About the Author
Howie Southworth is an experienced teacher, trainer, and facilitator with a background in both student and instructor development. His academic degrees are in computer science (BA) and higher education administration (MA). He has been consulting on the use of online course management systems for the past 5 years, and teaching people how to teach for the past 15.
Howie has been invited to teach across the United States, Asia, and Europe. He is the director of education for the Disaster Recovery Institute International in Washington, D.C.

Yianna Vovides holds a PhD in instructional design and technology and works at The George Washington University, Washington, D.C. Dr. Vovides assists faculty with the integration of instructional technologies in teaching and learning. She is the lead instructor in the use of the Blackboard Learning System and Blackboard Content System and designs and implements learning environments for both blended-hybrid and fully online courses.

Kemal Cakici has expertise in designing and implementing information systems solutions in the contexts of education and healthcare and has worked as a consultant in industry. He has taught business, information systems, and engineering courses as a faculty member. His academic degrees are in mechanical engineering (BS and MS). He is completing his doctoral studies in information and decision systems focusing on predicting the acceptance and usage of Web-based information systems. Kemal is working as a senior consultant for IMS Government Solutions.

Susan M. Zvacek, director of instructional development and support at the University of Kansas, has been involved with educational technology for more than 20 years and has worked in community college, university, and corporate training environments. Dr. Zvacek’s teaching experience includes faculty and dissertation advisor positions at the University of Northern Colorado, Old Dominion University, and Nova Southeastern University.

nice reference for using blackboard

A good book for instructors using Blackboard

I'm a Blackboard system administrator, so I read this book looking for things that I would like for our faculty members to know. I thought it did a very good job of providing them with basic explanations of features and ideas for using those features. I also enjoyed the paragraphs from instructors who made comments and suggestions.

Some Corrections

The review by Someone's Mom appears to contain some factual errors. The banner feature is discussed on pages 75 - 76. Creating a learning unit is discussed on pages 98 - 100. Whether these entries would satisfy the previous reviewer is another matter, but the topics are addressed. There may be other errors as well in that review, but these two just jumped out at me. I agree that the authors couldn't seem to decide whether they wanted to write a technical book about Blackboard or a book focused on pedagogy and the use Blackboard. Nevertheless, there is useful content in this book, particularly for someone who is new to the use of course management systems.

Really Great!

This book came in the summer of 2012 before my classes (I ordered it early). It was a paperback so the cover would not stay completely closed but that was expected (since it IS paperback). The inside of the book was NEW, no other way to look at it, it was in excellent condition.

I'm finishing up my class & haven't come across ANY problems! This was a great buy and the product was true to how it was described! I was even given a personalized message in my shipping invoice. (:

One stop review and reference for the photonics engineer

Just got my copy and wish I had ordered it much earlier! I find it to be much more useful than the Handbook of Optics. It's very refreshing to find a book which has not been dumbed down so far as to be useless, yet not so mathematical as to be a stumbling block. This is one of the standard textbooks for undergraduate Photonics at Stanford.

Great as reference, only OK as a textbook

Photonics is the control, manipulation, transfer and storage of information using photons, the fundamental particles of light, and is also known as optoelectronics. As a reference, this book touches on every phase of photonics and is unsupplanted in its field even 14 years after it is published. It covers optics, lasers, semiconductor photon sources, electro-optics, and even acousto-optics in an accessible style with plenty of diagrams. There are plenty of equations explaining the theory throughout. This would be a great book if it were not for one thing- the total lack of worked examples or exercises. For engineers who like to learn by a combination of reading and doing, this leaves the reader completely unsure of his/her comprehension of the material. I have several suggestions for engineers who want to use this book to aid them in understanding photonics:
1. First and foremost try to get your hands on the solutions manual (ISBN 0471311138). This way you can work the examples and know if you are on the right track.
2. Get a copy of Schaum's Outline of Optics by Hecht to work through the early material on optics. This book almost stands alone as a study guide on optics and has many worked problems that the photonics book lacks.
3. Read over "Optoelectronics, Fiber Optics, and Laser Cookbook". I know it may look somewhat hokie and hobbyist in quality, but it has implementations of real optoelectronic circuits that work.
4. Finally, get a copy of an old book "Electro-optics" by Pinson. It is not as nearly as comprehensive as Photonics, but it does have some good worked out examples and explains the basics very well.
P.S.- After 15 years a second edition is scheduled for release in October 2006 (ISBN 0471784761) by the same publisher as the first edition. It will be 200 pages longer and feature two new chapters to cover the advances in the field of photonics: Photonic-Crystal Optics and Ultrafast Optics. All the chapters have been updated and many new sections have been added including Laguerre-Gaugassian beams, Sellemeier-equation analysis, photonic-crystal waveguides, holey and photonic-crystal fibers, microsphere resonators, optical coherence tomography, photon orbital angular momentum, Bohr theory, Raman amplifiers, low-noise avalanche photodiodes, tuning curves, and dispersion management. So, if you can wait on purchasing this book you might want to do so since it is so expensive, and you wouldn't want to be stuck with an expensive book that is not the latest edition!

Amnon Yariv, undoubtedly is one of the leaders in this research field as a Professor of Physics and Electrical Engineering, but his books simply suck, they look like they are written after a tea in an evening, having gathered together some articles and then cut-paste in an emergency situation. Saleh and Teich on the other hand starts from the very basics, geometrical optics, and their unique view takes the reader all the way down to fiber optics. This is one of the best books of course. As to its nature as a dictionary more than a textbook, I think this is true in a sense, but this is modern optoelectronics, what do you expect? One has to follow the references too, then it is a complete resource. For those who find this book incomprehensible, I would suggest them to take look at Born & Wolf, that is the definition of "Incomprehensible" in optics. As an undergraduate or an early graduate text book, Saleh & Teich is simply the best. Well, still, I would recommend to take an opportunity to read Yariv`s books too, after all he is one of the best in research, though not in presentation ofthe material.

Good Stuff

When I saw the title I thought this book was going to be full of slick get rich quick kind of nonsense. But it really wasn't at all. The advice is very conservative and solid... As someone "just starting out" this seems like great information to have. Maybe some people want the book to give them a secret easy way to make tons of money on the internet or something, but in the long run I think what's in this book will prove to be more valuable.

How I wish I had this book starting out!

What makes this book special is its brilliant niche: it performs a true service for anyone starting out... or even starting over. We get so little training in economics--if we get any at all. Plus, when we're young, we tend to think we have all the time in the world, and fail to take the long view. I know I did. This book addresses these educational defects.

In addition to the sound practical advice, Masterson's philosophy puts a new spin on "win-win".

Great book even if your not "just starting out"

I've been in the working world for a while now, so buying this book for myself never crossed my mind. But after purchasing it as a gift for a family member, I was so impressed with what I read (I skimmed through the chapters to see what it was all about) that I bought a copy for myself! This book is filled with tons of great information and real-life examples from the author's past experiences. I highly recommend this book to people not only just starting out, but anyone looking to improve their financial future.

About the Author
Rob Carter is Professor of Typography and Graphic Design at Virginia Commonwealth University, and has served as a visiting professor at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. He has received numerous awards for his work from organizations such as the American Institute of Graphic Arts, New York Type Directors Club, New York Art Directors Club, Society of Typographic Arts, Creativity, and Print regional annual. He is the author of American Typography Today, the five-volume Working with Type series, and Digital Color and Type. He is also the co-author, with Philip B. Meggs, of Typographic Specimens: The Great Typefaces.

Ben Day is Professor Emeritus at Virginia Commonwealth University. He has also taught at Boston University and been a Visiting Designer at the University of Connecticut. His many exhibitions include the American Institute of Graphic Arts, the New York Type Directors Club, and the New York Sculpture Centre. The Boston Society of Printers awarded him a teaching fellowship. He has served as a consultant to Bostonia magazine, NASA, and the Fogg Museum, and art directed Handel and Haydn magazine. He has been selected for Who's Who Among America's Teachers.

The late Philip Meggs was a designer, educator, and author. He was School of the Arts Research Professor, Communication Arts and Design Department, at Virginia Commonwealth University; visiting faculty at Syracuse University and the National College of Art and Design in Dublin, Ireland; and contributing editor to Print magazine. He authored more than a dozen books and 150 articles and papers on design and typography, including a section on graphic design in Encyclopedia Britannica. He was inducted into the Art Directors Hall of Fame and received its Educator's Award for lifetime achievement and significantly shaping the future of the fields of graphic design education and writing. He was posthumously awarded the AIGA Medal for design leadership.

4th Edition, Updated for digital font coverage and more

Among the things that Gutenberg invented was the whole idea of type. Since then however, there have been literally thousands of type designs developed. Some have been developed for greater readability, some came about so that a greater density of words could be put on a page, some were designed for a logo that would be unique and recognizable around the world. Today the typography world in in a state of flux greater than ever before as new digital fonts are being designed.

This book is the bestselling book in the field and discusses virtually everything there is to know about type, its uses, the effect that different styles have on the mind, the characteristic of new electronic fonts, screen fonts, laser printer fonts and much more. It is a highly graphic book using pictures to clearly illustrate what creative use of fonts can do to a book, an ad, or a web site.

Studied under the author

I am taking a course right now with Rob Carter. So at the risk of this sounding like a biased review, please know that I'm not the kind of person who allows personal feelings to stand in the way of my opinion on what's good and bad.

Professor Carter's ability to effectively communicate is carried over to this text remarkably. Any obscure questions that I've had regarding typography and design have been answered by him personally and he nearly always pulls this text out to illustrate exactly what he means.

Point is, I'm in my third year in a design program and even the "random, not covered by other professor" topics, are covered in this text.

This is a text that designers will be going back to long after they've obtained their degree and are working in the field. It's a fantastic investment.

A great type book

I had to get this book for school and I have to say it is a great book. It is packed with content and examples. Examples are kept to a minimum instead of plastering every page with 90% examples and 10% text. The content is solid and all of the examples have their place. If you are interested in typography don't pass the book up, it is probably one of the best I have seen.

Bill Ferguson, MCT, has been in the computer industry for over fifteen years. He was a Certified Technical Trainer with ExecuTrain for many years and now runs his own training and consulting company from Birmingham, Alabama. Bill has written many other books including Sybex's Network+ FastPass.

Brad Causey, MCT, is a technical trainer and consultant in the southeast United States. He runs a security consulting company and also develops courseware and training videos with many online training vendors.

Great review book, but know it thorougly

I just passed the 271 with an 899 and the 272 with a 916. This book was my only study resource, but I have been working with the XP OS on-the-job for four years.

The difficulty of the test comes from Microsoft's method of testing. Even though I did very well, I only had "warm fuzzies" with half of the questions as I was taking the test, because they really run your brain through the wringer. So, you must understand why all of the other choices are clearly wrong and only one is right, and this entails knowing the material thoroughly.

The only problems I had with the book are is the horrible amount of typos and strange program behavior with the practice tests, and the lack of anything other than multiple-choice questions.

Other than that, get hands-on training, read this book over and over, and be careful with the wording of questions on the actual exams.

Good OS knowledge builder but not the total readiness solution for both exams

Really I wish I could give this 2 and 1/2 stars since it really only covers one of the exams well. I found that this book covers the content in 70-272 wonderfully and most of what is included in this text was really relevant and helpful in that exam.

The same can not be said for the content covered for 70-271. I found that a lot of what was in the exam was not mentioned in the book, specifically security template inf files (which there were a few questions). The book focuses a lot on the knowledge of the boot process and I can say I don't remember seeing one question about troubleshooting that in the exam. I understand that all questions may not be the same for every session but I remember thinking when the exam was completed that I studied a lot of stuff that I saw no questions on. On the other hand a lot of stuff I knew through my experience with the OS and not from what I read in the book. The opposite was true for 70-271 which as I said before, the covered content was pretty relevant.

Overall I am not sure I would recommend this book to someone who is looking for an "all-encompassing" testing tool. It provides good working knowledge of WinXP but I think a little more material relevant to exam 70-271 should be covered. I think on future exams I will stick to MS published material instead.

Pretty OK

I used only this book and plenty of hands on experience to pass the test (271:880, 272:918).
The 271 coverage is iffy. As other reviews have said the book covers a lot about the boot sequence which wasn't on the test for me at all. It is missing coverage of security templates .inf s completely but that is probably a page's worth of material, you can google it.
The 272 coverage is complete and very much what the test questions covered.

I gave it 4 stars because it is concise, a feature that many other MCDST books lack.

The practice exams on the CD are slightly easier or about the same than the actual test albeit is worded very differently.

If you already have some experience in the field, and don't want to spend too much time then this book is great. Otherwise look for something more detailed.
