About the Author

Paul Zeitz studied history at Harvard and received a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley. He currently is an associate professor at the University of San Francisco. He won the USA Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO) and was a member of the first American team to participate in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in 1974. Since 1985, he has composed and edited problems for several national math contests, including the USAMO and helped train several American IMO teams, most notably the 1994 "Dream Team" which, for the first time in history, achieved a perfect score. In 2003, he received the Deborah Tepper Haimo award, a national teaching award for college and university math, given by the Math Association of America.

Not ideal for self study

A primary group of people this book is aimed at is those preparing for Math contests such as the Olympiads. Many such people study the subject on their own. An important step in such preparation is solving a lot of problems. While it is important to try to solve the problems on one's own, it is equally important to be able to verify that one's solutions are correct. Unfortunately, this book does not provide solutions to the problems. Hence, it is not very helpful for those who are studying on their own. There are many other books in the market which are better from that point of view: For example, many books by Titu Andreescu, "Problem Solving Strategies" book by Arthur Engel are all good books that provide solutions as well. The "Art of Problem Solving" (Vol. 1 & Vol. 2) by Rusczyk et al. are also very good and have separate solution manuals available for purchase.

Great 2nd edition; Would have liked more solved problems...

I recently got the 2nd edition and it seems to have some additional material compared to the first edition. There is a new chapter on Geometry and with expanded treatment of calculus. Seems like there are a few more problems in each chapter.

This is a must have book for those interested in competetive mathematics. The presentation is very good -- but since the material covered is rather complex, its not easy to do self-study with this book. The book doesn't have a solution manual -- I tried contacting the publisher to get access to their instructor site but was turned down saying that I needed to be an instructor using this as a textbook in class and so on to get access to the solutions manual. It kind of sucks when you are doing self-study to not have a way to get help. I wish Wiley will reconsider this and give folks like me who are engaged in self-study a chance to use this book effectively. It is some consolation that the books web site has a "students" section providing hints for some problems.

Overall, I would still give the book a 5 star rating because it is a class apart and covers a whole lot of ground. The first few chapters on strategies and tactics to solve problems are by themselves worth the price of the book. Definitely worth getting.

Opens your mind

I have to admit i am not through reading this book but this book is what was and still is missing in my education :-)

Why?

Well, in my opinion the author understands why many people fear math - lack of proper method(s) + lack of confidence. And the author goes about tackling this problem by doing exactly that!

This book provides many "problems" - i love the way the author phrased the word "problem" - plus many words of encouragement to push its readers to attempt the problems to 3 goals:

1) Have the courage to think out-of-the-box when it comes to solving problems;
2) Have the confidence to tackle them;
2.1) Building this confidence by providing the methods + the reader's willingness to get "dirty"
3) Never give up (Take a rest if you must, but never ever give up).

Phishing attacks, or the practice of deceiving people into revealing sensitive data on a computer system, continue to mount. Here is the information you need to understand how phishing works, how to detect it, and how to prevent it.

Phishing and Countermeasures begins with a technical introduction to the problem, setting forth the tools and techniques that phishers use, along with current security technology and countermeasures that are used to thwart them. Readers are not only introduced to current techniques of phishing, but also to emerging and future threats and the countermeasures that will be needed to stop them. The potential and limitations of all countermeasures presented in the text are explored in detail. About the Author
MARKUS JAKOBSSON, PhD, is Associate Professor in the School of Informatics at Indiana University, where he is also Associate Director of the Center for Applied Cybersecurity Research. Dr. Jakobsson is the former editor of RSA CryptoBytes. He is a noted authority on the subject of phishing and is regularly invited to speak on the topic at conferences and workshops.

STEVEN MYERS, PhD, is Assistant Professor in the School of Informatics at Indiana University and a member of the University's Center for Applied Cybersecurity Research. Dr. Myers worked on secure email anti-phishing technology at Echoworx Corporation, and has written several papers on cryptography, distributed systems, and probabilistic combinatorics.

suboptimal countermeasures

Phishing is a dangerous phenomenon. But only in recent years has it become common. Another way of seeing this is to note that this book is only the third devoted to phishing. The first two were published in 2005. (Whereas generic spam was already sufficiently a problem in 1998 that a book appeared then, with some primitive antispam methods.) Jakobsson and Myers have assembled a formidable set of articles that define phishing, its dangers and countermeasures. The text explains why phishing stands separate from spam. In part because it is always fraudulant, whereas some spam actually offers real goods and services.

Concerning dangers, Jakobsson and others describe experiments where they sent simulated phishing messages to university students. Response rates were disturbingly high. This from an educated group! The book also cites other studies which reveal that phishing messages and their websites can be very professionally done, and can sometimes fool even experts.

However, the countermeasures described in the book have severe disadvantages, some of which, though not all, are described in the text.

Consider making a blacklist of known phishing sites. This might be done at some central website. With a browser toolbar distributed to users, so that when a user goes to some URL, the toolbar checks the domain against the blacklist, which it gets from the central site. But phishing tests the very concept of a blacklist to destruction. Phishers can subvert many computers, scattered across the Internet, to act as fake websites. So identifying one of these as a phishing site has little efficacy.

Plus a blacklist is inherently reactive. How is a website classified as phishing? Often, if not invariably, by manual scrutiny. But after the phisher has turned on the site, and sent out messages linking to it. This allows a zero day attack.

Yet another problem is the lack of good net coverage, to identify (even if only tardily) many phishing sites. Chapter 14, on social networks, describes improving coverage with a social network, using the Net Trust toolbar. However, the social networks cited tend to be small, reducing coverage. The toolbar tries to improve on this with supplemental blacklists from some central sites. The problem remains. In general, you need many in a social network for good coverage. But this gives rise to some users accidentally or deliberately misclassifying websites as phishing or not. Where the accidentals might be due to subjective assessments of websites, and the deliberates to phishers infiltrating the social network.

Another method uses a two factor device ("fob") to generate one time passwords (OTPs). Typically issued by a bank to its customers. Costly. One American bank pays about $50 per fob, and passes some of this onto its customers who want the fob. It takes a loss on each fob, and thus cannot mandate that all its customers use them. Chances are that other banks (including non-US ones) have similar experiences. Also, the book does not discuss the scaling problems with a fob. Suppose you have several bank accounts, plus a brokerage account, and a retirement account, and one with an insurance company. And suppose you use a big online auction site, and that all these issue fobs. Really cumbersome. Especially if you will access those accounts when travelling.

Another method for identifying phishing messages uses Bayesians and similar content analysis on the message text. This idea is taken from tackling generic spam. But Bayesians work best when there is a clear content separation between spam and non-spam. Phishing messages hew closely in their word choices to actual messages or web pages of the real sites.

Another approach for messages is to look at the enclosed links. Various heuristics are used. Does the link have a raw address? What country is the website in? Etc. Also, the web page that is linked to might be analysed for other heuristics. Subjective and weak. None by itself is conclusive. So typically, the number of heuristics in a message is toted up to improve the prediction, and if it is above some threshold, then the message is (perhaps) phishing.

Yet another approach uses image passwords, to help you recognise the real bank's website. But while an image may be easier to remember than text, it is still another item to remember. One that scales with the number of websites that use this method, and that you have accounts at.

But there is another type of phishing, which is not described but can be expected. Where the message does NOT claim to be from your bank. It purports to be from another bank, asking you to open an account. With a link to a page where you enter all the necessary details about yourself. Another variant is an application for a credit card, from a supposed bank. Sidesteps any fob or passwords (text or images) you have at your banks.

What is lacking is a solution with these properties:

1. Objective. No subjective heuristics.

2. Lightweight. No heavy cryptography. Deployable globally, with no import/export restrictions.

3. No special hardware.

4. Very little (or no) manual effort by the user.

5. No extra user passwords.

6. No zero day attack.

7. Analyses messages and websites in essentially the same way. Some methods in the book work only against websites, and not against messages read in a browser. But if the user clicks on a link in a message, that goes to a phishing site, then she is already at risk, even if another method suggests that the site could be phishing.

8. Objectively classify a message from a company that you do not have an account at.

9. Enables verified advertising. So a company can send out messages, with links to co-marketing partners.

The last reason is very important. We have seen on the Web how an advertising channel can be a significant business and produce a large market cap.

Such a solution exists. Outside the ken of the book's methods, and conceptually discontinuous.

The best extensive resource for researchers

Phishing and Countermeasures is the best (and only!) extensive resource on phishing for researchers that I'm aware of. The book not only applies to technical security researchers, but also to those interested in researching phishing from other vantages -- such as the social, legal, or policy-oriented implications. Also, the book does an excellent job of considering more cutting-edge trends, such as the impact of additional social context in phishing attacks. This book absolutely belongs on the desk of anyone with serious interests in both understanding and combating phishing.

At last, all in one place!

"Phishing and Countermeasures" (P&C) does an excellent job of summing-up the state of Phishing attacks and research. It describes--in depth--technical attacks and countermeasures to the attacks, presenting both points of view in an extremely complex problem.

Phishing is not a simple technical or social exploit, it is a process. P&C breaks the process down into little bits, describing in depth how each portion accomplishes its goals. They show technical and social techniques used by Phishers, and then delve into theoretical extensions of phishing attacks, including context-aware attacks (spear phishing) and other advanced data gathering techniques (browser history snooping, accoustic keyboard monitoring, etc). They make it obvious to a reader that Phishing is not a simple problem, and also that it is not yet fully understood.

The sheer volume of countermeasures, coupled with the fact that I get new phishing emails daily, simply backs up the book's claim on Phishing's complexity. There is no one technical solution to Phishing attacks, there are LOTS of them, and this book provides an encyclopedic view of the myriad technical countermeasures, complete with analysis of what the countermeasures can and cannot accomplish.

Aside from looking at technical and human-oriented design countermeasures, P&C presents a legal and ethical look at understanding Phishing. Usually lacking from texts like this, coverage of legal and ethical issues rounds the book out nicely.

Do not read this book if you expect to learn how to completely stop Phishing attacks. Phishing is not a solved problem, so the solutions presented within are helpful measures only -- they make it harder for Phishers to succeed. The book does, however, explain some tools and techniques you can use to help significantly shrink the chance that you will be phished.

You should read this book if you are interested in the path research scientists are taking to understand and attempt to block the growing Phishing problem. As a non-technical expert, you can get immense value out of the introduction and future chapters as well the brief summaries present before each technial section or case study. This book reads well and presents a wealth of important information.

Must have!!!!

This book is a must have if you are doing Anatomy and Physiology labs! I bought this book along with the text book used in my class, and I found this is easier to understand and gives more details. I used the Laboratory Manual for Anatomy and Physiology more than I use my own textbook. This book also comes with a Cd and has a companion Website that is amazing. Good book if you want to pass your A&P labs.

Fill in the blanks...

The book is a fill in the blanks book, but for a reference or refresher, it's not very helpful. I pull it out to remind myself where this muscle is or that muscle is when I'm studying another subject and I get a diagram with a bunch of muscles and no names, and instructions that say label the diagram. The answer key is in the back of the book, but I need a book that's already labeled. It's great if you have to turn in the pages to be graded for feedback, but my lab doesn't do that. They have actual models in the lab. The book is for our reference at home, when the teacher isn't available. I've already finished A&P and wish I hadn't sold back the lab manual our school had us buy. This one was given to me by someone who didn't want it. I can see why. I don't recommend this book.

This lab manual is a great resource for information, as well as a useful lab tool. It matched up very well with Principles of Anatomy and Physiology (Tortora,Principles of Anatomy and Physiology) that we used as our class textbook. I highly recommend using these two together. The labs are fun, well-explained, and the charts are very useful.

Karl M. Fant is the founder and CEO of Theseus Research, Inc., a consulting firm specializing in the design and implementation of real-time image processing systems as well as ongoing research into the theory of computers. Mr. Fant developed the NULL Convention Logic, a fully expressive logic for designing and implementing clockless digital electronic circuits and systems. He is coinventor of Computer Generated Synthesized Imagery, which generates photo-realistic scenes in real time from libraries of photographic images. He holds twenty-eight patents.

Karl Fant's Remarkable Book

I've known the author of "Computer Science Reconsidered" for almost thirty years, so while I'll try to be objective, expect some personal bias as well as some disagreements with Karl. Traditional computer science places the sequential algorithm and Boolean logic at the heart of computer science. Karl takes a much wider view. He sees computer science as the theory of "process expression" - for instance, given the process of adding a million numbers, how is this process physically accomplished(physically expressed) and symbolically represented(symbolically expressed)? In general, this will be done most efficiently concurrently, and not necessarily by specifying an algorithm, but perhaps by using some clockless physical system that is smart enough to 'resolve' the problem in some partially specified, automatic manner. Karl's book takes clockless concurrent process to be fundamental(as it is in nature). He describes very primitive processes in a new and idiosyncratic language that may be off-putting to some readers, but in truly concurrent processes, notions like 'state' and 'register' are far too narrow and completely inappropriate, so much traditional process language must be abandoned. It seems obvious to me that Karl is on the right track - his approach seems radical until one starts to be embarrased at the primitive, unnatural state of today's computer science, where timing circuits must still be designed (yet nature doesn't do this), and all process details must still be specified (nature doesn't do this). Besides, the foundation of today's c.s. is about Turing Machines and the question, "Is a given process possible," when pragmatically c.s almost always instead asks, "How is a given process best done?" Every revolution takes place in a context. I have found that Karl's ideas intersect in bits and pieces with Carver Mead's ideas on making computers more like Fruit Fly brains (low power - millions of times more efficient than those clunky silicon things), and Judea Pearl's causality flow diagrams (where, as in Boolean Logic, equations by themselves are incomplete symbolic process expressions), the Relational Quantum Mechanics of Carlo Rovelli (where there are no objective, universal system states), and my recent work on human psycology and religion, where moral rule following (like an algorithm) is treated as an immature, autistic form of ethical behavior, compared to the spontaneous ethical behavior of famous religious figures. Karl's book is a new foundation. Don't expect to read a handbook with complete hardware and software languages spelled out. Those are being worked on, or in his previous book. Read Karl's new book like you're reading a mix of Copernicus and Tesla - lots of wild new ideas, ocassionally stunning insights and many sparks!

Webster’s New World Telecom Dictionary is an excellent piece of work. A handful of other telecom dictionaries and encyclopedias are currently in print, by far the most popular of which is Newton’s Telecom Dictionary. Because Newton’s dominates the market and has done so for many years, any telecom dictionary or encyclopedia is inevitably compared to that work. Webster’s New World Telecom Dictionary is no exception, particularly because Ray Horak was the contributing editor to Newton’s from the 12th through the 22nd editions.
Although Webster’s defines only 4,600 terms in comparison to Newton’s highly dubious claim of some 24,500 terms, Webster’s definitions are much better researched, much more precise, and much more efficiently worded (that is, there is much less “fluff”). Even if Webster’s almost certainly will gain in bulk as future editions expand the coverage of the telecom domain, it contains all of the essential telecom and IT terms, and defines them clearly and concisely. Webster’s includes many humorous definitions but, unlike Newton’s, they are all relevant and meaningful. Newton’s, on the other hand, is so full of personal observations and anecdotes, irrelevant humor (?), and inaccurate definitions as to make you wonder why bother to make the comparison at all.
Webster’s New World Telecom Dictionary is an excellent piece of work. Ray Horak and his technical editor, Bill Flanagan, have collaborated to create a well-written, authoritative work that clearly sets a new standard for telecom dictionaries. Many folks who entered the telecom trade during the 1980s and the go-go years of the 1990s came to rely on Newton’s Telecom Dictionary, from long-time BCR columnist Harry Newton, as their guide to the wild and wooly world of telecom.
Unfortunately, those of us in the trade didn’t think very highly of Harry’s contribution. While it did not lack for wit, Newton’s Dictionary was woefully short on quality information. In fact, one of the ways the veterans identified the rookies was by the latter’s dependence on what we looked at as a rather lame source.
For those who are entering the field today (and even for those who have been around for a while) there is a new dictionary that is worth the investment. Ray Horak, President of The Context Corporation, has written the Webster’s New World Telecom Dictionary, and it’s a gem. It’s 559 pages of well-written, insightful information on everything from "A" (for Ampere) to "Zero-Water Peak Fiber", not to mention symbols like Octothorpe (i.e. the "#" sign) and all those terms we have that begin with numbers starting like "0B + D".
Mr. Horak’s book is thoroughly researched, and contains an unfathomable wealth of detail. I have taught data networking for over 25-years and pride myself on precision- this book is precise. Where you might think you know the definition of that term, here you’ll find that definition expressed with absolute precision and find three other definitions you weren’t even aware of.
Ours is a challenging field, and good sources of information are few and far between. The Webster’s New World Telecom Dictionary is a source you can count on. What’s remarkable about this work is it defines over 4,600 telecom terms and, scanning through it, it appears there are more TLAs (three-letter acronyms) involved than the mind can comfortably encompass. I’ve found the dictionary incredibly useful when researching, and every now and then I find an interesting snippet of trivia (did you know Bob Metcalfe’s middle name is "Melancton"?) Books about telecom subjects generally fall into one of two categories: Very Basic or Incomprehensible. For the vast majority of us that fall between these two extremes, there is a new dictionary of telecom terms that is neither too technical, nor condescending.
The standard text, and one of the most widely read books in telecom, has been Newton’s Telecom Dictionary, now in its 23rd edition. But, the man who edited Newton’s for much of its history, has now published his own version of a telecom dictionary. Webster’s New World Telecom Dictionary (Wiley, 2008, ISBN 978-0-471-77457-0) is written by Ray Horak.
A dictionary is one of the most difficult books to write. Just coming up with a comprehensive list of terms is onerous enough in itself. But, to define each of these terms in a way that is understandable by the unwashed masses, is mind boggling.
Horak has done an admirable job, and created a work that can be used where Newton’s can cause problems. For example, in the expert witness work I sometimes perform, Newton’s funny or flippant definitions can be used to impugn the credibility of the source itself. You will not have this problem with Webster’s; it is a work that will never cause you a red face if you use it in a hostile environment.
In all, I will continue to keep both on my bookshelf, and value them both, cognizant of the differences. (Reviewed by Gene Retske, The Prepaid Press, April 2008)

I found a lot to like about Webster's New World Telecom Dictionary. First, it is indeed very easy to read, and contains a lot of detail, as well as good cross referencing in the entries where needed. Second, it provides good illustrations and diagrams that get the point across. Finally, while touted as a dictionary, it feels more like an encyclopedia in that it does not have that dry dictionary form—but rather a more inviting feel that makes you want to come explore. adequate

Although this book does not have all of the terms I needed information for, I did find that it does have most of the terms used in telephony. The definitions are clear and concise. If you need a dictionary on telephony, do not need information on little details and do not have the money to aford the other, this book will get you by. If however, you need information on little details such as switchtails, then this book will not do.

Good as far as it goes

Webster's World Telecom Dictionary is very good as far as it goes, but it does not go far enough to earn a 5-star rating. Its definitions are well written. They are written in the same agreeable style as the definitions in Newton's Telecom Dictionary, which comes as no surprise since the author of Webster's New World Telecom Dictionary previously worked on multiple editions of Newton's. Webster's New World Telecom Dictionary also resembles Newton's in its having some humorous definitions tucked in here and there. Typographically, Webster's is beautiful. It's much more professional-looking and easier on the eyes than Newton's. Its definitions also tend to be clearer and more succinct than Newton's. In some cases they also are more accurate than Newton's, which sometimes are partially or wholly incorrect. Webster's also seems to be typo-free, which cannot be said of Newton's, which is riddled with spelling errors. The big drawback with Webster's New World Telecom Dictionary is that it has fewer than one-fifth the definitions that are in Newton's Telecom Dictionary. If you need to look up a telecom or networking term, you will have a much better chance of finding it in Newton's than Webster's. If you decide to buy Webster's, pick up the latest edition of Newton's too so that you can turn to it to find definitions that are not in Webster's.

A Better Source than the Internet!

Webster's New World Telecom Dictionary by Ray Horak is a comprehensive telecommunications dictionary of more than 4,600 terms essential to a clear understanding of voice, data, video, and multimedia communications system and network topologies, technologies, applications, and regulations. The book encompasses numerous volumes of materials in the area of telecommunications that can be only compared with information from the Internet.

Horak's background and experience allowed him to be an expert in many telecommunications areas. The book is the witness to this fact: it covers such simple technologies as twisted pair, such complex techniques as Passive Optical Networks, Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing; and such evolving technologies as WiMAX and MIMO.

It is interesting to note that Horak presents dry facts of telecommunications reality with humor and historical references, making it easy to read and more attractive to readers. The book can amaze a reader by its thoroughness to cover various topics, provide references, describe symbols; and it reveals Horak's deep knowledge of the topics and ability to work with huge amount of sources. For an encyclopedic treatment of the subject and a perfect companion to this work, see Horak's Telecommunications and Data Communications Handbook, also published by Wiley in 2007.

Horak is an independent telecom consultant. He is active in litigation support as a consulting expert and testifying expert, often in cases involving intellectual property such as patent, copyright, and trademark and service infringement. He has authored five telecom books and written of hundreds of technical articles, white papers, case studies, and solution briefs.
