About the Author
JJ and Peter Isler have been sailing for most of their lives. JJ grew up around boats in San Diego, California, learning to sail in a little 7-foot dinghy called a Sabot. Peter started out loving powerboats and fishing (boys can be so strange!), but took up sailing after his family moved to Connecticut when he was 13 years old.
The Islers are well known throughout the world of sailing as top competitors and teachers. They both have taught sailing to people of all ages and experiences. Peter played an important, early role in developing US Sailing’s educational program. He also coached at the Olympic level and helped found the American Sailing Association, which accredits sailing schools and certifies sailors and instructors.
Peter has twice won the America’s Cup, serving as navigator aboard Stars & Stripes with Dennis Conner in 1987 and 1988. An accomplished small-boat sailor, Peter was Intercollegiate Sailor of the Year while at Yale University. He was the top-ranked U.S. sailor on the professional match-racing circuit for five years and has won many of the world’s major ocean races, including the Bermuda Race and the Transpac (where he navigated Morning Glory to an elapsed time record in 2005).
Peter has also been very active in the media. In the 1990s, he shifted his America’s Cup energies to television, where he was a featured analyst in ESPN’s Emmy Award–winning Cup coverage in 1992 and 1995. More recently, he covered sailing for the Outdoor Life Network (OLN), including its coverage of the 2003 America’s Cup. He is the author of several books on the sport and is presently Editor at Large of Sailing World magazine. In his spare time, Peter enjoys playing guitar and keyboard with his band, The Water Brothers.
JJ is the only American female (so far) to have won two Olympic medals in sailing, and she is the first female inductee in the Sailing World Hall of Fame. With crew member Pamela Healy, JJ won the Bronze Medal in the Women’s 470 class in the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. In the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia, she and crew member Pease Glaser won the Silver. JJ is a four-time Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year (in 1986, 1991, 1997, and 2000) and has won three World Championships and numerous national titles. She was the first female to compete in a number of events on the international matchracing circuit. And in 1995 she was the tactician and starting helmsman for the America3 Women’s America’s Cup team. She graduated from Yale University where she was captain of the sailing team and a collegiate All-American.

About the Author
Dr. John Charnes, PhD, MBA, is Professor, Scupin Faculty Fellow, and former director of the finance, economics, and decision sciences area in the University of Kansas School of Business. His specialty is the application of computer simulation and statistical methods for identifying and solving business problems, and his most current research involves using simulation for option pricing and hedging with derivatives to comply with Financial Accounting Standard (FAS) 133. Charnes has also performed research, consulting, and executive education for more than fifty corporations and other organizations.

goes beyond deterministic assumptions

The book is all about simulations. In financial modelling, as opposed to engineering or science. Readers from the latter 2 fields who have coded simulations will find much in common. The specific equations in the text for finance are largely different from what you've met before. But the basic treatment is essentially the same.

Typically, the text will describe some financial equation. The Crystal Ball program lets you easily generate random data as input to simulations, which it then runs.

Despite Excel in the book's title, the book is mostly about using Crystal Ball. Charnes shows how you can go well beyond a simple deterministic treatment of an income statement or balance sheet. Typically, most companies just use the deterministic approach. The danger is that this approach relies on certain assumptions. Using Crystal Ball and the book, you can test the effect of relaxing these assumptions on the balance sheet. A more robust approach to financial planning.

About the Author
About the authors EARL W. McDANIEL is Regents' Professor Emeritus of Physics at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he has taught and conducted research since 1954. He has held a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Fulbright Senior Research Scholarship. He has served as a consultant to the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the U.S. Army Missile Command, United Technologies, and other organizations. Dr. McDaniel is the author or coauthor of six books on atomic collisions and gaseous electronics, and the coeditor of nine other books dealing with these subjects. J. B. A. MITCHELL is Professor of Physics and Director of the Center for Chemical Physics at the University of Western Ontario. His research interests include the study of electron-ion recombination using the merged beam technique and of the development of methods for smoke reduction in large-scale fires. Dr. Mitchell is the coeditor of Dissociative Recombination: Theory, Experiment and Applications, Dissociative Recombination: Theory, Experiment and Applications II and is the cochairman of the XIXth ICPEAC Conference in Whistler, Canada, in 1995. He received his PhD in physics from Queen's University, Belfast, in 1975. M. EUGENE RUDD is Professor of Physics at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where he has been since 1965. He received the Burlington-Northern Distinguished Teacher-Scholar Award at the University of Nebraska in 1991 and an Honorary Doctor of Science Degree from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, in 1992. In 1980 he was the Chairman of the American Physical Society's Division of Electron and Atomic Physics and he is currently the Chairman of the Report Committee on Secondary Electron Spectra for the International Commission on Radiation Units and Measurements. He is the author of Science on the Great Plains: The History of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He received his PhD in physics from the University of Nebraska in 1962.

What is nanotechnology? What does it do, and why is it expected to have a significant impact on our lives? These seemingly simple questions do not have easy, direct answers. There are so many aspects to nanotechnology that the uninitiated often find it challenging to begin to understand and appreciate it. Introduction to Nanoscience and Nanotechnology explains the basics in clear language, even to those who do not have a scientific background. It reveals the present state of the art and latest applications in nanotechnology, makes estimates of where the technology is headed, and predicts what will be possible in the future.

The book begins by addressing how small the nanometer length scale is in comparison to macroscopic objects and why it is special. From a discussion of naturally occurring nanoparticles and nanoparticles composed of carbon, the book then presents the tools of nanotechnology that can build, image, and manipulate nanostructures to build materials and devices (such as MEMS devices and scanning probe technologies), as well as one of the most exciting aspects of the field—combining Bottom-up and Top-down approaches so that individual nanostructures can be probed.

About the Author
CHRIS BINNS, PhD, is Professor of Nanoscience in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Leicester, United Kingdom. He spent two years working at Synchrotron Radiation Sources (SSRL, Stanford and NSLS, Brookhaven) in the USA. Professor Binns then obtained a permanent academic post at the University of Leicester and continued synchrotron radiation experiments. In the last decade his research has focused on magnetic nanoparticles, and at present is moving into the new areas of biomedical applications of nanoparticles and in Casimir force measurements using scanning probe microscopes.

Only buy this book if you have intermediate understanding toward Nano-tech

I've had this book for 2 months now and I like this book because it's about nano-tech and well described of how atoms perform at the nano level. However, I also don't like this book because the author writes in a strong scientific vocabulary. After all this book is suppose to be a "Introduction" not a advance course in nano-tech. I'm a entrepreneur in this industry and new so if you're getting started in this nano-tech industry i would recommend you just learn from Youtube.

and even though this book is an introductory.
-the title of this book should be titled "Advanced"
instead of "Introduction"

diagrams on every page.
-small compact size. This is not a huge thick
college text book.
-affordable/reasonable price

This book has the quality be a very useful to introduction of nanoscience in the case of undergraduate students. The principal themes have introduced in this book in very intuitive and formal (some case).
