About the Author
Donald N. Lombardi is associate academic director of Seton Hall University and the principal partner of CHR/InterVista, a health care management consulting firm in Mt. Arlington, New Jersey.

Dr. John R. Schermerhorn, Jr. is the Charles G. O'Bleness Professor of Management in the College of Business at Ohio University, and formerly served as Director of the Ohio University Center for Southeast Asian Studies. He earned a Ph. D. in organizational behavior from Northwestern University and an M.B.A. (with distinction) in management and international business from New York University. Dr. Schermerhorn previously taught at Tulane University, The University of Vermont, and Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, where he served as Head of the Department of Management and Associate Dean of the College of Business Administration.

A specialist in general management, organizational change and interorganizational cooperation, his clients have included Corning Glass Works, Pepsico, Inc., American Bankers Association, New England Hospital Assembly, Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation, Petroleous de Venezuela, and the Vietnam Training Center for Radio and Television, among other organizations.

This book was exactly the same as the school was trying to sell me for $250! I ordered it at the last minute and still received it well before the date it was scheduled to arrive. I will always check before I buy anything from the school bookstore again.

About the Author
Theodore G. Faticoni, PhD, is Professor in the Dept. of Mathematics at Fordham University.  He received his PhD in Mathematics from the Univ. of Connecticut in 1981.  His professional experience includes 30 research papers in peer reviewed journals and 30 lectures on his research to his colleagues.

Interesting introduction to sets, and infinity, with only minor flaws

An excellent book with a slightly misleading title. A better title might be "Sets and Proofs and their Applications to Infinity".

The book is well organized and well written, although the author's assumptions concerning his target audience appear slightly inappropriate. The back cover recommends the book as recreational reading for the mathematically inquisitive. The material presented is certainly accessible to a highly motivated reader. However, the level of mathematical maturity needed to maintain the interest and understanding of the reader appears more realistically targeted for an audience at the college level or the equivalent self-educated reader.

This concise presentation is dense in mathematical symbols. Fortunately for the reader, the examples and proofs give all the appropriate steps so that there are rarely any mathematical gaps to close. The book introduces some substantial mathematical concepts and ways of thinking. This is one of those math books that holds and sustains your interest throughout.

There are some slight flaws, such as editing errors, as early as the preface's first paragraph. In a few instances there are factual errors in the mathematics, e.g., on page 21 the author asks the reader to identify the 11 missing sets, when there are actually 13 missing sets. The most unfortunate gap, in light of the intended audience, is the author's request that the reader provide their own proofs for a number of problems, for which Dr. Faticoni fails to provide solutions.

This book should be interesting to the mathematically mature reader, and help the motivated budding mathematician gain insights to prepare them for more advanced material.

Overall, in spite of some minor flaws, this is an interesting and substantive book by a master teacher. It is one I enjoyed and, except for its price which seems somewhat inappropriate considering its size and intended audience, one I can recommend.

Great Book, High Price

First of all the price for this book is way to high, but really this is my only major objection. I have seen allot of books on set theory. As an introduction that aims to give insight into how set theory is handled, and exactly what it does, this book is top notch.

I also found typos in the book. For someone that does not know enough to sort the typos from author intentions this can be a real pain. Of course the way around this is to have at least one other book on set theory around. If something looks odd, then check the other text.

ENCOUNTERING INFINITY

For anyone with a basic knowledge of high school algebra this book will serve as an excellent introduction to infinite sets, infinite cardinals, and infinite ordinals. After exploring basic set theory and functions, the author carefully leads the reader through infinite sets, infinite cardinals, and well ordered sets to include a nice discussion of the Continuum Hypothesis with a brief overview of Cohen's work. The author concludes his work with chapters on inductions and numbers including a sampling of number theory, prime numbers with an overview of the Riemann Hypothesis, and, finally, a chapter on logic and meta-mathematics. All in all, this book is an excellent primer on Cantor's theory of Transfinite Numbers with some additional topics to whet the reader's appetite. My only complaints are several typos and the high price of the book. That being said, the printing layout of the book is excellent and reading is easy on the eyes. I would advise the interested reader to obtain a used copy for 20-30 dollars. The book would make an excellent text for an advanced high school class or possibly a freshmen seminar at the university level.

A real advance in inorganic chemistry!

The first editions of this book made a real revolution in inorganic chemistry. The approach in this book has not realy changed during the years but I still think it is a must-have book. It is easy to read with a lot of data, structures and tables. In my oppinion it should be combined with Greenwood's "Chemistry of the elements" and Douglas' et al. "Concepts and models of inorganic chemistry".

W. Clay Richardson is a software consultant concentrating on agile Java Solutions for highly specialized business processes. He has fielded many Java solutions, serving in roles including senior architect, development lead, and program manager. He is a co-author of More Java Pitfalls and Professional Portal Development with Open Source Tools (Wiley), and Professional Java, JDK 5 Edition. As an adjunct professor of computer science for Virginia Tech, Richardson teaches graduate-level coursework in object-oriented development with Java. He holds degrees from Virginia Tech and the Virginia Military Institute.

Donald Avondolio currently serves in a lead position as an architect / developer on an enterprise development project. In his spare time, Donald loves fly-fishing, watching baseball and lacrosse running triathlons (not very well), and sitting around his house complaining about things.

Scot Schrager has consulted extensively in the domains of pharmaceuticals, supply chain management, and the national security market. He has led and participated in various project teams using Java and Object Oriented Analysis & Design techniques. Most recently, Schrager has been focused on distributed application architecture using J2EE technology.

Can't tell who this book is really for

Professional Java attempts to do something I don't think any one book can do well, which is to say something useful on just about every topic. This book's sections include: important additions/changes to JDK 5; a whirlwind tour of project methodologies; design patterns; build tools; persistence tools; UIs; web applications; JNI; EJB 3; SOA; security; and packaging and deployment. The book wants to be a "one-stop shop," and that's fine. After reading through most of the sections and skimming some, however, I'm not sure what the profile of the target shopper might be.

The topic coverage varies wildly from section to section, in the writing style (and quality) and in the effectiveness of sample code to illustrates a point. Too often the descriptions are both verbose and phrased in the passive voice. Some code samples seem like proof-of-concept sketches of a feature or library facility, rather than a compelling example of its use. Still other samples seem full of boilerplate code that speeds up the page-turning but isn't illuminating. And sometimes the text changes its diction strangely; the style changes from a general description to a "follow-along" activity without warning. Some sentences sound as if the author left them in as a reminder to complete a task.

The result is a thick book that, for me, is sometimes tedious or exhausting to read. I think it would have been helpful to give author credit by chapter, if only to know the presentation might change significantly. Also, a concerted effort at paring things down, and keeping the diction clear and active, would help make it more readable and something worth referencing.

As mentioned, the topic coverage is quite broad. This book might come in handy to someone who just needs many topics in one book. So long as you don't need your one reference also for getting started, this book could be a useful collection.

Learning Java from scratch isn't very difficult, but if you want to know all the good practices it can take quite a big amount of time and effort. The book Professional Java JDK 6 Edition" is here to help us out.
This book is very interesting and relates to quite a few issues. The first thing I found interesting were the differences between JDK 1.5 and JDK 1.6. Another subject is the design of web applications in two architecture models. This book also describes the basics of Enterprise Java Beans. Furthermore the reader will enter the world of many different, but very useful tools such as: Maven, TestNG or JMeter. Another very good chapter is about integrating Java and C++ using JNI (Java Native Interface). Everybody will find something interesting in this book. The number of problems this book is about is really impressive. But there is one thing missing - the J2ME technology.
All the texts in the book are described very clearly and they have very good examples. These examples are very helpful and allow you understand the meaning of the book quicker. However since the book is about many aspects of Java an doesn't concentrate only on one subject, some of the issues were described a bit to briefly. Sometimes when you read this book you get a feeling that there is something that this chapter lacks. When this happens unfortunately you have to find another book which is more specialized than this book.
At the end of the review you ask yourself one question - for who was this book written? The answer is frankly quite simple. For those people, who have some experience in Java and know the basic and now would like to continue their studies on Java, but don't know where to start their journey. Another group of readers that will the book useful are professional that would like to have some kind of quick reference guide. The book is really great and worth having but as for me it's a nice-to-have, but not a must-have. Still we have to remember that though this book is about different aspects of Java it won't replace a collection of more specialized books. But if had to give this book a grade it would be a B+, because of the drawbacks I mentioned above. However I think everyone should read this book - it's worth it!

This book is useful for old school java programmers who have gotten a bit out of touch with the latest and greatest. It covers a number of useful topics and then again not some, for example why Hibernate was added is a riddle, frameworks should not be part of this.

A closer focus on POJO would have benefited this book a bit more. A times it goes down to a lot of detail and then zooms back up and skips over stuff.

All in all, lots of great stuff here to help a java programmer, but most topics will need more research to be full grasped.

A rare kind of systems oriented reference

This is one of those rare books that teaches thermal engineering from a systems point of view. This is a valuable skill to have these days since you need to be a jack of all trades sometimes. If you are looking for something that tells you how to derive complex equations from first principles, this is not the book. But if you are looking for practical applications that factor in cost issues when taking design decisions, this is worth it.

I was very disappointed with this purchase. The book said it had over 300 pages but the kindle edition is just a summary of the full book.

Not clear on Amazon at ALL! At least it was only .99.. ;)

Excellent Book !

This is one of the best books around for studying Random Processes ! The author has also provided a very good introduction to Detection, Estimation and Modelling of Stochastic Processes. I found this book very useful and I'd strongly suggest this book for an introductionary level graduate course. If you want to build a strong foundation in Random Signal Theory, this book is the way to go.. Other advanced texts like Simon Haykin's "Adaptive Filter Theory" will be a lot easier to understand once you study this book thoroughly and work out the exercise problems.

An excellent book

I've read the statistical signal processing and stochastic processes books by Kay, Papoulis, Srinath and Stark & Woods, and this is by far the best book that covers both subject areas in a logical fashion. The text is very clearly written, mathematical notation is easy to follow, and example problems are very worthwhile. I'm currently a PhD student using this book to prepare for my qualification exams, and it's really helping me master the difficult subject of estimation and detection theory.

Though the book does not get much into measure spaces and some of the abstract theoretical fundamentals, it's an excellent engineering reference that's ideal for an introductory class in the subject. My only complaint is that the book is not hardcover.

Much better than Hayes

I agree with the other reviews that this is one of the best books for studying random processes, especially in the context of DSP. I used the book in a graduate level "statistical signal processing" course at the University of London and I found it extremely useful.
It covers everything from the definition of a sample space, AR and MA processes, periodograms to optimal Wiener filter theory. The examples are very clear and they accompany each of the chapters. One point to notice is that you do need to know something about Fourier transforms and also have basic familiarity with probability.

Highly recommended to anyone in the DSP field.
