Great Book, lacks good solutions

This is a great (and iconic) book on Thermodynamics. As a student in Mechanical Engineering, I am sure that what I have learned from my Thermodynamics class (and this book, by extension) will be useful. Now, to get into the book:

1. The concepts and theory in this book are expressed in simple language that doesn't require a masters degree to understand.

2. There are many examples and are clearly solved without skipping steps, in both metric and English units. I'm not a huge fan of using English units, but this book goes through the conversion factors (the hardest part) quite clearly and keeps units on all values to make following the examples relatively pain-free.

3. There are a variety of homework problems (usually over 125 per chapter) in both metric and English units. Usually the problems come in pairs; the first problem of a pair will have metric units while the second problem uses English units. As in most texts, the problems get progressively harder, but there are so many problems, that the transition is slow. If you can't figure out, say, problem 8.91, try a problem before it. Usually this will lead you to the correct method of solving 8.91.

4. The only major flaw (and to me, it's a pretty big one), is the lack of answers in the back of the book. There are none in the back of the book, however there are *some* on the book's webpage. Unfortunately, there are only a small fraction of the answers located on the official webpage. TIP: If you look very hard on the internet, there are methods to find worked out solutions.

5. Just before each set of problems at the end of the chapter, there are tables of equations, with explanations of the situations in which to use them. This is really useful when doing the homework or studying.

6. At the end of the book, there are many, many, many tables with thermodynamic data for liquids and gasses, in both English and metric units. There are indexed at the beginning of each appendix which makes it really easy to find the table you're looking for.

Good for problem solving, not so much conceptual.

Firstly, I'll agree with other reviewers that the book has a very clear style and is very helpful learning how to do thermo calculations.
Most chapters have a few section on concepts and the rest of the chapter is examples. The examples are very clear and after reading through them I was able to do our assigned problems without any problems.

My major issue is with the book's lack of conceptual explanation. It explains concepts in a formulaic fashion. I.e. it gives a formula and explains how to use it and supplies just enough concepts to be able to use the formulas. Take for example chapter 3 where it introduces the first major/complicated concept of the relations between specific volume, T and pressure. All it does is give the graph and than analyzes the graph. Sure it explains very well the relations and how to use them, but there is almost no explanation given as to why they are the way they are.

I'll say again, if you want to be able to do the thermo analyzation and calculation this is a really great book. But, if you want understand why things are the way they are, you'll have to find another more theoretical book.

I took a course in Thermo as an undergrad, but I basically just learned how to solve the textbook problems to the point where I was able to pass the tests, but I never got a good intuitive understanding of the subject.

My major was EE so one term of Thermo was a required course but not in the mainstream of my studies, so I never needed to understand it in any greater depth.

I recently retired from my career as an EE and have been wanting to become more knowledgable about energy, since I think it is probably the toughest science/engineering issue facing society for the forseeable future.

It dawned on me at some point that if I want to be knowledgable about energy, I need to do more than just read books about energy sources, I need to have a decent grounding in those technical disciplines that energy technologies are based on. The most obvious was Thermodynamics, although I decided I should also beef up my Chemistry.

And I realized, by golly, I can learn this stuff, because of my engineering background and the fact that I'm not too old for my brain to be decomposing too badly so far.

For the moment, I am studying this book on Thermo.

I am really happy with this book. They really cover the material with a lot of rigor and give a ton of examples which really help get an intuitive understanding of what the concepts mean for practical systems.

I haven't finished the book, but am far enough along to be able to judge it. Right now I'm in the chapter on Exergy. I don't believe we ever got into that in the 1st term Thermo I took 30 years ago or so. The Exergy concept really makes a lot of sense in tying everything together and providing a comprehensive approach toward evaluating the efficiency of a particular system.

I do wonder about the notation, though. They denote exergy with an "E", which seems like it could lead to its being mixed up with energy.

Wikipedia says that Exergy is denoted by the letter "B". Not sure where that came from but it seems like a good idea to use a completely different letter for it.

Aside from some minor issues like that, this book seems outstanding to me. I gather it is the predominant textbook for thermo these days. I would say it deserves that status.

I am really looking forward to the later chapters I haven't gotten to yet on the various types of engines and turbos and whatnot.

For the material to really sink in, I know I will need to read the book a second time, but the second pass should go quite a bit faster than the first.

Solid Dictionary

I've read all the reviews here and I will aprroach mine by commenting on some of the negative remarks.
A few of the negatives were in regard to poor binding of the hardback edition. These are fair remarks, indeed my copy has worn very quickly as well. However, the softcover edition does not have this problem and it is also easier to transport around.
The other negatives seemed to be by advanced students of the Russian language. I would certainly expect a linguist to have some quibbles and also to have other books they would use and recommend (such as one reviewer's endorsement of the, indeed, outstanding Daum/Schenk Russian verb dictionary). But for most users this book will be outstanding. For American English speakers of Russian I would say it is a must.

For me best translation. Gives examples of American English usage, which is what I speak. Makes it easier to understand nuances of the Russian. I love this dictionary. I have several and don't love any of the others.

Love this dictionary. You can find a wide variety of words in it that are not found in many other English-Russian, Russian-English dictionaries. Also, the font and character spacing make it easy to read.

Helped My Career

As an online paralegal student at the Washington Online Learning Institute, (WOLI) for short, I bought this book towards the end of my certificate program. It was quite useful in putting a lot of information in perspective. I had a course in career preparation at WOLI and this book reinforced and expanded upon that information so the combination of knowledge from WOLI and this book was really powerful. This book is basic, but it is accurate and very useful for someone entering the field. I ended up with a job just two weeks after graduating and this book helped for sure. So I would recommend it. I think it is interesting that Amazon bundles this book with the Statsky paralegal book because we used the Statsky book in three courses at WOLI. So I would recommend both books, actually. This is a good book for a person who is serious about entering the paralegal field, but keep in mind you should really get certified if you want to be truly successful. The days of just learning on the job are pretty much over, especially in terms of advancement in a law firm, which is a valid point made in this book. Recommended.

Great Paralegal Reference!

This is the first "for Dummies" book that I have purchased and I must say it is great for the beginning paralegal student as well as a paralegal graduate students. This book is a great refresher! When I purchased the book I was able to recap legal research and writing courses that I had completed a couple semesters ago. I was in the process of taking business law and ethics and this book helped me to understand the basics of the two courses I was about to explore as well as refreshed my memory on past courses. I will refer back to this book as a reference. This book really does cover EVERYTHING THERE IS TO KNOW about the paralegal profession!!!

The reason I gave this a 4 star is because the legal documents on the CD are pretty basic, although they provide good information for things to include in these documents, the CD does not provide an in-depth look at the complete documents to file or send, just an idea. The CD is useful when it comes to learning more about the system and I must say this CD does have a pretty good idea of what to include in your resume and cover letter. In conclusion, the book is great but the CD should be referred to as a beginning idea of what goes into legal documents and not a template.

This is a good guide for all those in the legal profession who want to know some of the details of the profession, as well as some great insights into how law should be approached. It was quite interesting. As far as practical, I'm not sure it is the best of the "for Dummies" books, but still some useful information is in there!

It's OK but.....

I purchased this for my son who is 10 and in 4th grade. The description did say for "late elementary school". Well, more times than not, a word my son needed to look up for homework was not in this dictionary. I'd say this edition is good for kids first getting acquainted with a dictionary as it is not intimidating, the definitions are at elementary reading level, and the pictures are a nice touch. However, by the time a kid is in 4th grade, this dictionary just isn't "meaty" enough. Also, it did not come with the CD as described.

This dictionary is excellent for children. As a teacher I totally recommend it particularly for children who have difficulty reading and spelling. Colour coded, it is easy to use especially to reinforce the skill of "looking up" a word. Each word is listed in its own right....not as a derivitatve of another word with clear examples of meanings.
Our group of dyslexic children are all confident and happy when using this dictionary.

My daughter is using this dictionary constantly to learn how to spell and write, and she loves it.

My daughter is in Kindergarten and needed a dictionary to help her with the occasional homework assignment as well as to satisfy her curiosity about words. I purchased this dictionary, and I hoped she would take to it. She really enjoys using this dictionary. She likes looking at the pictures interspersed throughout the dictionary, and I appreciate that the definitions are the right length and level for the audience. This will take her through elementary school easily. Great reference book for the price!

Great Book! if......

This is a GREAT book for studying and reviewing algebra 2, but if you have not taken algebra, or if you took algebra and couldnt grasp most topics without going back to your textbooks to remember something, then you may want to get algebra for dummies to review, this book begins with a slight amount of review from algebra 1, but it will definetly not each you all of algebra 1 topics. I bought this book to study algebra 2 during the summer so I wont have to worry so much next year and ive learned alot from this book, great for dummies book I recomend it completely.

Very interesting! So my 7th grader sister has now out mathed me! I was having issues remembering how to do algebra (hey, it's been a while since I was in school - don't judge) anyway this book has been a godsend, concepts are simple to understand. gives great examples and pretty much covers basic algebra. I can now correct my sisters homework and if a problem is wrong, I am able to review it with them and show them how to do it.

A thru Z resource for control systems engineer

Everything you want to know about control system engineeringfrom basic mechanical principles to complex (advanced) multiple orderdifferential equations, PID controls, etc. I took two Dr. Palm's classes as an undergrad - (1) Control System Engineering and (2) Computer Control For Mecahanical Systems. Both courses used this textbook. I still use this book today.

I struggled through many textbooks on Control Systems Engineering until I finally found this one. The book is filled with practical examples of applied control systems theory. Each example is accompanied by straightforward explanations of how the pertinent equations are derived. I consider it one of my engineering "epiphany" books :)

I am really annoyed by the false reviews. This book does not live up to its title. It contains two Parts, first part is about self improvement and gaining confedence in yourself, the second part is very generic.

This book may have been a collection of free reports put together with a nifty title.

Hype-driven book for people who don't know much about business

One of the biggest markets for coaches these days is selling to other coaches. In other words, people who want to help people but don't have a real genuine talent for it. This is one of the more laughable books I've ever read on coaching. But given that one of the authors is featured in that awlful piece of tripe called THE SECRET, there's not much else to say except if you buy into books like these, you truly get what you pay for. If gullible, non-critical thinking people are who you want to serve, then this book is FOR YOU (cue the balloons and streamers now as this review comes to an end....)

The Successful Coach - Improve your coaching sales and increase your coaching confidence

Terri Levine, Dr. Larina Kase, and Dr. Joe Vitale combine their talents to create a truly superb book for people wanting either to get into the coaching business or who are one of the 91% of coaches earning less than $100,000 p/annum who desire to earn a full-living from their craft.

The different voices and skill sets of the 3 authors meld and blend well together in this book, combining Ms. Levine's voice as a long-term coach from the early days in the trenches of coaching when some people thought it might be just another business fad, Dr. Kase's confidence building exercises (including cognative behavior therapy techniques to excavate and alter self-sabotage), and Dr. Joe Vitale's great success as an internet marketer.

Interspersed throughout the book you will also find the voices of other coaches and experts on a given niche topic in mini-interviews which further illustrate and enliven this excellent book for coaches. You will definitely want to add this to your resource library and refer back to it quarterly for ideas in ways you can improve both as a coach and as person running your own business.

Unbelievable what Charlotte K Lowrie managed to realize with in my opinion the best book on the subject.She brings together eleven of the best widely known top photographers who share their techniques & tips with you to achieve your skills;

This wonderful illustrated book is a MUST on your bookshelf!!

The layout is fantastic,the photos beautiful and the tutorials from each of the specialist tremendous.

Camera Raw is taking back the control that photographers had in the black-and-white darkroom and "Studio Skills" brings you in the darkroom of this eleven gurus.What pleased me especially is that in 348 pages I could deal with the know-how from these artists.From Workflow and image evaluation(section 1 page 4-61)to Image processing techniques(section 2 page 66-268)to end with Add finishing touches in ps(section 3 page 276-295)all you ever wanted to achieve is explained.An overview of each photogapher-contributor(including Charlotte Lowrie)is given at the beginning of the book with his/her speciality,clients,career and the techniques they demonstrate in this book referencing the page where you can find them.Thanks to the editor's permission you can search inside the book this is a great advantage to make a decision before buying this bestseller!

A must buy for anyone that processes digital photos

Adobe Camera Raw Studio Skills is a MUST for anyone using Adobe Photoshop. Charlotte Lowrie has assembled a host of great contributers, including herself, and has compiled a vast array of knowledge. The book is written in a very logical format, and covers just about everything you want or need to know about Adobe Bridge and Adobe Camera Raw. The appendices at the back of the book include information about Adobe Bridge, Camera Raw, How do download and install plug-ins for Camera Raw, and finally, websites for variety of professional organizations that can provide additional training and information. This book really does belong on any digital photographer's reference shelf.

Camera Raw Workflow-Made Easy

Being a Raw enthusiast I have read many books and articles concerning post processing using the Adobe Camera Raw Converter.
Even though this book only uses Adobe Photoshop CS2 as the basic Raw converter there are gobs of information that will help guide you through the Camera Raw process from Raw capture to final printing. When and if you upgrade to CS3 the additions to the Raw Converter can be easily be integrated into your workflow.
This book is broken down into three major sections with chapters that provide step by step techniques by various professionals on How to use - Adobe Camera Raw. These major sections are: Workflow and Imaging Evaluation, Image Prtocessing Techniques and Add Finishing Touches in Photoshop.
The presentation used by the author is excellent and should be in my opinion,very helpful to anyone considering using the Adobe Camera Raw Converter. With that said, I highly recommend this book.
