About the Author
Ray Whittington, PhD, CPA, CMA, CIA, is the Dean of the College of Commerce at DePaul University. Prior to joining the faculty at DePaul, Professor Whittington was the Director of Accountancy at San Diego State University. From 1989 through 1991, he was the Director of Auditing Research for the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), and he previously was on the audit staff of KPMG. He was a member of the Auditing Standards Board of the AICPA and has previously served as a member of the Accounting and Review Services Committee and the Board of Regents of the Institute of International Auditors. Professor Whittington has published numerous textbooks, articles, monographs, and continuing education courses.

Lynford Graham, CPA, PhD, CFE is a Certified Public Accountant with more than 25 years of public accounting experience in audit practice and national policy development groups. He was a Partner and the Director of Audit Policy for BDO Seidman, LLP, and was a National Accounting & SEC Consulting Partner for Coopers & Lybrand, responsible for the technical issues research function and database, auditing research, audit automation and audit sampling techniques. Prior to joining BDO Seidman LLP, Dr. Graham was an Associate Professor of Accounting and Information Systems and a Graduate Faculty Fellow at Rutgers University in Newark, New Jersey, where he taught primarily financial accounting courses. Dr. Graham is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and a recent past member of the AICPA Auditing Standards Board. He is a Certified Fraud Examiner and a member of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. Throughout his career he has maintained an active profile in the academic as well as the business community. In 2002 he received the Distinguished Service Award of the Auditing Section of the AAA. His numerous academic and business publications span a variety of topical areas including information systems, internal controls, expert systems, audit risk, audit planning, fraud, sampling, analytical procedures, audit judgment, and international accounting and auditing. Dr. Graham holds an MBA in Industrial Management and PhD in Business and Applied Economics from the University of Pennsylvania (Wharton School).

This workbook connects a student properly with the Professional Baking textbook. If you're studying the textbook alone, it is a ton of information that might be difficult to absorb as a first year culinary student. It's worth it, if you're serious about baking.

If you aspire to be a professional amateur baker, this book is a great resource. Learning how the various ingredients interact with each other is empowering for someone who wishes to make her own recipes. I haven't done so yet... but I feel like I have all the tools needed to do so!

"Backstage With Julia" is packed with endearing anecdotes, like the time Julia got herself and friends into La Grenouille not by dropping her own name but by calling her hairdresser, whose brother was a dishwasher there; how Julia would serve Pepperidge Farm Goldfish for hors d'oeuvres; and Julia on low-fat food: "The only time to eat diet food is while you’re waiting for the steak to cook." Barr's voice is breathless. Her one true revelation? Julia didn’t love pasta. But we'd trade a chirpy tale or two for just some good plain writing. (New York Times Book Review, August 26th, 2007)

Barr (We Called it Macaroni) here offers a lovingly written memoir of her years working with and learning from Julia Child. In 1980, Nancy Verde Barr was drafted to help organize a Julia Child cooking demonstration in Providence, Rhode Island. Barr immediately hit it off with Julia, setting the stage for a relationship that would last twenty-four years—and transform Barr's personal and professional life forever. Now, in this engaging memoir, Barr takes a fond look back at her years with Julia.

At the time Barr joined Julia's team, Julia had long been a celebrity. But as Barr soon realized, Julia didn't act like a celebrity. Poignant, powerful and lyrical

Nancy Barr writes beautifully. This sweet-spirited account of her decades with Julia Child provides an insightful, well-integrated, honest, clear lens with which to get one more glimpse of the beloved Julia who inspired and taught so many of us, so well, for so long. Backstage with Julia is a joy to read. Then I headed to the kitchen and started pulling out copper pans, a chickeny chicken, herbs and quantities of butter. Thank you, Ms. Barr!

Easy read, feel good book

Ages ago I attended the cooking demonstration that Julia Child gave at the Rhode Island School of Design mentioned in this book, the event that was the beginning of the author's relationship with Julia. In a fit of nostalgia I was recently looking for the recipes from the program book that I lost along the way. I "accidentally" bought this book because it appeared it might have them documented since they are mentioned under "Recipes" in the index. Unfortunately, there are only a couple of recipes in the book and these were not among them. The index is misleading that regard. But the book was a light, entertaining read anyway. It charmingly portrays Julia as I would like to remember from seeing her on TV and at this one memorable live encounter: a warm, fun loving person who just loved to cook and wanted everyone else to fearlessly share her passion. If you want a gritty, in-depth expose of Julia's life, this isn't it. But if you remember Julia fondly this will leave you feeling good.

What a surprise!

The book caught my eye in the library, and I read it in a couple of sittings over a weekend (a speed I rarely attain). Though the auther clearly adored Julia, I felt it was nevertheless a transparent view. I found the humor in particular delightful: like the time they became lost together on an auto trip following Julia's road map skills (from a 40 year old map), and, when confronted with a street that ended abruptly with a large rock outcropping Julia exclaims "meteors!"

A great read on a relationship between genius and her clear headed "straight man."

About the Author
Phillip Good, Ph.D., a graduate of UC Berkeley's statistics program, is the author of sixteen published books. He has 23 years of experience in the pharmaceutical and medical device industries, first with Upjohn, and then as an independent consultant. He has taught anatomy and biology, and has also served as Calloway Professor of Computer Science at the University of Georgia at Fort Valley. Dr. Good has lectured extensively throughout the world, including an appointment as traveling lecturer for the American Statistical Association.

Not good quality. But

This book was purchased new. However, the print is very light as if it were a photo copy. Not good quality. But, based on the other reviews, this is a common issue so I will keep the book instead of returning it for a better copy.

Typo or bad history? ... you decide

I'm required to take a test in New York State called the Content Specialty Test (CST) in Social Studies, which is very similar the Praxus exam. Therefore, I've been preparing for it by using this guide. So far, in taking the practice tests within I've come across some very odd questions, but this particular one below makes me doubt the validity of the entire book.

55. One historical lesson from the McCarthy era is the realization that

A. loyalty oaths prevent spying

B. communism is influential in prosperous times.

C. communist agents had infiltrated all levels of the U.S. government

D. public fear of traitors can lead to intolerance and discrimination.

Okay, A and B are obviously wrong, which leaves C and D. Personally, I chose "D" as the correct answer. Yet, the guide lists "C" as the correct answer. Now, I know that recent research has uncovered evidence that our government did indeed have communist spies hiding in various agencies during that era, but I would think that the LESSON of the McCarthy era would be more in line with answer D.

Then, this is the explanation provided for answer 55 in the guide....

55. C. Think about the definiton of McCarthyism, the use of unsubstantiated accusations to discredit people. So, you're looking for the answer that best relates to this definition.

The explanation for "C" as the correct answer contradicts itself.

I've forwarded this question and others like it from the guide to a highly respected history professor at Lehman College-CUNY in NYC. He and his wife (also an educator) have advised me to steer clear of this guide, as they find it filled with typographical errors which may negatively influence my test results.

praxis 2: social studies content knowledge test

For my personal needs, this book was perfect. I am an English teacher & have only had 12 hours of undergraduate history courses. I have always been interested in history, so I decided to take the Praxis 2 in Social Studies. This book offers a basic overview of every section that will be on the test. There is no in-depth information here, but, then again, the Praxis 2 is not exactly an in-depth assessment. It will only test a very rudimentary knowledge of your content area.

It seems that most of the negative reviews are from history majors who felt this book was too basic. This book probably is too basic for a history major & would likely be a waste of money. If you are not a history major or it has been awhile since you have been in school, I would highly recommend this book. Otherwise, you could probably pass the test without even studying, as I did with the Praxis 2 in English.

About the Author
Anna S. Chernobai, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Finance at the M. J. Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University. The focus of her research is operational risk management.

Svetlozar T. Rachev, PhD, Dr Sci, is Chair-Professor at the University of Karlsruhe, Germany, in the School of Economics and Business Engineering, Professor Emeritus at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and Chief-Scientist of FinAnalytica.

Frank J. Fabozzi, PhD, CFA, is Professor in the Practice of Finance at Yale University's School of Management and the Editor of the Journal of Portfolio Management.

The quantitative side of operational risk

Chernobai provides a useful overview of the aspect you should be familiar with when modeling OR capital under the advanced measurement approach. Aspects covered are a brief introduction to the OR related parts from the Basel II capital accord, technical discussions on fitting standard statistical distributions to empirical loss frequency and severity distributions, using these to obtain the loss distribution per business line/event type grouping, and methods to aggregate these loss distributions. These technical parts are covered in sufficient detail with ample references to recent published work including many of the authors' own publications.

However the book has some shortcomings possibly due to the academic slant thereof. It ignores the qualitative component to OR modeling which is increasingly being recognized as important to reduce the degree of "leap of faith" modeling when modeling with sparse OR extreme events. Also excluded is the use of external data and the related data scaling methods. It also ignores the quantification of the risk control environment and use thereof in capital modeling through hypothetical scenario data, and as a tool to allocate capital to business units below the level at which you modeled. These topics are all related to OR modelling and should be in scope given the book's title.

Overall, taking into account the fledgling status of OR capital modelling, if you are involved with maintaining, enhancing or developing analytics to produce OR capital you should benefit greatly from this book.

Great Introduction to Operational Risk

Great book as an introduction to operational risk modelling under Basel II. There is a single introductory chapter on operational risk management, which makes the book a little to focused on modelling techniques.

New techniques have been developed ever since, but it is still a great introduction for those who are not interested in a deep understanding.

Frank J. Fabozzi does not need an introduction to the students of Finance. He has great contributions to the literature of finance in the fields of Money Market, Capital market, and issues relating to governing the finance within a financial instituion.

The field of operational risk has gained great importance in finance since the last decade. Keeping in view the shift in world focus over the analytical issue in finance with an enhanced focus on executing the financial transaction at pace with improved economic interest in the recent depression era, a new phenomenon of "Controlling the Pace of Finance" is emerging with greater importance on controlling the phenomenon through enhanced Operational Risk controls..!

Being a topic in its adolescence Dr. Fabozzi and his co-authors has given valid explanations for the development of this issue and its role in the recent efforts to control the activities of Financial Institutions with good references from the Basel II Capital Accord and concise references from the existing literature of finance concerning the issue.

The book is of great use for the practitioners of finance who are changing their focus towards operational risk, and also for the students who are beginning their advanced studies in the strange present scenario of world "Micro Financial Economics"...!

I really congratulate all readers who will benefit from the Book. The authors really deserve a round of applause!
