Bittman starts with Roasted Buttered Nuts and Real Buttered Popcorn, and moves right along, section by section, from the likes of Black Bean Soup (eight different ways), to Beet and Fennel Salad, to Mussels (Portuguese-style over Pasta), to Cream Scones--and he hasn't even reached seafood, poultry, meat, or vegetables yet, let alone desserts. There's a millennial ring to the title of Bittman's massive opus of more than 1000 basic recipes and variations as the widely known food writer ("The Minimalist" is a weekly column in the New York Times) and author (Fish) contributes to the list of recently published authoritative, encyclopedic cookbooks. He concedes that most accomplished cooks will find little new here, and indeed the recipes can be as simple as how to pop corn. His voice is a comfortable one, however, so the tone is less tutorial than, say, that of the newly revised Joy of Cooking. While much of the ground covered is familiar, Bittman offers inventive fare (Kale Soup with Soy and Lime) and reclaims formerly abandoned territory?his Creamy Vinaigrette calls for heavy cream. Pastas range from Spaghetti and Meatballs to Pad Thai. Similarly, sandwiches include both old favorites and fresh combinations, e.g., Curried Pork Tenderloin Sandwich with Chutney and Arugula. Bittman's friends, he says, praise his Chicken Adobo as the best chicken dish in the world. He doesn't linger too long with beef because Americans are eating less of it; he remarks that a well-done hamburger is not worth eating. Vegetables are comprehensively addressed from Artichokes to Yuca, with attention paid to buying, storing and cooking methods well suited to each. Desserts are mostly homey, like Apple Brown Betty and Peaches with Fresh Blueberry Sauce, but there is also a Death-by-Chocolate Torte. This is the one I've been looking for!

Let me start by saying I'm a busy working mom of two. I grew up eating Hamburger Helper and hot dogs, so I didn't learn to cook until I was an adult. My dad's had triple bypass and my mom's having gastric bypass, so we're trying to learn from their mistakes and eat not entirely vegetarian, but definitely a more plant-based diet. I'm sure all this sounds familiar to a lot of people!

How to Cook Everything Vegetarian is exactly the cookbook I've been trying to find for a long time. It has the simple, everyday recipes that I sometimes need, combined with a LOT of wonderful vegetarian dishes from ordinary supermarket ingredients. How about Peanut Soup, Senegalese Style? Or Korean-Style Noodles in Cool Bean Broth (in less than 20 minutes for when the kids are whining for dinner) Mustard Cheese Fondue?

This book is written in Bittman's typical `theme and variations' style, with a basic recipe (like for waffles) and then a sidebar or list following the recipe that gives variations (like a list of things you can add to waffles for flavoring). The great thing about this is that it means you rarely have to reject a recipe because you don't have the exact ingredients, just go with a variant. The only quibble I have with it is, it's sometimes difficult to keep track of what you are supposed to sub out & sub back in when you have a crying toddler on your ankle.

A basic cookbook should also walk you through basic techniques and ingredients. I was a little surprised to see the vegetables chapter was nearly 200 pages. Then I looked through it and realized a lot of that is guidance on how to select and prep the various vegetables. It's also helpful that he includes substitution suggestions - I may be out of broccoli, but if I can make the same recipe with green beans, then I can forgo the trip to the store one more day.

Another nice thing about this cookbook is, unlike most vegetarian cookbooks I have seen, it doesn't rely heavily on unusual ingredients or meat substitutes. It seems like there has to be a happy medium between burgers & fries on one hand and stuff you've never seen before. Surely we can make a healthy diet based on basic veggies, fruit, grains, and legumes, and that's JUST what this book focuses on.

But it doesn't matter how great the book is if the recipes aren't good! So I tried a few. The Spicy Autumn Veggie Burgers (we made less spicy for the kids) were terrific with a dollop of peach chutney, although the kids preferred ketchup. I was pleased at how quickly they came together too. The Glazed Carrot Soup the kids ate without any complaint at all. And oh my the Apple "Fries"!!!!

Because I'm sure people are wondering - yes, he has another cookbook called How to Cook Everything: Vegetarian that came out several years ago. This is NOT just a remake of that slim volume. This is a completely new book. (Why his publishers wanted to do two books with titles the same except for a colon I'll never know.) There's no exact overlap with How to Cook Everything, that I saw - even for recipes like Waldorf Salad, that are essentially the same in both books, there is some slight variation and different text that shows that this was re-written, not just a cut-and-paste job.

In short, I'm very happy with it. I've cooked out of it every day since I got it and I'm sure this will be one of my `go-to' cookbooks for years to come.

Useful and fun

"How to Cook Everything" is one of the more useful cookbooks I've owned. Each type of food has a "Basics" section that includes lots of preparation tips. The recipes themselves are detailed enough for beginners, and not so esoteric that you have to make a trip to a specialty grocery store every time you want to cook something. Especially helpful are the suggestions for expanding on each dish. For example, after the basic Chicken Kebab recipe, there are four modifications, including Chicken Kebabs in Yogurt-Cumin Sauce.

I'm relearning the way I prepare even the most basic things, like sandwiches and scrambled eggs. Who would have thought scrambled eggs could be so good? And the Pan-Grilled steak has weaned me from the backyard grill forever. No other cookbook would warn you that "clouds of smoke will instantly appear; do not turn down the heat." That bit of fear that your fire alarm will go off at any second just adds spice to the whole cooking experience.

The breadth of this book is amazing. Besides having nearly every type of Western cooking you can imagine, it also has recipes from Japan, India, Thailand, and... you get the idea.

There is one drawback -- this book has no photos, just a few hand-drawn illustrations. However, the book is so big that if it did have photos, it would cost much more.

It's o.k., but the same problem I always have with Bittman
By Cookin' up a storm
I'm a vegetarian of 15 years (with a meat-eating but open minded fiance) and an avid home cook. I got this book for Christmas and have slowly been exploring it. It's an interesting book and there are a lot of recipes that I'm tempted by, but it's the same problem I have with "How to cook everything": something is always wrong with the recipe. For example, his kosher pickles: the first time I tried making them with his measurements, the pickles were inedibly salty (and I love salt!) I'm now working with about a third less salt than he recommends and it's getting better. And that's what I always find with his recipes: they give you a promising start but require some major tinkering before they are really good, and I don't usually feel up to committing to that sort of trial and error. I am a passionate fan of Debbie Madison's "Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone." As an example of the difference, this week I had a dinner party and I made her cauliflower salad with green olives and capers even though I'd never tried it before, and it was a hit. Having used her book so much, I trust her recipes to be at least decent right out of the gate. I would never serve a Bittman recipe that I hadn't made before to guests because there are pretty good odds that the initial recipe needs some changes.
That being said, I'm certainly not sorry that I have this book. It has a good section on condiments that I'm sure I'll make use of fairly often, and it's a good cookbook to have on hand if you're tinkering in the kitchen and want some perspective on your technique. It's really more of a reference book than an book of recipes, and in that it is useful. But if you want ideas for delicious, satisfying vegetarian food, get "Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone."

About the Author

Amol B. Bakshi, PhD, is a Research Assistant Professor in the Ming Hsieh Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Southern California (USC), Los Angeles. He also manages the Integrated Asset Management project at the USC-Chevron Center of Excellence for Research and Academic Training on Interactive Smart Oilfield Technologies. Dr. Bakshi's PhD research was on programming models for networked sensor systems and led to the creation of the ATaG programming model and software synthesis toolkit. His current interests include semantic Web technologies for information integration, smart oilfield technologies, model integrated computing, and sensor networks.

Viktor K. Prasanna, PhD, is Charles Lee Powell Chair in Engineering and Professor of Electrical Engineering and Professor of Computer Science at the University of Southern California (USC), Los Angeles. He is also an associate member of the Center for Applied Mathematical Sciences (CAMS) at USC, and a member of the USC-Chevron Center of Excellence for Research and Academic Training on Interactive Smart Oilfield Technologies. He has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Parallel and Distributed Computing, Proceedings of the IEEE, IEEE Transactions on VLSI Systems, and IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems. He was editor-in-chief of the IEEE Transactions on Computers and was the founding chair of the IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on Parallel Processing. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and the ACM.

This is not the book for people who merely want to enjoy a comfortable retirement, but for those whose goal is nothing less than becoming fabulously wealthy. Masterson (Automatic Wealth) derides what he calls the "pinch-save-and-wait" philosophy of contributing the maximum to one's 401(k) and depending on compound interest and time to work their magic. Such tactics, he says, can take decades to bear fruit, whereas most of his clients are baby boomers who hope to realize astonishing gains in a few short years. The first part of the book is about "super-sizing" one's income to six-figure levels in order to free up money for investing in one's own businesses, and soaking up knowledge from mentors and bosses. The rest contains numerous stories of self-made millionaires (almost all from sales and direct marketing) along with Masterson's advice: invest in businesses you understand and, more importantly, can actually control; be entrepreneurial and a risk taker; never stop networking and selling yourself; invest heavily in real estate. Masterson's aggressive, gratingly self-promotional message is oddly out of synch with Dietz's gentle, avuncular, let's-chat-on-the-porch narration. Dietz's wonderful storytelling voice is wasted on this get-rich-quick scheme.

Somewhat motivational, but also somewhat annoying

The first few chapters of this book had my mind working overtime and I was feeling inspired. That was great. Then I started reading the section of the book (i.e. almost the entire book!) where they tell stories of how people made their millions. The farther along in the book I went the more annoyed I became because almost every story related to direct marketing and copywriting. What about the rest of us! Then I read in the table of contents that there is a chapter on how an accountant made millions. Finally! I am CPA. So with eagerness I read the chapter, only to throw it down in disgust one page later when the accountant began telling how he made his millions in copywriting. Thanks a lot. I don't want to be a copywriter or be in direct marketing. That is the reason for the 3 stars. The book did have useful information on how you won't become rich by being an employee, but this isn't news to me. So I guess the only real benefit I received from the book is a little motivation and I set the intention to be worth 4 million in 7 years. I really didn't need the book for that...

Disappointing for long time Agora/Reckoning Readers

If you are a subscriber to the free newsletter then this is nothing more than a lot of repackaged/repurposed content you have likely read-over and over and over. I purchased it [like everyone else] with the "bonus" offers [which were also lackluster and rehashed unlike many others in the past]. The most impressive thing about this book is the mini publicity stunt they are creating to push it to the number one spot.

Now, for specifics....there are few to none. It begins by a general "who is Masterson", talks about how great real estate is for the long term, why you need to make $150k per year or more, how much to save once you reach that level and then relates several stories of people who did just that in one form or another.

As other reviewers have already mentioned, the information on real estate is dated at best. Sure, they make mention of the fact that they don't promote buying right now but rather to take a long term approach and keep your eyes open for those great bargains [yeah-you and hundreds of millions more].

The other less than insightful points include making yourself an invaluable employee so that your boss will give you a raise and/or bonus etc to the six figure plus category. Build your own business is the next response...again, the numbers demonstrate the vast majority of wealth comes from real estate and owning your own business. It also demonstrates that owning your own business is a risky endeavor that often results in less total earnings than a full-time job. Of course, having a network of high profit friends in a niche industry can sure help but if you aren't one of those folks then don't expect it to be as easy as it sounds.

In fact, this is really more of a motivational 'rah rah' The majority of the book relates the stories of several people who "made it" in seven years. Big deal. For my money, I STRONGLY prefer the new $1,000,000 Blueprint magazine which features several interviews each month of people from all walks of life who created a thriving small business.

Having been a long time subscriber and general fan of both the Daily Reckoning and the Agora Publishing mini empire, this is one of the few times they have Failed to deliver anything of substance and very little of interest. The $15 price tag is probably still to high even with the crummy bonus offers [more rah-rah and fluff].

Give it a few weeks, this book will be on the discount bin and thousands of copies available starting for a penny!

Hey, if I'm correct then maybe Agora should consider hiring me...an obviously invaluable prospective employee who actually knows how to deliver!

This book is one long sales letter for the author's company

I just finished reading "Seven Years to Seven Figures: The Fast-Track Plan to Becoming a Millionaire." The book's framework consists of 8 success stories from people who have reached 7 figures in 7 yeasr or less. And from the stories, you're supposed to take away lessons that will help you accomplish the same. Although it only took me 2 days to read the book, I can save you even more time. Just read the "AFTERWORD" section, which is only 5 pages, and you have everything in the book you're supposed to learn. It's a succinct summary of the whole book.

There's nothing new here, no great insight. How to become wealthy? Make a plan, work hard, and follow through. How to become wealthy quickly? Either get a high income job or start your own business AND invest in real estate. THAT, is the gist of the book right there.

Another thing that bothered me about the book is the author's constant promotion of his company and related products. The whole book is one long sales letter advertising his e-zine company and info products & programs disguised as a book. The 8 success stories are akin to the "testimonials" you see online everyday touting info products, with one of the success stories actually going into detail about a copywriting program the author's company regularly promotes. (I know this because I am a subscriber to his free e-zine.)

I agree with a previous reviewer who said that the motivation for writing this book was undertaken purely to increase the author's wealth and popularity by putting the proceeds of sales in THEIR bank accounts. This book was definitely more fluff than substance. Save your money.

Great Book

This has been one of the best books I have read in a while. Mr. Heinecke shows great insight into the methods of an entrepreneur. In addition, Mr. Heinecke's entrepreneurial endeavors have been centered in Thailand and Southeast Asia, giving the book great insight into Asian culture. After living in Thailand for 6 years as a child, it was very interesting to see the methods and organization of Mr. Heinecke's many business ventures I had grown accustomed to while in Thailand. Overall, and excellent book!

A must read book for everyone.

This is a fantastic book that is very easy and quick to read. I read it and now am buying copies for friends, children and about anyone else I think would benefit by understanding decision making rules that lead to success. It is one thing to be an "Entrepreneur" and quite another thing to be an Entrepreneur who makes good decisions that lead to business growth and profitability.
I wish I could find a source to buy this book in volume so I could get more copies at a lower cost.

great reference, now a classic

This book was first published in 1986. As Fleiss states in his preface, the intention is to fill a gap in the standard texts on experimental designs by emphasizing and illustrating those that are useful in clinical studies. This book was clearly marketed for the rapidly growing and highly regulated pharmaceutical industry. In addition to the classic experimental designs, Fleiss covers cross-over designs and repeated measure designs that are important in clinical trials. He writes clearly and deals with the important issues in clinical trials including potential biases, blinding, randomized controls, multiple comparisons and repeated measures. The book starts off with a chapter that emphasizes the effect of measurement error and also provides some simple experiments on reliability of measurements.
There is a wealth of methods included, many different designs and various parametric and nonparametric analysis techniques. It is aimed at biostatisticians in the pharmaceutical industry and the medical research field. The book is very much suited for an advanced undergraduate or graduate level course for students majoring in statistics or biostatistics. The level of mathematics is high but not excessively used. Mathematical results on sample size determination are deferred to an appendix.

The Wiley editors choose only successful books to be included in their Classics Library series. The intent of the Classics series is to take popular books by distinguished authors and create a paperback edition that may be more affordable than the hardcovered edition still in print. It is not a revision of the book. This book entered the Classics series in 1999.

It is a great reference source and I plan to consult it a great deal in the future. The only drawback to it that I see is that it is not up to date. The last 15 years has seen many advances in group sequential methods, Bayesian designs and longitudinal data analysis that this text misses. So Fleiss' book is not one stop shopping for a clinical biostatistician but it does offer a lot and presents it eloquently.

With regard to reviewer Izadi's comments on Amazon, I think the appropriate way to ask this question is really to write the author. Since it is here in print for the readers, I will attempt a reply. I think there is a misinterpretation of the terminology. When Fleiss refers to mean logarithms he is not referring to the population means on the log scale but rather the logarithm of the population mean on the original scale. With the latter interpretation equation 3.25 makes perfect sense. It is the former interpretation of the parameters that the reviewers point addresses. The importance in the example is to demonstrate the lack of robustness of t or F tests to non-normal (e.g. lognormal) data and to show that tests and confidence intervals can still be accomplished using the normal theory after the transformation. The key point is that it is the ratio of the parameters that is transformed into differences of the log of the parameters.

A must for biostatisticians

This is the standard text on this subject. Recommend you have at least a Master's degree in statistics to take full advantage of this book. This book is too technical for non-statisticians, although they may get some useful infomation from the non-statistical discussions.
