Not recommended for anyone who has previous experience

If you have some experience of foreign exchange trading, this book is not for yourself. You would learn everything written here within the first six weeks of your job as a foreign exchange trader.
However, this book is great for the REAL beginners who want to learn about foreign exchange from the very beginning and for trainers or teachers who teach those who has little knowledge the foreign exchange. This book starts from explaining what bids and asks are and explains so far up to the mechanics of foreign exchange derivatives. The most remarkable feature of this book is illustrations of deal components and market segments showing how each deal components and markets are related to each other. Detail explanation on different market conventions applied to different currencies is also useful. Short questions at end of chapters are good to review what you should take away from the chapters.

The book contains a wealth of practical information however there are errors in the mathematical formulas, dates and etc. This is most frustrating from a reader point of view and dampened the confidence in the material presented. However, it is relatively a easy read for general understanding of the money and FX markets. I hope the author does a more thorough check in the future edition in order to do this book justice.

Excellent practical book for the beginners

This is a great practical book for the beginners and intermediate people in the market. When I started in the market as a business analyst, with no prior experience, it was a confused world of trading. After reading this book, things make much more sense. In addition, the book explains brief analytics on how to price and when and why certain instruments will be used for trading. It is geared towards trading. Refer to other books if you are more interested in middle/back office functionality (like settlements, P&L calc, risk management etc.)

About the Author
Svetlozar (Zari) T. Rachev completed his Ph.D. Degree in 1979 from Moscow State (Lomonosov) University, and his Doctor of Science Degree in 1986 from Steklov Mathematical Institute in Moscow. Currently he is Chair-Professor in Statistics, Econometrics and Mathematical Finance at the University of Karlsruhe in the School of Economics and Business Engineering. He is also Professor Emeritus at the University of California, Santa Barbara in the Department of Statistics and Applied Probability. He has published seven monographs, eight handbooks and special-edited volumes, and over 250 research articles. Professor Rachev is cofounder of Bravo Risk Management Group specializing in financial risk-management software. Bravo Group was recently acquired by FinAnalytica for which he currently serves as Chief-Scientist.

Stefan Mittnik studied at the Technical University Berlin, Germany, the University of Sussex, England, and at Washington University in St. Louis, where he received his doctorate degree in economics. He is now Professor of Financial Econometrics at the University of Munich, Germany, and research director at the Ifo Institute for Economic Research in Munich. Prior to joining the University of Munich he taught at SUNYStony Brook, New York, the University of Kiel, Germany, and held several visiting positions, including that of Fulbright Distinguished Chair at Washington University in St. Louis. His research focuses on financial econometrics, risk management, and portfolio optimization. In addition to purely academic interests, Professor Mittnik directs the risk management program at the Center for Financial Studies in Frankfurt, Germany, and is co-founder of the Institut für Quantitative Finanzanalyse (IQF) in Kiel, where he now chairs the scientific advisory board.

Frank J. Fabozzi is an Adjunct Professor of Finance and Becton Fellow in the School of Management at Yale University. Prior to joining the Yale faculty, he was a Visiting Professor of Finance in the Sloan School at MIT. Professor Fabozzi is a Fellow of the International Center for Finance at Yale University and on the Advisory Council for the Department of Operations Research and Financial Engineering at Princeton University. He is the editor of The Journal of Portfolio Management and an associate editor of the The Journal of Fixed Income. He earned a doctorate in economics from the City University of New York in 1972. In 2002 Professor Fabozzi was inducted into the Fixed Income Analysts Society’s Hall of Fame. He earned the designation of Chartered Financial Analyst and Certified Public Accountant. He has authored and edited numerous books in finance.

Sergio Focardi is a partner of The Intertek Group and a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Portfolio Management. He is the (co-) author of numerous articles and books on financial modeling and risk management, including the CFA Institute’s recent monograph Trends in Quantitative Finance (co-authors Fabozzi and Kolm) and the award-winning books Financial Modeling of the Equity Market (co-authors Fabozzi and Kolm, Wiley) and The Mathematics of Financial Modeling and Investment Management (co-author Fabozzi, Wiley). Mr. Focardi has implemented long-short portfolio construction applications based on dynamic factor analysis and conducts research in the econometrics of large equity portfolios and the modeling of regime changes. He holds a degree in Electronic Engineering from the University of Genoa and a postgraduate degree in Communications from the Galileo Ferraris Electrotechnical Institute (Turin).

Teo Jasic earned his doctorate (Dr.rer.pol.) in economics from the University of Karlsruhe in 2006. He also holds an MSc degree from the National University of Singapore and a Dipl.-Ing. degree from the University of Zagreb. Currently, he is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Chair ofStatistics, Econometrics and Mathematical Finance at the University of Karlsruhe in the School of Economics and Business Engineering. Why do people lie, and how can lies be detected? There is now a substantial psychological literature relating to these fundamental questions, and this book reviews the relevant knowledge in detail, before focusing on guidelines for best practice in detecting deception. Psychological research is now available on individual differences in lying behaviour (gender differences, age differences and personality). There is also interesting research evidence of the ways in which deception is reflected both in real objective non-verbal behaviour and also in the perceived non-verbal cues which can help or mislead the observer in detecting deception. Although the book does include a major survey of the physiological aspects of deception and the polygraph as a method of detection, it also includes a thorough review of current knowledge of content analysis and validity assessment of speech and written statements. The book ends by discussing how professionals can improve lie detection by focusing on key aspects of the behaviour of the liar and by awareness and control of their own behaviour.

A rip off

As a psychologist, I purchased this book expecting a thorough presentation of the topic and for the price of $153.98, I expected a text book. Instead I received a 225 page paper back which barely touches on the topics listed in the table of contents.

I purchased at the same time, Paul Ekman's Telling Lies, Clues to Deceipt in the Marketplace, Politics, and Marriage. This book contained 385 pages and extensively delves into each topic. Not only is it better written, but the cost of this book was $10.49. To pay 14.7 times the price of this book for the Aldert Virj book was a rip-off. The seller still has not replied to my request to return this book.

Excellent survey of psychological literature on deception

This is an extraordinary book, a well-written and clear survey of the psychological literature on deception written by one of the leaders in the field. Extremely thorough, and although sophisticated enough for professionals it is nevertheless useful for students and non-psychologists. As a lawyer and academic who writes on psychology and the law, I found it enormously helpful in preparing an article on the admissibility of expert testimony on lie-detection techniques. Having written on the subject before, and being more adept at legal rather than psychological research, I was thrilled to find such a clear and thorough collection of sources and commentary on the myriad social science research on lie-detection, and have already used the book's index to locate and look up numerous studies with which I was previously unfamiliar.

Detecting Lies & Deceipt

I found this book to the most informative and useful reference of all those I have read regarding the subject and techniques relating to detecting deception by means of statement analysis in it's various forms. Easy to read. Easy to understand. It will remain a guide to forensic investigators, polygraphists and the like for many years to come.
