My favorite textbook

Do you know how sometimes when you move, one box mysteriously disappears? For me, this book was in THAT box twenty years ago, and I have wanted to replace it ever since.

This book was my favorite textbook in college. I enjoyed it and the class enough that I changed my major to computer science, and my focus within computer science to theory. I was the teaching assistant for this class during four consecutive semesters, so I had the pleasure of helping an entire class of undergraduates wrestle with and eventually comprehend the material in this book.

I'm so glad to have found a copy in decent shape to call my own. One of my daughters has started to express an interest in computer science, and I wanted to be able to share this book with her.

Great book for first course in Process Control

This is a great book for a first course in process control. It has a very good layout that builds up concepts until the end. I agree that this book may not be an ideal reference book because it is hard to pick up half way through. However, I think it lays out the foundation for true understanding of the subject. I keep this book on my shelf at all times and find myself reaching for it to refresh my memory on control concepts.

This is the ONLY chemical engineering book that I like

Four years of chemical engineering education and finally, a book worth remembering. Seborg leaves nothing out. From the simplest principles to the weirdest homework problems, the book does a great job of TEACHING, not just INFORMING. As a reference, it might not be too great, but for pure teaching effect, this is the absolute best choice.

Not bad, but not great

Unlike the other Chemical Engineering courses I took, this was the most abstract. This book was boring to read. The only reason I understand process control was because the teacher supplemented the course with some additional material. This book gives the necessary basics but does not go into great detail (could be either good or bad) and gives very weak example problems. The homework problems are much better (try and figure that one out!). Thankfully, Seborg has a new edition out. Let's hope it's better than the previous.

About the Author

Azzedine Boukerche, PhD, is a Canada Research Chair Professor in wireless and mobile computing at the University of Ottawa, Canada. He is the Founding Director of PARADISE Research Laboratory, also at the University of Ottawa. Dr. Boukerche is a well-known and internationally respected researcher in his field. He has published numerous papers in the fields of wireless networks, mobile and pervasive computing, and wireless ad hoc and sensor networks. As an associate editor, program chair, and general chair, he has contributed to many international journals and conferences in the area of wireless and mobile networking, wireless ad hoc, and sensor and mesh networking. He has also received several national and international awards for excellence in research and his scientific contributions to the field of wireless and mobile networks.

Jim Keogh is on the faculty of Columbia University and Saint Peter’s College in Jersey City, New Jersey. He developed the e-commerce tract at Columbia University. Jim has spent decades developing applications for major Wall Street corporations and is the author of more than 70 books, including Java Database Programming For Dummies, Unix Programming For Dummies, and Linux Programming For Dummies.

Great programming book for VB 2005

Programming isn't always an easy concept to pick up but this Visual book definitely makes it as easy as possible. It starts off by explaining the basics of Visual Basic programming and has the reader create a "Hello World" application. The reader is then introduced to forms, controls and other various application components. After the basics are out of the way the reader is introduced to how variables and expressions are used. That section can be found in almost all basic programming books. However every language is a little different and really will save long nights of "Why won't this work like the XYZ programming language" questions.

More advanced programming concepts are introduced in the second half of the book such as: Classes, Subroutines and Functions. Understanding these concepts will result in reusable code and ultimately means less time developing and more time relaxing.

After the reader has completed this book they will not only understand the programming concepts but will also have a complete application which uses the concepts found in this book.

Overall I found this book to be a very good guide to programming Visual Basic 2005 and I highly recommend it.

Excellent Heat X-Fer but So-So Mass X-Fer

I used this textbook for a few years when teaching a course in heat and mass transfer. The heat transfer parts are some of the best I've seen. Very clear explanations and great diagrams. The mass transfer material is not all that great. The authors are mechanical engineers but mass transfer is really the domain of chemical engineers. They're not as often clear (or even totally correct) in the mass transfer sections. There used to be a heat transfer only version of this textbook which might be a better buy. For mass transfer I would use any established chemical engineering textbook.

Thorough heat transfer book

This is an excellent text for the heat transfer novice, both as a supplement to a class and as a personal teaching tool. The writing is easy to understand, and the chapters are arranged logically. The examples are well chosen and usually demonstrate how the theory and equations can be put to good use.
I have only two complaints about this text: There are far too few sample problems (and no problems with only answers provided) and the mass transfer is not taught in a useful way. The prior is a failure of many text books, but the latter is a major drawback. Incropera and Dewitt basically say "Mass transfer is the same as heat transfer, except use these units and equations." All of the mass transfer is tucked into a few chapters, as if it was an afterthought.
I recommend this book to anyone interested in the fundamentals of heat transfer, but look elsewhere for a useful introduction to mass transfer.

Excellent heat and mass transfer book

I thought this book covered conduction and convection heat
transfer well, but I thought a better job could have been
done on the section about radiation heat transfer. Perhapes
more examples of radiation problems could have been used to
make the subject more clear.

I thought the mass transfer sections were well written and
easy to understand.

The solution guide to the problems are not available to the
students. As with all engineering books, I think the solution
guides should be available to the students to promote quicker
and more efficient learning.
