About the Author
Bill Slavicsek began playing the DUNGEONS & DRAGONS roleplaying game with his friends during his formative teenage years in New York City. This was in 1977, the same year that Star Wars and Sword of Shannara debuted. This trilogy of epic fantasy combined with comic books and horror novels were to forever influence Bill’s outlook on life and entertainment. In 1986, Bill’s hobby became his career when he joined the staff of West End Games. There, as an editor and game designer, Bill worked on a number of board games and roleplaying games, including Ghostbusters, Paranoia, Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game, and Torg: Roleplaying the Possibility Wars. Later, Bill went on to use his vast knowledge of the Star Wars films and associated extensions to write two editions of A Guide to the Star Wars Universe for Lucasfilm, Ltd., and published by Del Rey Books.
In 1993, Bill joined the staff of TSR, Inc., then publishers of the DUNGEON & DRAGONS game lines, as a game designer and editor. His design credits for the company include the ALTERNITY Science Fiction Game (which he co-designed with Richard Baker), the d20 Modern Roleplaying Game, the d20 Star Wars Roleplaying Game, the Star Wars Miniatures Game, Urban Arcana, Council of Wyrms, and the EBERRON Campaign Setting.
Since 1997, Bill has been the Director of Roleplaying Games Research and Development for Wizards of the Coast, Inc., the company that now publishes all DUNGEONS & DRAGONS novels and game products. He oversaw the creation of the d20 Roleplaying Game System and the newest edition of the DUNGEONS & DRAGONS game. Bill leads a talented staff of game designers, developers, and editors who produce award-winning game products for DUNGEONS & DRAGONS and other d20 System game lines, including roleplaying game supplements and accessories, adventures and campaign books, and prepainted plastic miniatures.

Richard Baker is an award-winning game designer and a best-selling author. He’s worked on the DUNGEONS & DRAGONS game lines since 1991. Rich traces his D&D experience back to 1979, when he began playing the DUNGEONS & DRAGONS game as a 7th-grader. He spent a significant amount of his high school and college years playing D&D at every opportunity, and after serving as a surface warfare officer in the United States Navy, Rich decided to take a shot at working on the game he grew up playing — and so he joined the staff of TSR, Inc., and became a game designer. Nice, but the constant ads for WOTC were annoying

I picked this up based on reviews I've read about an earlier edition. As a relatively new dungeon master who is about to launch my own 4th Edition campaign I thought this book could be helpful.

To be positive, the book was helpful in a lot of places. However there were a number of places, such as the section where the book discusses creating adventures, where I felt the book could have gone into more detail.

However what turned me off this book was the constant advertising spam the authors inserted for other WOTC D&D products. This annoyed me for three reasons. Firstly, a lot of the promotions were out of context with regards the material being discussed. Secondly, at times they interrupted the flow of the topic the authors were writing about and lastly they pushed the same product over and over again.

All in all the book contains some good advice, but it is overshadowed by a large amount of unnecessary advertising.

A Terrific Companion For Novice Dungeon Masters

Part of the fun of playing Dungeons and Dragons is being the story teller aka referee aka Dungeon Master. The idea is that other PC (Player Characters) are exploring your world and learning to overcome challenges that you create for them. The book is a good place to begin if you've never DM'd before since the authors are all skilled DM's and write from their own experiences.

You're given game etiquette and how to host a game session advice as well as PC styles of play whether it's the Rules Lawyer who invokes the rules at every opportunity or the Power Gamer who builds his character for ultimate power, you're given ideas on how to deal with these types of mind sets which has proved helpful to me.

I've DM'd in both 1st & 2nd edition of D&D and really felt lost in the new 3.0/3.5 editions. I have a lot of the rule books and supplements for 3.0 and I was kind of disappointed this was not covered in this book. I mean what does one do if they have a substantial investment in 3.0 edition books and all of a sudden, they're outdated?!?!?!?! I feel the authors could have discusses this a bit and given some ideas and ways around that setback.

For a Novice DM, the sample town given in the book is a great place to use as a backdrop for your first games. The book does a nice job of dichotomizing a campaign based series of adventures versus the single module type of ones and even mentioned that you can interconnect these modules to create an ongoing campaign. (FYI: A campaign is where the PC's use the same characters from start to finish whereas a module based style of play means the PC's can roll up new characters to play)

The Tens lists are helpful and many of the modules I'd never heard of before. (Used my own world primarily for 1st edition and Forgotten Realms for 2nd edition) Some of the modules I'm going to go out and get. In fact, Wizards of the Coast have graciously allowed many old 1st & 2nd edition modules & supplements to be downloaded free at their website.

Overall I think the book rates 4.5 stars but I was quite disappointed at no mention for how to reconcile 3.0 & 3.5 core rulebooks & supplements!

Essential reading for electronic and communications engineer

I bought my first copy of this essential text in 1976, and have never found a better reference source on the principles of grounding and shielding. Few engineers seem to understand the action of screened cables, especially, and chapter 2 gives an excellent introduction

Couldn't put it down.

I build EEG sensors, and I started reading this book, expecting something like The Art of Electronics, except more detailed and covering only noise techniques. Instead, I got much, much more. The diagrams made *much* more sense than Horowitz and Hill's AOE, and the explanations were clear and consise. I was able to read it cover to cover in a weekend without getting bored from too much detail, and it had many many real measurements of noise in systems that made the information much more quantitative.

For instance, instead of saying "in order to get the most noise reduction, you need to use a shielded cable only grounded on one end", he says "a shielded cable grounded on one end has 84dB of attenuation to magnetic noise and much more for electric, while if the shield is grounded at both ends the attenuation is more like 36dB".

Those numbers are critical if you're trying to balance signal quality with cost.

Noise Reduction Techniques

There is a specific topic in this book that I have not seem covered in any of the 25+ book that I have on electromagnetic phenomena. The topic is the shield cut-off frequency of a coaxial cable. Common-mode currents at low frequencies (below a few hundred hertz) cause noise problems with coaxial cables, but signals above tens of kilohertz do not. This is vital data which is apparently not explained in many text books. For me, this topic justifies the cost of the text. Having said that, I am annoyed because the book is quite expensive relative to other books of its size and age. The point is that you have to buy it, but it is expensive to do so.
Even an advanced designer will benefit from this book, although you, like me, won't necessarily want to read all of it. It is sufficient to pick and choose areas of particular interest. The less advanced designer would clearly benefit more and the book would therefore represent better value for them. Given a choice between this one and Morrison's Grounding and Shielding Techniques in Instrumentation, pick this one. This one is more technically accurate and useful.

Terzaghi's Original Masterpiece

This text is the original full-length in English by Karl Terzaghi, the father of soil mechanics. (An earlier book was published in German in 1925.) This book provides the theroetical basis for Terzaghi's approach to the subject and provides the theoretical background for the later work, Soil Mechanics in Engineering Practice. The latter book has been rewritten and updated twice by coauthors since its original introduction in the late 1940s and remains an indispensable textbook. Both books should be on every geotechnical engineer's bookshelf.

State-of-the-art soil mechanics textbook

Even tons of soil mechanics, foundation engineering and any textsbooks related to geotechnical problems are available in past 50 years, Theoretical Soil Mechanics by Terzaghi is still the best soil mechanics reference ever. It is excellent soil mechanics textbook since the contents describe not only numerical methods but also the physical meaning underlying those methods in geotech field. Many geotechnical textbooks, right now, can be categorized as applications of the soil mechanics theories contained in this textbook. I would recommend to have it as a main reference for civil engineers especially geotechnical engineers or even book-lover!

It's a classic. Terzaghi invented the science of soil mechanics with this book. Originally written in German. Amazingly, much of the book is still very useful today

Good but complicated

I am using this book as part of my graduate class. Before I got this book, I was using the old edition, believe me the old edition is much simpler, easier to understand than this new one. They have integrated the book with overwhelming symbols for which they do not even have the key/index. You spend a lot of time figuring out what the symbols mean. So, I would recommend that you try to get a hold of the old edition of the book, however remember that the old edition does not cover the modelling part and does not give you exposure to the problem sets.

So, the bottom line is that if you want to get an understanding and feel of the subject goahead for the old edition, but if this is your core area of research and do not mind a bit of complication in the writing and explanation, go for the new edition.

Perhaps a good reference text, but it's supposed to be a graduate intro text

Compared to the 1st edition this text is about twice the size. It is a monstrously large book. However, the book fails to teach the concepts in a clear fashion required when one is just starting in the field. Too much attention is spent to minute details that confound the subject. A great deal of space is used on deriving formulas.

It is without a doubt that the authors are exceptional minds in their fields, and have a fine understanding of the material. However, speaking as a student, they do me no favors in explaining what is going on. This text needs to be rewritten and edited to serve as a useful textbook for graduate students. Until then, the book will possibly be useful as a reference.

Great Environmental Chemistry Book but Dense

This is a very comprehensive environmental chemistry book, and I would highly recommend this book for any graduate level environmental chemistry class. Schwarzenbach's book targets graduate students (or advanced undergraduates) in environmental chemistry, environmental engineering and chemical engineering. As such, the reader should be well versed in chemistry and math including organic chemistry, thermodynamics and kinetics. The introductory chapters help catch up the user on organic chemistry but in no way should be the reader's first exposure to chemistry concepts. The strength of this book is to help train students to solve environmental chemistry issues especially organic chemistry, though it does lack a little in transport concepts and inorganic chemistry. However, other texts/classes are need to address these issues.

The book is very thorough and a highly useful reference. Having been a teaching assistant to classes that have used this book as well as lectured from it, I recommend that the entirety of the book be taught over 2 semesters. Trying to teach all this material in two semesters is a challenge let alone one semester.

In summary, this is a great thorough environmental chemistry book that is a great reference as I still go to it from time to time to help solve an address environmental chemistry issues. The book targets graduate students already familiar with organic chemistry and thermodynamics and should be taught over 2 semesters.

a must read for new students in architecture

I think "architectural theory" is the most interesting and important subject to me as an architectural student. It is also a very difficult subject, i always have the feeling that i have to learn more. There are a lot of names to remember, sometimes background knowledges( usually of history, philosophy, or maybe fine arts) are needed to understand certain points that great theorists made. One feel quite lost in this sea of words, don't know how and where to start learning more about this treasure.
With this book you don't have to have too much prior knowledge in other related fields i mentioned above to make sense of the author's point. It helps you to have more insight into how architectural theory comes about in practice. This book clarified a lot of things that I wasn't too sure about after reading "big books" by famous theorists ( They are often difficult for an average student like me to understand.) Written in plain english, this book is easy to read. It would have saved me a lot of time if I had a chance to read it when I was in first year. I recommend it to all students embarking their architectural studies.
The extensive reference list in the appendix was a big bonus.

About the Author
Kelly L. Murdock has been authoring computer books for many years now and still gets immense enjoyment from the completed work. His book credits include various Web, graphics, and multimedia titles, including five previous editions of this book, 3ds Max 8 Bible.
Other major accomplishments include Master VISUALLY HTML and XHTML, JavaScript Visual Blueprint, gmax Bible, Adobe Atmosphere Bible, Maya 6 and 7 Revealed, LightWave 3D 8 Revealed, Poser 6 Revealed, and co-authoring duties on two editions of the Illustrator Bible (for versions 9 and 10) and two editions of the Adobe Creative Suite Bible.
With a background in engineering and computer graphics, Kelly has been all over the 3D industry and still finds it fascinating. He’s used high-level CAD workstations for product design and analysis, completed several large-scale visualization projects, created 3D models for feature films, worked as a freelance 3D artist, and even done some 3D programming. Kelly’s been using 3D Studio since version 3 for DOS.
In his spare time, Kelly enjoys the outdoors while rock climbing, mountain biking, or skiing. He works at the design company he co-founded with his brother Chris: Logical Paradox Design.

Another example of how NOT to write an instruction manual

Looking through this book I saw immediately that it suffered from the same problem as it's predecessor: lack of thought to the student's learning path.

It is a problem that is almost universal to computer instructional guides do... lack of any educational theory in its writing. It does not guide the newcomer through the art of learning the software, but rather deals with issues as if one is going through the menu commands. The tutorials consistantly use elements and commands that one will not cover for another hundred por more pages, and the chapters are not designed to "build on the student's knowledge" but rather to give all information about a given cocept right from the beginning. Thus, I am taught how to personalise the user interface and use XREFs (external references) before I am told how to create even the simplest of objects.

I am an experienced 3D analylist, with knowledge of CAD and GIS, so I am not the least experienced of readers on this topic. Even so I found it frequently infuriating to attempt to learn this software using this book.

When I struggled with Max I was looking for a book that would help me learn. After reading this book I knew the ends and out of Max. It made me extremley proficient in the jargon and aware of all the buttons on the interface. It also gave me techniques to use which I chopped and used in other projects. Its a huge book but if you invest the time and money and are truley serious about Max then it would definately benefit you to have this book. THIS BOOK SAVED MY LIFE

I find this a well written resource of value to newcomers to the subject. It will have a place beside the computer for years to come. Truly an indepth exposition on the program.

Those seeking artistic inspiration with the software should look elsewhere.
