Toward the end of this book, Powell (Univ. of Wales) sums up his approach as proceeding from ideals expressed to realities suffered.' A striking example of this is the chapter titled 'The Theft of Pietas,' in which the author argues that Virgil, unable to credit Octavian with pietas, creates the image of a pius ancestor, Aeneas, the incarnation of this virtue, which would then be transferred by association to Octavian. Powell himself is much more partial toward Sextus Pompeius--witness Sextus Pompeius, which he edited with Kathryn Welch (2002)--a fierce opponent of Octavian who styled himself Magnus Pius. One of Powells objectives here is to shift the focus of Virgilian studies from individual works to the whole oeuvre and to see one intention in all of them, to defend the cause of Octavian-Augustus. Although he accepts the premises behind analyses of Virgils works based on genre and architecture, Powell sees an overarching political structure. In elaborating this thesis he makes good use of neglected ancient historians of the period--Suetonius, Appian, Dio Cassius. His countercurrent argument is bound to stir up much controversy among traditional Virgilian scholars, which is all to the good. An absorbing read. Summing Up: Highly recommended. A good book for FileMaker "users" wanting to become "developers"

When choosing a book of this type, it's important to realize who the target audience is.

The overwhelming majority of FileMaker Pro users are beginners in database design and development. Most of these people have either read the manual or figured out the basics on their own, and can wield FMP as an office productivity tool just fine. (If you are purchasing this book, and have not read the FMP manuals, I suggest that you do so, they are well written, not painfully long, and quite useful to get started.)

This book is aimed at helping people get to the next step; from office productivity user to fledgling developer, and it serves that purpose very well.

If you want to learn more about design and scripting in FMP, then buy this book. After you've mastered this material, go for some of the more advanced texts out there.

We purchased the FileMaker v.11 from Amazon, and MISTAKENLY accepted their recommendation to purchase a "package" consisting of two books, in addition to the software. Well, the software is v.11, and the "Dummies" book talks exclusively about v.8! Somewhere between v.8 and v.11, there must have been a sea change in the software, because the "Dummies" book is of ABSOLUTELY no use!
As we know, there's practically no (usable) documentation coming with software packages these days, and the Dummies books are usually of great help. Here, though, somebody at Amazon was apparently not watching the store.

This book could change your life (seriously!)

I have to admit that I was extremely skeptical when I picked up this book, but I was getting desperate. I'm 33 and disabled by lower back problems and fibromyalgia, and none of the many doctors, physical therapists, or holistic practitioners I've seen have been able to help me feel any better. So this book was a long shot, but it actually helped!

The detox plan outlined in this book was designed to flush chemical toxins out of your body system by system, from the inside out. Each week of the plan concentrates on a different area (i.e. liver, lymph, skin, etc.). The basic tenets are as follows: No meat, alcohol, wheat, dairy, refined sugar, preservatives, or processed foods for a month. Each week you will take a different batch of supplements and herbal teas that help to strengthen certain bodily systems. Do your best to avoid household chemicals, and eat organic whenever possible.

Sound tricky? It is, at first anyway. I couldn't imagine what I'd eat, but one visit to the health food store was very reassuring. There are so many healthy substitutes for wheat, dairy and sugar these days, what with so many people developing allergies to these foods. I admit that I was tired of salad by week 3, but that was probably due to a lack of creativity on my part. With a little ingenuity, you can make it through, and be healthier by the end. A Word of Warning: buying organic foods and household products from health food stores is VERY expensive. Be prepared to spend a lot more on these products than you usually do. You may want to set aside $500 to $1000 for this endevor, if you want to do it right.

As with any detox program (or so I've read), you may feel terrible for a day or two here and there, as the toxins leave your body. My husband and I experienced headaches and some achiness at first, but they didn't last long. Stick with the program, and they'll disappear.

This book is full of ideas on how to eat for health, even after your 4 weeks is up. The only reason I gave it four stars instead of five is that the author doesn't always back up her claims with medical or scientific evidence. This was a bit unnerving, but I took her word on most things, and I don't regret it. Although my back problems will probably never go away, my fibromyalgia is more in control than ever before, and I've learned how to eat to avoid flare-ups.

I highly recommend this book to anyone suffering from chronic systemic problems - it could ease your pain significantly. Give it a shot before you give up!

A little disorganized

I'm actually beginning the detox in a few days. But I'm one of those people who likes to know exactly what they're in for. So I read the whole book at one go. The bit that baffled me is there was no clear section that said DO THIS during week 1 and THIS during week 2. Instead, there was a small section here that said DO THIS during week 1 and then a few pages later in a seemingly unrelated segment, more DO THIS during week 1. I would like to see any subsequent reprints of this book to group together all the phase detox DO THIS activities all together... As it is, I've had to create my own Word file that pulls pieces from multiple chapters to make sure I don't miss something Cook recommends during each phase of the detoxing. I spent enough on the book to feel like I shouldn't have to spend additional time on my own creating a template to follow to adhere to the plan. Additionally, weekly shopping lists would be helpful -- as would a a set of descriptors on various choices at the health food store (like do I buy apple pectin -- which I ultimately chose -- or grapefruit pectin for week 1 -- and why??)
All that said, the narrative makes sense and is easy to read. I agree with a previous reviewer about the lack of citing existing research to back up claims -- but then, we all know there is a shortage of research into the field of detox and even less into how natural foods and herbs heal. To me, this lack is not such an issue. While others may appreciate the organization efforts, it made no sense to me.

A worthy investment

Although I am already a vegetarian and use non toxic environmentally friendly cleaning products I found this a challenging detox program. I sought to clear up an unpleasant skin condition. I found the program challenging enough that I couldn't just jump right in and follow it 100%. Instead I gave up diet pop a month and a half before, I gave up OTC makeup two weeks before and I gave up coffee the first day. It's been a struggle to learn new habits. I even upgraded on Amazon and bought the online version so I could refresh my memory during my lunch at work. There is a lot to do. I, obviously, took it seriously. There wasn't a day that went by that I followed it perfectly. For instance, I would forget and eat wheat or have a small portion of cheese. Even so, by the second week I started to notice the plan working. It has definitely toned and tightened my entire body. I've noticed quite an improvement in my skin condition. The four weeks isn't enough for me, I plan on cycling back to week one and recleansing my organs and body. Like the author says, the damage we've done to our bodies didn't occur overnight, it takes awhile to clear them up. This diet plan has been tremendously beneficial to me.

GARY S. MAY, PhD, is Professor in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Dr. May is a Fellow of the IEEE and Senior Member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. He has published more than 150 articles and given over 100 technical presentations in the area of IC computer-aided manufacturing.

COSTAS J. extensive summary of fabs

For those of you working in a fab, or designing processes to be used in it, May gives a good summary of what is generally known and non-proprietary. He explains the key steps in photolithography, wet and dry etching, the different ways to dope, and deposition processes.

But along with these steps, every fab needs to monitor them for quality control. So we get discussions of how to measure data about a wafer. Like using inteferometry or ellipsometry to measure the thickness of a deposited thin film. Or using a four point probe for capacitance or resistance measurements.

A lot of the text also deals with statistics and how to maximise your device yield. Involves numerous modelling choices and process controls.

Good to take the overview of SPC and Semiconductor processes

The beginning chapters cover the semiconductor processes, and the last half chapters cover fundamental level of Statistical Process Control. Some explanations about the SPC are not sufficient because of the limited pages, compared to books of SPC. However, this book contains a lot of useful tables, and it is a good size to carry around. Thus, I think this is a good book to review SPC and Semiconductor Processes quickly.

Good book on the mathematics of acoustics for engineers

This book is aimed squarely at engineering students who want to learn the mathematics of acoustics. There is very little in the realm of standing back and asking "So what does this all mean?". From the very first chapter the author dives into deriving equations that use calculus, Laplace transforms, the Fourier series and transform, circuit analysis, digital filters, and the Z- transform as well as some differential equations. There are few examples in the book, but there are problem sets that expect you to understand the theory and math well enough to apply it numerically with more intuitive knowledge than is presented. It can be done, but you'll have to read carefully when doing the exercises to figure out how to get from A to B. If you are interested in acoustics this is probably an essential reference pertaining to the mathematical aspects of the science, but you'll need other books to get the big picture. I'd recommend the old Schaum's Outline of Acoustics by Seto as a companion to this book since it has lots of examples. Unfortunately, it is out of print and you'll probably have to hunt for it.

OK, but better texts available

Personally, I was disappointed by the fourth edition of this venerable text, for it has become increasingly mathematical and problem oriented. If you like sitting down and whiling away your afternoon with a problem set -- this is the text for you. But if instead you wish to study acoustics through a pedagogical method that is more verbal and graphical in nature -- better texts are available.
Indeed, in my opinion, prior editions (1950, 1962, 1981) of this same text are superior, particularly the second edition. Although these too have their share of integral calculus and complex algebra, the quantity is more appropriate for a discipline that is mostly science and engineering but with aspects of art to it as well.
Bear in mind that aside from a few specialized areas -- like ultrasonics and its use in non-destructive testing, or the use of digital processing in sound generation and analysis -- little new has come about in the field of acoustics since World War II. Thus unlike with most fields of science, there is no necessity to have the most modern texts to gather a wholly modern understanding of the field.
Indeed, I recently examined almost every text relating to acoustics contained in the circumferential stacks of the Barker Engineering Library under the Great Dome of M.I.T. (and sadly, there aren't as many texts as one might hope). I was surprised both at the age of most volumes in the collection -- and the fact that most had not been checked out of the library in years.
Indeed, from the "Date Due" slips in the back, you could see the field was very popular in the 1960's and 1970's, but popularity seemed to wain in the early 1980's -- approximately contemporaneously, curiously, with the introduction of the digital CD format of audio recording.
By the mid-1990's, at M.I.T., at least, interest in acoustics among faculty and students seem to have declined precipitiously, if the popularity of library texts and the quantity of student theses published in the field is any indication.
Of all the general texts on acoustics that I examined -- to me, one clearly stood out above the others. It was published in 1957 by the lead acoustical scientist at the RCA Research Laboratories in Princeton, New Jersey, Harry F. Olsen, Ph.D. It is entitled, "Acoustical Engineering", although it contains all the fundamental science as well. This text was reprinted in 1991 and is currently available.
Olsen's work is surely a magnum opus, comprising 736 pages and 567 illustrations. It has its fair share of math, but the concepts are often additionally explained through well-crafted line drawings, showing, for example, wave forms drawn in progressive fashion in serial graphs, some of which are designed so that one can even mentally rotate the graphics to gather a three-dimensional perspective. Furthermore, the graphs are often supplemented by equivalent mechanical and electrical analogs, to further assist in understanding.
Best of all, Olsen explains virtually everything acoustical you would ever want to know, from theories of acoustical wave propagation, to an enormous variety of loudspeaker designs, to the mathematical reasoning behind Johann Sebastian Bach's tempered tuning of musical instruments, an artistic practice that is almost universal today.
Thus if it is a text for a problem-oriented course in acoustics that one seeks -- the fourth edition of the "Fundamentals of Acoustics" is a fine text. However, if one wishes to have a ready reference that is extraordinarily comprehensive, or a pedagogical work that doesn't focus on mathematical derivations, better choices can surely be made.

Highly reccommend to anyone using lab equipment

Mr. Coyne's experience and reseach shines through in the text. He includes excellent reference materials, charts and tables guide you on many practical lab activities, from simple, such as how to insert tubing into rubber stoppers, to complex, as in operating vacumn devices. In view of the excellent job he did in this book, I have requested that he consider writing a second in a series addressing how, why and when to use specific or unusual glassware, such as Graham, Allihn, and the various kinds of condensers, drying tubes, separatory funnels and the many other types of specialized glassware there seems to be little published about.

Coyne's book shares a wealth of information regarding laboratory equipment such as standard glassware, volumetrics, vacuum greases and oils. It also manages to cover fundamental basic vacuum and air sensitive techniques in terms that don't require a Phd. I highly recommend this book to Chemistry technicians , graduate students and scientists as a reference guide to safe procedures and materials.

Great food.....Great Read.

Walter Scheib's White House Chef is a fascinating and compelling memoir of the inner workings of the White House kitchen and what it takes to be the Executive Chef of the House. After reading the book, I was greatly encouraged that this was not yet another tabloid infused penning of the lives of high profile people. It reads as a forthright account about Chef Scheib's personal interactions with the First Families and his kitchen family in both daily events and even the life-harrowing event of 911. The Chef's retelling of what it was like to be in the White House during September 11 is not to be missed.

In addition to reading the book, I thought it was important to experience the Chef's cuisine. As a professional cook, I sought out to test the recipes in my kitchen and see if they actually work. Both the Cream of Celery Root Soup and the Thai-Spiced Sweet Potato Soup with Gingered Bok Choy were absolutely fabulous. The Cream of Celery Root Soup could easily be adapted for Vegans (by the omission of cream) and still taste great. The last dish I cooked was the Curried Chicken with Basmati. It is an incredibly aromatic dish that is both satisfying and flavorful. I did have to tweak the seasonings and the directions because I increased the proportion size quite a bit. In fact, I used the recipe for a catering. I simply replaced the whole chicken with chicken breasts. The dish was gone in no time and received some very positive reviews.

As the Camp David Executive Chef for three years (standard military tour) I am thrilled to see my boss with such a wonderful book. He has done a beautiful job with it! The recipes are WOW and the story is REAL.

I wish there had been dozens of pages of color food photographs but the photos enclosed of people and story is more than enough to get FIVE STARS! Walter is a wonderful and loving person always interested in doing right and well. A great leader and realistic manager of peace and productivity.

The book as was written by Mr. Friedman is interesting and electryfing to read. It seems like everyone involved did a super good job of teamwork. Typical for normal people doing extra-ordinary results! As a cookbook with awesome recipes - enjoy! As a storybook with fascinating anecdotes - enjoy!

A wonderful read and great look into the daily routine of White House living

Scheib has given us a pretty good look into the life of a White House chef under two administrations: one (the Clintons) that really wanted to make the White House into a place of entertainment and a place to show off America's best foods, and one that, well, isn't interested in that.

The recipes are good, interesting, and worth the cost of the book as well.

But what I find most interesting in the book, and what I was most hoping for when I ordered it, was a look at the non-flashy daily grind of life in the White House, and Scheib provides us many anecdotes, from Bill Clinton ordering huge steaks when his wife was away, to George Bush popping his head into the kitchen after a run and asking "What's for lunch?"

I enjoyed the stories of the giant dinners and elegant soirees, but it was the daily stuff I found most interesting: where the First Families enjoyed eating, their comfort foods, Chelsea Clinton making cookies with friends, Chelsea's first adult-style evening of entertaining, Scheib fighting with the purchasing staff to get better quality produce, that Bush likes his toasted cheese sandwiches cut at an angle, how the White House staff fill the elevator at lunch time making it difficult for the chef to get food to the president while still hot, the personalities of different people, and so on. While it is a world famous house, with incredibly important stuff going on, it's still a workplace for many with all the personality adventures of a workplace, and it's also home for one family that, for the most part, act like any other family or any other people. That is the aspect of the book I most appreciated, and which I wish had a lot more.

I also appreciate that Scheib refused to dish dirt on either family, or use the book as avenue to embarrass to sensationalize.

While the book is wonderful as it is, I think that a book about more than a decade in the White House deserves a lot more text. It reads much too quickly for subject matter that is this interesting and fascinating. Color photographs would have been more appropriate, too.

"White House Chef" shows some of the excitement of the big state dinners and other large entertainments, but is mostly an intimate look at some of the daily grind of the presidential family and the White House. Although we cannot all be president, we all eat, and so a book looking through the lens of food makes for a compelling read, tying us together on a more human level than just a biography or history book. But it should have been bigger, more in-depth, and with color photographs. Not many people are in a position to write a first-person account about being the chef at the White House. The rarity of that situation, I think, deserves a much more in-depth cover of the experience, and that's why I give this four stars.
