Option Pricing for the 21st Century

The Volatility Surface is an-ultra modern account of derivatives pricing and hedging. Indeed of the fifty-two bibliographical references a mere twenty were written before 1999. The book makes the case for option pricing models which incorporate randomness into stock price volatility (stochastic volatility) and jumps into stock price movements. By themselves these are not new models, but a coherent understanding of their relationship to the dynamics of the volatility surface and to derivatives valuation is new, and Gatheral does an admirable job of presenting a great deal of the most modern work in this area - including some of his own - in one place.

The topic is necessarily mathematical in nature and Gatheral spares the reader nothing of the full-on mathematical treatment; but he nevertheless manages to distill the essence of the most important mathematics into easily accessible, intuitive explanations that supplement the readers understanding. Thus this book should have broad appeal to practitioners of all levels, especially traders and those familiar with the basics of derivatives valuation. Gatheral succeeds in this vein so well, I believe, because he is a first-rate quant and a a long-time senior quant at Merril Lynch.

The book gives an excellent treatment of the relationship between stock price dynamics which actually explain option prices observed in the market and the necessity of studying the volatility surface to have a complete understanding of derivatives valuation. He does a great job of justifying the key models he reviews and then studies the implications for derivatives valuation.

As an expert practitioner, his choices reflect what is really out there in the market, so readers should pay attention. As a first rate quant, his mathematics and his grasp of the literature on option pricing will expose readers to the best of the best.

Of particular note is his last chapter on volatility instruments, in particular variance swaps, volatility swaps and options on volatility. This is an important market that was just getting started in the late 1990s but has burgeoned into one of the most active and important markets in equity derivatives. This chapter is a must for anyone interested in understanding the subtelties involved in understanding variance swap and volatility swap valuation, and is alone worth the cover price.

Nice Review of Stochastic Vol Literature

The academic literature on stochastic volatility models is vast and often difficult to understand or at least to gain a coherent view of the field from. This book provides a succinct introduction. It is well written without over simplifying issues.

Things are looked at from the view of a practitioner rather than an academic. Proofs are generally not formal and are designed to stress financial insight over rigour. But it is important to state that "practitioner" means quant rather than trader, and that this is not a piece of light reading!

I was pleased to see sections on asymptotic solutions, volatility derivatives and an introduction to credit but was a little disappointed by the brevity of the bibliography.

Applying models to the real world

The book is a great guide to understanding the different models used on Wall Street to capture the intricacies of modeling and pricing derivatives. The books focus of using models as a tool and NOT a solution is a great reminder to both traders and salespeople.

This summarized when the author describes the pricing of a digital cliquet.

"Those sellers using local Vol models will certainly value a digital cliquet at a lower price than sellers using stochastic volatility. Perversely then, those sellers using an inadequate model will almost certainly win the deal and end up short a portfolio of misvalued forward-starting digital options. OR even worse, a dealer could have an appropriate valuation approach but be pushed internally by the salespeople to match (mistaken) competitors' lower prices."

This book greatly improved my knowledge of North American glaciation and how glaciation affected the distribution of fishes. I especially enjoyed the way the chapters of the book are divided by drainages. Small Dogs, Great Book

Small Dogs, Big Hearts: A Guide to Caring for Your Little Dog, by Darlene Arden, is simply a wonderful book. It takes the reader on a journey from puppyhood to adulthood and old age, in sickness and in health. Arden carefully points out the many ways in which the Toy breeds have unique needs that larger dogs do not have, at the same time emphasizing that they are indeed dogs and so benefit from training in exactly the same ways as larger dogs.

One of the most interesting points pertinent to this is the discussion of dog training in Britain, where dogs are ubiquitous but also welcome everywhere, because dog owners in the United Kingdom take for granted that all dogs should be well socialized and trained regardless of their size. This is particularly important in the case of Toy breeds, because they can turn into obnoxious little monsters if they are untrained and spoiled. We've all run into these Lap Sharks; they aren't that way because they're small, but because they haven't been trained.

The book contains a wonderful section on nutrition, noting that the energy needs, pound for pound, of a tiny dog are much higher than those of a large dog because of their higher metabolism rate. Furthermore, the author explains the special needs of Toy dogs when they are faced with medical problems, surgery and anesthesia. For example, during surgery, fluid levels and internal temperature control are critical in these dogs. Little dogs, when they fast for surgery, may experience precipitate decreases in blood sugar.

There is a fascinating section, with photos, on the various breeds of Toy dogs, their characteristics, personalities and any genetic problems. Also, in mid-book, there is an unbeatable group of color photos, page after page, absolutely delightful.

The author concludes with an appendix that includes traveling with small dogs; clothing (little dogs get cold!); supplies, toys and training aids; treats; and stuff for you, the owner.

I can't say enough good thinngs about this fine book. You'll like it even if you don't have a Little dog; you'll like it even if you don't have a dog at all.

Very Good Resource, Extensive Health Info

I was very anxious to get this book. In fact by the time I realized there was a second edition of the Irrepressible Toy Dog, I had been waiting several months. This lead me to several other small dog/ breed specific books. This book is definitely top notch However, I was a little biased having read similar information in several other books before reading this book. This made me less excited about its content, however I have to say that it is extremely well compiled, lots of good information and has the best health section on small breed specific disease that I have seen to date. The picture sections are cute, however it could have included more breeds instead of the same breeds over and over. It however was not as much fun as other books, and lacks in the training section when compared to other books. It is a great overall guide on toy dogs and every toy dog owner should keep a copy for a reference guide.

Great book for first-time toy dog owners

I hate to be the voice of negativity among all the GREAT raves that this book got. I actually bought this book based on the reviews by other customers. It is a good book and specifies unique needs of small (especially toy) dogs. HOWEVER, as is often the case with an all encompassing book, this book would be great for first-time owners of toy dogs. I enjoyed the original edition which convinced me to get a toy dog (Papillons). If you are an experienced toy dog owner, you would only get a few things out of this book. This is the problem I find with these kind of books. It gets repetitive for the avid dog-book reader. The book doesn't address the intelligence of dogs and just glosses over each breed's characteristics. The photos in the books were great though.

lousy text

terrible textbook

I took this course from the university that the author taught at. the book was this textbook. the pedagogy was terrible, some units such as (At/m) were not properly defined, the commentary was minimal except where it was copied from other books. it seems that the auther cannot be bothered to give a thorough explanation of the the basic concepts, and would only add in text as an afterthought. as a practicing professional in the field and as someone who has taught university level courses, I would say, find another textbook

Good basic book of motor/generators

If you need an engineering introduction into generators, motors, transformers, and the likes this book is good. The illustrations not only show simplistic diagrams but actual machines one will find in the job. Has solved examples and end of chapter questions. Covers a lot of ground but delivers the concepts well.

Reads like a cookbook, not an engineering textbook!

I've just finished a university course with this book as the reference, and it's not been a happy experience. The author has a poor grasp of the concept of grammar-checking, and doesn't follow his own standards (sometimes including the imaginary "i"/"j" in formulas and sometimes leaving it out).

But the biggest problem is, the author makes no attempt to get the reader/student to understand WHY and HOW machine behavior is derived. Instead of deriving any equations (via KCL/KVL), PC Sen lists the equations as-is and expects you to memorize them.

Unfortunately, this is an engineering course and not English Lit: engineers need explanations and mathematics, not a "plug the variable in here and substitute to determine the answer" book.

Throughout the course the professor would have to point out inconstencies in the formulas provided and direct students to alternative online references as a substitute for this poor book's pitiful attempt at explaining power electronics to readers.
