineering as a greater risk to your computer security and I believe him. It's a lot easier to just ask someone for the password or for access to the system than it is to invade from the outside. And most people don't expect a hacker to be the friendly voice on the phone who says he's Don from the home office and chats you up before casually asking for the entry code.

Anyway, if you are looking for a good book about cons, I'd recommend The Eudamonic Pie by Thomas Bass, American Roulette by Richard Marcus, or Catch Me If You Can by Frank Abnagale.
