The lost art of presentations

I have to disagree with the previous review. Perfect Pitch is a powerful call to arms to the lost art of presentation writing and, more importantly, making compelling arguments. It made me realize some bad habits I've fallen into which need correcting and the need to take back control from technology.

I think the most powerful point in the book is the need to build the two minute argument for any presentation before you fire up PowerPoint.

Re-discovering the art of engaging storytelling

Jon Steel is a rare breed of truly smart, creative thinkers. Though originally from an advertising background, The Perfect Pitch is by no means simply an "advertising book." It is a book about ideas and how to sell them, regardless of your business.

Jon believes that in business we all too often hide behind boring Powerpoint slides as it is easier to simply read from a slide than it is to step out and actually engage with your audience. He believes in finding an active insight from which to base the strategy and thinking and from there, developing an engaging and motivating story.

Essentially in a pitch situation you have a limited period of time to connect with your audience and involve them in the story you are telling. It's not about animated slides or embedded video links.

William Goldman, the scriptwriter, has a very similar premise in Adventures In the Screen Trade. He too talks about the critical importance of the pitch (in his case, pitches for movies) Goldman highlights the importance of finding the hook that captivates and motivates your audience.

Having had the pleasure of working with Jon, in fact on one of the pitches that he references in the book, it is fair to say that he practises what he preaches. The advice he gives is refreshingly free from jargon and rooted in simple common-sense that sometimes we can forget.

This book is an essential tool for anyone who is ever in pitch situations with their clients.

More than an anti-powerpoint rant

It would be easy to dismiss (or embrace) Jon Steel's book as a tirade against powerpoint. To say that at worst it's nothing more than a tirade against the poor use of a presentation tool (actual clip art died around the same time as the Queen Mother didn't it?) and that at best that it's an intelligent attack on a tool that has changed the way that we think. Both arguments miss the point. Yes turning Winston Churchill's best speech into PowerPoint is the highlight of this book but it's one point amongst many.

What this book seems to me to be about is creating the space, time and atmosphere needed to think. Whether that means taking a sledgehammer to your blackberry or your officemates to a baseball game the message remains the same - you win business when you have better ideas than other people; and you have better ideas than other people when you allow your subconscious to do some of the work.

Yes the book occasionally meandors, but then so do the best brains. Yes it draws on personal experience, yes it works its way through some seemingly unconnected thoughts, returning to connect only some of them - but then isn't that the central argument in the book. It's the curious mind that wins the day.

So whilst this isn't a bullet pointed, Donald Trump-esque WIN. AT. ALL. COSTS. BY. DOING. IT. THE. BILLIONAIRE. WAY. ! ! ! ! kind of book it is a kinder, gentler, more human, more nuanced and ultimately more insightful peek behind the curtain of big business and what it takes to get the people with the big bucks to buy your ideas.

Perfect Pitch may not be the book that thrusting young American execs may think that they need, it won't be on the shelves of any of the 'contenders' on The Apprentice - which is why so many of their ideas will be as predictable as their hairstyles.

Complex and indepth

I like this book ALOT because I like to go in depth about growing fruit and their propagation. THIS IS NOT FOR AMATEURS!!!!! I've had to read chapters several times to fully understand the content and I've been gardening my whole life. This book starts with a 24 page chapter about roots! Subsequent chapters are titled as follows: Propagation, compatibility and stock-scion interactions as related to dwarfing, apple root stock, pear, peach, cherry, almond, apricot, plum, citrus (covers sour, and sweet orange, lemon and relates species, limes and related species, mandarins and mandarin hybrids, trifoliate orange and its hybrids, and grapefruit, pummelo, and related cultivars), pecan, juglans (walnut family), vitis (grape) root stocks.

I think it is a little too complex for me to appreciate fully, but still worth it for me. If you are happy to buy rootstocks and graft your own fruit trees, this book would be a waste of money. If you want to grow your own root stock this may be for you, like I said it is very difficult to understand, unless read several times.

Twenty five years behind the curve

When it came out in the 1980s, this book provided a comprehensive summary of the state of knowledge concerning fruit rootstocks. Given that a number of these rootstocks are still used in the production of fruit trees, that knowledge is still relevant.

However where the book falls down is in its vintage. In the world of fruit trees, much has happened in the last quarter of a century. A multitude of new rootstocks have emerged, accompanied by an ever-widening spectrum of rootstock-related research. It is reasonable to expect that future fruit tree production will be based increasingly on these newer stocks, and less so on the older ones documented so thoroughly in Rom's book. I gave two stars not because I didn't like the book (it is still a mine of information) but because of what is missing from it.

But there is not enough information about the operations research related issues. It is a great book but has to be updated to the new research interests of today about production planning. I would suggest to check Factory Physics.

About the Author

Domasius Nwabunma is a research specialist at 3M with expertise in polymer processing. He holds three patents, has authored numerous well-cited journal papers, and has been a speaker at various conferences. He is a senior member of the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) and a member of the American Chemical Society (ACS) and the Polymer Processing Society (PPS). He has received many awards and honors and has held many leadership positions. His most recent leadership post was as President of the Upper Midwest (S22) Section of the Society of Plastics Engineers. THEIN KYU is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Polymer Engineering at the University of Akron. He has written 180 refereed papers and book chapters, holds four patents, and coedited Liquid-Crystalline Polymer Systems, an ACS symposium book.

Good but be warned before hand...

This book is nearly identical to the sixth edition; only the values of quantities were changed around in some of the end of chapter problems. From chapters 1-8 this book did a pretty good job at teaching the material. However, I did run into quite a few snags in chapter 9 where designing PID, and PI compensators are covered. At that point the explanations get so convoluted it becomes almost impossible to get what the author is trying to tell you. Also, in chapter 8 and beyond the author pulls a low move and constantly refers to a root locus software at www.wiley/nise (or whatever it was) that Appendix H pertains to. So instead of teaching purely by hand the author just waves his hands and "uses the software to find dominant poles" with absolutely no emphasis to the methods. I and at least one other student could not get this fabled software to work, so that was a dead end. This left much of the analysis to many of the problems a complete mystery. This alone was going to make me give this a three stars, but I took a hard look and realized how much I took away from this book in spite of it, so I gave a four star rating.

Great for reading, but poor for solving

The text itself is pretty clear and provides good examples, however, when solving the problems at the end of each chapter, the author asks questions the reader will not understand. For example, it asks to draw a control system of a bathtub, but the solution for the bathtub requires a differential amplifier and float, which had not been explained leading up to the question. This turned a great book into a useless tool, because in order to begin to master the material a reader needs to be able to look at the problems and answer them based off the principles and lessons prior.

A great book for those who wish to create their own diets

This book title may be misleading, as it is not for dummies, it is for those who know little about nutrition but wish to know more It is highly informative, covering all aspects of nutrition, including vitamins, minerals, etc. that are stored in the body as well as those are not. Examples are given for foods that promote good health with plenty of references and studies that back up these claims. The digestive system is explained to give a very good and necessary knowledge of how foods are metabolized in the body. Scientific names are given, always with the layman's term or at least a thorough explanation. Plenty of websites are given for further reference. I highly recommend this book for those who wish to further their knowledge of nutrition. An excellent companion book, which is almost completely a very thorough list of food values and little else is 'Bowes And Church's Food Values of Portionz Commonly Used'.

I got this book as a wedding shower present less than 4 years ago and my copy is already bent back at the spine and dog-eared to beat the band. What this book is is a wonderful, sometimes funny and always informative guide to basic nutrition. Ms. Rinzler explains very complex ideas simply and competently in 'real people' language without pouring 'sugar' on them to make them more palatable - she explains things how they really are, which helps enormously in demystifying natural biological processes and how our body uses and then discards everything we put into it. Two years ago, I (5'6" female) made the scales groan at 171.6 american pounds. Thanks in part to this book, I now weigh a much healthier 129.8 pounds.
I definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to get a handle on their own nutrition and who want to be in charge of what goes on their plate and into their mouth!

The best book on SOX Compliancy

This comprehensive guide provides a complete methodology for achieving Sarbanes-Oxley compliancy, namely the Sarbanes-Oxley Compliant Key Enterprise Technology (SOCKET) framework. The author is one of the world's leading regulatory compliance experts and Chairperson of the SOX Institute.

In terms of getting things done (and why it needs to be done) this is an excellent book. The SOCKET framework is laid out very clearly and you will find material and PowerPoint friendly bulleted lists covering every aspect of a SOX project (or, more accurately, a process).

Compared to the Manager's Guide to Compliance, the chapters constitute a more coherent narrative with more emphasis on organisational and IT issues. Compared to The Joy of SOX, it provides a generally more detailed coverage (but it is less entertaining). To give an example, the book contains a brilliant mapping between Sections of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, business processes and affected technologies. Of course, it is not rocket science, but it is great value for money. For the IT professional, it goes beyond the presentation of the usual suspects COSO and COBIT by covering e.g. the ISO 1335 and 17799 standards.

Yet, despite the level of detail, the author manages to keep the momentum as he takes the reader through all the steps of a SOX compliance process in terms of the SOCKET framework. This implies that some important topics have been moved to the Appendices (that includes about 35 pages on COBIT 3 and 4).

One could wish for more examples and templates, but it is apparently easier said than done. (Another book from the same publisher that should provide templates, key processes, and checklists has been postponed until February 2007.) Apparently, Sanjay Anand is currently working on another book Essentials of Sarbanes-Oxley that will include "Tips and Techniques" and "In the Real World" features with realistic advice on compliance. At least until then, the Sarbanes-Oxley Guide is the book to buy.

After the Enron fiasco a lot of IT as well as Finance Professionals wished for better federal securities laws. Well a lot of people were not careful about what they wished. The Sarbanes-Oxely Act of 2002 has answered just that wish. The main goal of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act is to protect investors and increase their confidence in the reporting of public companies.

This book takes the reader through the purpose and components of Internal Control and how to develop an Internal Control System.

Implementing SOX can be extremely daunting and the timelines, checklists and reporting and documentation gives a solid foundation to benchmark. The author goes over all the SOX related bodies and what they do in a very concise manner, which is good to know for the IT professionals. The book explains the need to maintain, store, retain and destroy relevant business records as prescribed under the law.

The author does a lot of handholding as he takes the reader through all the steps of the SOX compliance process.

The intended audience for this book is non technical i.e. finance professionals as well as technical IT professionals, and in my opinion the author pretty much nails it. The heavy duty jargon is either avoided or explained clearly which makes sense to the readers as one does not have to go figure what the words are about.

The author Sanjay Anand is one of the world's leading corporate governance, risk management, and regulatory compliance experts.

If you want to buy just one book which pretty much covers a lot of SOX ground, well this is it.

I give this book 5 stars on a scale of 5, 5 being the highest. I strongly recommend this book.
