MUST HAVE

I'm getting a Masters in Education and read this book for my multiculture ed class. It is incredible. Good sources and very through. It will make you critic and re-evalute your prejudices. I think it is a must have for educators to read. As a teacher one must constantly be reading new books/articles on their content and their learners. I think this book is more geared towards secondary education, than elementry. It is easy to read and very insightful.

Good book discussing some basic issues facing teachers in multicultural settings (or any setting for that matter).

If you are already familiar with the topics covered then it'll be a refresher. If you are oblivious to some of these ideas then this will be a good book for you.

This was a required book in my course but I bought the 5th edition as it is nearly identical, they added and removed a nonessential, testing insert for the 6th edition. I saved a lot of money by going with the previous edition which is important for many students.

Insightful Postulational Approach to Thermodynamics

Why did I buy an older thermodynamics text, one first published in 1960? I trusted the advice of earlier reviewers.

They say: 1) The best treatment of classical thermodynamics that I have seen. The chapters on phase transitions are excellent and the mechanical model used to illustrate critical phenomena is brilliant. 2) It is far better than most books on the subject. 3) I think this book has no competition as a text in thermodynamics. It is the ideal preparation for a book like Landau's Statistical Physics. 4) The overview of the fundamentals of thermodynamics is without rival. 5) I think this book is a great option if you feel disappointed with the standard treatment of thermodynamics.

A few reviewers argued that Callen's text was less suitable for engineering students (too few heat-mechanical energy conversion problems) and chemical engineers (too few chemical mixture problems).

My trust was not misplaced. Thermodynamics, an Introduction to the Physical Theories of Equilibrium Thermostatics and Irreversible Thermodynamics, is an exceptional text. I give it five stars.

H. B. Callen offers a fascinating and insightful postulational approach to thermodynamics rather than the conventional inductive approach. He targets first year graduate students and advanced undergraduates. Based on my experience any reader reasonably proficient with thermodynamics should find Callen's approach quite stimulating.

The text has three primary sections: General Principles of Classical Thermodynamics (200 pages), Representative Applications (65 pages), and Fluctuations and Irreversible Thermodynamics (50 pages). A 50-page appendix offers a useful review of pertinent mathematics and other relevant topics. Answers are not provided to the chapter problems.

Interspersed throughout are brief chapters that review useful mathematical techniques. I appreciated the discussions of the Euler equation, the Legendre transformations, the extremum principle in the Legendre transformed representations, and the Maxwell relations (not the Maxwell EM equations). Callen provides useful tools like a thermodynamic mnemonic diagram (first introduced by Max Born) and associated procedures for reducing the formal manipulation of partial derivates to "a simple recipe".

Callen's text has been widely used. I reviewed the 1960 first edition, eighteenth printing. A second edition published in 1984 is easier to find and is often used today as a supplementary text.

Beautiful treatment of classical thermodynamics

leaving aside the stat mech part, the book is just perfect. The presentation of the subject is not the traditional one (like, for example, Fermi's thermodynamics); it begins with the fundamental equation (Entropy versus the rest of the extensive variables) and all the postulates, and then goes on thru all thermodynamics. I found this approach much clearer, and more fun. From the first moment you are aware that with just one state equation (an equation between the intensive variables), you do not know the system completely. The thermodynamic potentials are introduced using in an explicit way the idea of the Legendre transform (but the math involved is very simple) and so the essence of the therm. potentials can be readily understood. I think this book is a great option if you feel disappointed with the standard treatment of thermodynamics, which to me is quite boring and clumsy.

The best treatment of classical thermodynamics I've seen.

This books stands out in a subject where good books are hard to come by. The phenomenological basis of classical thermodynamics is very clearly explained in the opening chapters without any reference to statistical thermo. I found this very appealing since I'd always wanted to see some text that presented thermodynamics as it was originally developed: a complete theory in its own right, not dependent on statistical physics. The chapters on phase transitions are excellent and the mechanical model used to illustrate critical phenomena is brilliant. The last part on statistical physics is well worth reading though there may be other better texts for this. However, this book is NOT suitable for a course in engineering thermodynamics; there isn't much by way of heat-mechanical energy conversion problems for mechanical engineers, nor chemical mixture calculations relevant to chemical engineers.

This book provides a comprehensive review of topics dealing with software testing and quality assurance. The writing style is plain but efficient, while the content covers theoretical (to some extent) and practical concepts in this field. Naik (Univ. of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada) and Tripathy (NEC Laboratories America Inc.) seem to have limited exposure to current research in software testing, but they adequately cover the fundamentals. The literature review sections are useful for researchers who wish to expand their knowledge on a specific topic, with references well placed at the end of individual chapters. The rather basic exercises are not really helpful for instructors. The work would benefit by a few more supportive examples, although the ones present are well designed to illustrate the theory, where available. Software testing may be considered a relatively specialized computer science topic, existing in the few departments where a software-testing expert resides or in academic institutions offering a software engineering degree. However, it is nevertheless an important subject, with extended applications in industry, the concepts of which are covered adequately here. PRIYADARSHI TRIPATHY, PhD, is a Senior Manager at NEC Laboratories America, Inc., in Princeton, New Jersey, where he designs, coordinates, and conducts software testing for grid-based storage appliances. Dr. Tripathy has worked in the field of software testing and quality assurance for Nortel Networks, Cisco Systems, and Airvana, Inc. He has also contributed to numerous publications in the area of software testing.

Inconsistent

This book is very inconsistent in helping you learn. For example, chapter 10 is full of notation on finite state machines, but things are hardly explained at all. There is hardly any reasoning for why you are generating all of these various sequences. Then look at chapter 17 and you get definitions like:

Learnability: The capability of the software product to enable the user to learn its applications.

Operability: The capability of the software product to enable the user to operate and control it.

Attractiveness: The capability of the software product to be liked by the user.

How can you go from the insanely complex finite state machine stuff to telling someone what attractiveness is. And they never vary to say "the capability of the software product". The book wastes time writing that out where it could be using that time to explain the concepts that are actually difficult. It definitely seems the book was written by two different people.

A comprehensive book, up-to-date

I borrowed this book from library and have read a lot of it. I am a system/SW engineer with more than 10 year experience in every phases of SW engineering. Although now I am focusing on the areas of SW PM, I found I needed know more about to how to improve the quality of SW with lower cost. I read several recommended books and found this one perhaps is the best one which fit the condition of mine.

This book is very sysmatic, not only in the way of organizing the contents, but in the perspective of writing the book, so that you can get a lot of valuable information no matter you are a programmer, tester, PM, or QA. By reading the book, you can feel the solid theory backgrounds of the authors, which add readable features not difficulties. The best practices are also illustrated, and some of them are thoroughly discussed(such as code review). The up-to-date issues are well selected and I think most of the new technology trends and methodologies are included in this book so you can save much time to read more other books.

I am surprised to see there is no comment on this book yet, so I put my view here hoping it can give some help.

I read this book to get an academic understanding of software testing and QA. This textbook was very comprehensive and helped me learn the vocabulary and concepts of testing. I really enjoyed the first chapter which provided a broad overview of testing. I know I will be returning to this book as my career progresses.

Excellent sourcebook

This book has been very useful to me. I have a small mine of my own and have used it extensively. I had a hard time locating a good book on the subject...I went through the University of Arizona library. It's a bit expensive, but if you use it, it's worth it.

An excellent all round book. I deal for those students in their final year of Bachelor's degree or studying for thier Masters in Economic/ Engineering or Mining Geology. Good Diagrams, easy to understand on the whole and and excellent reference book.

Used Exploration Mining and Geology, first Edition by Peters

I am a geologist and had used this book as a reference in the past. I am now retired and no longer had access to it so I purchased a used copy of the first edition. The newest edition is priced at over $300 dollars. The book I received was solid, a former Library book, with some highlighting and notes written in it. However, it was more than adequate for my needs. Service from the seller and Amazon was five star. I rated this 4 because, while a good and useful book, I don't think the content of the book rates 5.
