Good except for a major oversight

I like this book, it has a lot of information, and is well organized. I got it because my 8-year daughter wanted hermit crabs for Christmas, and we needed to start from scratch. As a beginner I am confident that this book will help us, and it did when we found a hermit crab leg lying on the sand. The book explained that this is common when crabs are moved to new home. So, it seems to cover all the bases. BUT... there is one glaring fault that prevents me from giving it four stars. Maintaining proper humidity in the tank is very important for the long-term survival of your pets. Why then does the book say to maintain 60-70% humidity on p. 52, to mist immediately if the humidity drops below 79% on p. 81, and that crabs need to live in a humidity range of 79 to 90% on p.88? So which is it? 60-70% or 80-90% (could it be 70-80%?) A book purporting to be an authority on pet care should have consistent advice. Both the author and editor should have caught this obvious inconsistency. I would've added the last star if it had photos of each species identified as such, so I might be able to figure out what I have.

Deyue Yan, PhD, is a professor at the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, P.R. China, and a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Dr. Yan has served on the editorial board of Macromolecular Theory and Simulations and is currently on the editorial board of the Chinese Journal of Polymer Science.

Chao Gao, PhD, is Professor in the Department of Polymer Science and Engineering at Zhejiang University, P.R. China. Dr. Gao also serves on the editorial advisory boards of the Open Macromolecules Journal and the Open Process Chemistry Journal.

In addition to advising counsel, he has provided testimony in these and other matters. Dr. Slottje is a Professor of Economics at Southern Methodist University in Dallas and is a former partner in an international consulting firm. The bible of Mineral Processing

Although this book was written in 1935, this book is still a primary referrence book for practicing mineral processing engineers. An effort was made a few years ago by the Society of Mining Engineering to replace this autoritive document (Weiss etal) but this volume by Taggart remains irreplaceable. Its certainly not a book for the casual reader but as a referrence text, it is outstanding.

Taggart's Handbook of Mineral Dressing is a must have book for anyone interested in the early methods employed for mineral recovery. It is also an excellent source book for old mining camp and ghost town seekers that may wish to delve further into the uses of some of the equipment they might find at old mills. Packed full of detailed descriptions of flowsheets and equipment, this book opens a fascinating window into the history of mineral processing. Also of use to the modern extractive metallurgist, as much of the information contained within is timeless as to its usefulness.

DOMINIC CASSERLEY is a director of McKinsey & Company, based in Hong Kong. During his 16 years as a management consultant, he has helped financial services clients around the world address their most pressing strategic, organizational, and operational challenges. He has worked in Asia since 1994, serving multinational and local commercial banks, investment banks, and insurance companies. He is the author of Facing Up to the Risks: How Financial Institutions Can Survive and Prosper, which was published in 1991 in the U.S. and subsequently in Japan, Korea and China.

GREG GIBB, a senior consultant with McKinsey & Company's Hong Kong office, has served financial institutions in Asia and the U.S. since 1992. He has worked extensively with leading family-owned, regional commercial, and global investment banks to design and execute strategies tailored in Asia.

A fine piece of work

Dull title. Boring cover. Impenetrable first paragraph. Yet this is the best book on finance in Asia since I came to the region, twelve years ago.
Its greatest strength is combining highly readable broad-brush portraits of recent events and figures (such as Philip Tose), with a McKinsey consultant's overview of the significant trends in finance in Asia - market share, industry trends, etc - a broad view, with a quantitative edge which would not typically be available to the journalist. Such a perspective is highly unusual in Asia (which isn't, anyway, well written about). Well executed, well conceived. Rather reluctantly, I have to admit that I stayed up all night to finish it. Congratulations.

About the Author
George B. Rybicki received his B.S. degree in physics from Carnegie-Mellon University and his Ph.D. in physics from Harvard University. He is a physicist at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and lecturer in the Astronomy Department at Harvard. His research interests include stellar atmospheres, stellar dynamics and radiative transfer. Alan P. Lightman received his A.B. degree in physics from Princeton University and his Ph.D. in theoretical physics from the California Institute of Technology. He was a research fellow at Cornell and then an Assistant Professor of Astronomy at Harvard University from 1976-1979. He is presently at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. His research includes work in general relativity, the astrophysics of black holes, radiation mechanisms, and stellar dynamics. He is also a coauthor of Problem Book in Relativity and Gravitation (1975).

An Almost Perfect Book for a Course on Astrophysics

One of the peculiarities of Astrophysics is that, as a
subject, is difficult to teach. It requires to go deep into
the physics of the objects under study (which span the whole
Universe) but alto to keep a broad view (the so called "Big
Picture") since most of the objects and their histories
cannot be understood if they are isolated from the others.
One of the problems a teacher faces is, hence, how to strike a
balance between these two disparate goals within the limited
time of one or two academic terms.
Rybicki and Lightman success with this book is to take the
physics of astrophysical problems involving radiation from
the general approaches of the physics books to the particular
conditions of most of the cases that astronomy cares about
without leaving rigorousity along the way. With a little
abuse of language: They bring Physics a step closer to
Astronomy.
On the other hand, the area of actual applications that
astronomers use is almost neglected. For example, the
introductory chapters on Radiative Transfer and Black
Body Radiation could have served to motivate a chapter on
theoretical basis of photometry (theoretical approach to
color indices, extinction by dust or other microscopic
particles). This would have given the student a more
realistic flavor of the tools that astrophysicists use
in their everyday (every night?) work. The Problem Sets,
in addition, are claiming for a few numerical
applications to profit from the, now easily available
to students, computer power.
Every serious astrophysics teacher and student should
use this book... and think hard on how to take the
next step from Rybicki and Lightman to the Absolute
Magnitude versus Color Index diagrams.

Dr. Sinnreich has held engineering and executive positions at MCI where he was an MCI fellow and has been involved in Internet and multimedia services for more than 12 years, including the development of the flagship MCI Advantage service based on SIP. Henry Sinnreich is also a contributor to IETF standards for Internet communications in such areas as SIP telephony devices and using RTP extensions for voice quality monitoring. He was awarded the title Pioneer for VoIP in 2000 at the VON Europe conference. Henry Sinnreich has been a cofounder and board member of the International SIP Forum based in Stockholm. He is a frequent speaker and is known as the leading evangelist, worldwide, for SIP based VoIP, presence, IM, multimedia, and integration of applications with communications. Dr. Sinnreich is also a guest lecturer at the Engineering School of the Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX.

Alan B. Johnston (St. Louis, MO) is a Consulting Member of Technical Staff at Avaya, Inc. He has coauthored the core Internet SIP standard RFC 3261 and four other SIP related RFCs. He is the co-chair of the IETF Centralized Conferencing Working Group and is on the board of directors of the International SIP Forum. His current areas of interest include peer-to-peer SIP and security. Dr. Johnston is a frequent speaker and lecturer on SIP and contributor to various publications, and is an adjunct professor at Washington University in St. Louis, MO.

An Outstanding Book on SIP

I'll keep it short and sweet. I am one of the authors of SIP and
of many of its related technologies that are discussed in
this book. As such, I am frequently asked by people how they
can quickly understand the benefits of SIP technology, why
it is important to them, and what it can enable. The answer is
simple - read the Sinnreich/Johnston book. The book helps you
understand how SIP, its extensions, and related technologies
all fit together, and why SIP is revolutionizing communications.
This is a fabulous piece of work, written by two recognized
leaders. I highly recommend it.

Must Read -- This book explains the "why" of SIP services

I've been involved in the development of the SIP specification for several years, and currently co-chair the Internet Working Groups overseeing its continued evolution. I'm closely involved with the application of SIP to next-generation mobile phone networks. Between standards work and speaking on SIP frequently at trade shows and conferences I've seen a lot of SIP books and tried to explain SIP to many people. Most of the books on SIP cover the dry technical details of the specification and implementations. This book, "Internet Communications Using SIP" goes into an entirely different realm.
Henry Sinnreich and Alan Johnston are two of the most knowledgeable authorities and notable figures in the SIP world. I expected a lot from them them. They've greatly exceeded my expectations, doing a surprisingly good job of explaining WHY the SIP protocol works the way it does, WHAT sort of advanced services it is making possible, and HOW service providers can use it to enrich their business offerings.
This book is an absolute "must read" for anyone in the industry, especially for people familiar with traditional telephony who are trying to design, market, or implement new telecom services of any kind. If you haven't read this book and Gonzalo Camarillo's new SIP book, don't argue with the old-timers on the SIP mailing lists -- they're likely to just tell you to "RTFB" . . . and this is one of the books they're referring to.

Disorganized and too shallow

This books presents SIP, the protocol for Session Initiation. It covers many aspects, including conferencing, security, Internet telephony, user preferences.

The book is not 400+ pages as Amazon indicates but just below 300. Why does this matter? Because, with 17 chapters, this gives an average of less than 20 pages per chapter. As you can guess, 20 pages are not sufficient to explain topics such as Internet telephony, or conferencing. Even the SIP protocol is not presented fully. Only the major messages are listed with a short description of their use.

I was also disappointed by the book organization. The SIP Overview chapter which explains how SIP works is chapter 5. All the preceeding chapters mention SIP before we even know what SIP is. This is most confusing unless you have already some SIP knowledge.

The book tries to cover too much. We get a whirlwind tour of many topics, none of them explained appropriately. The book opens many issues that remain unanswered. If you want a shallow overview of SIP, this book may meet your need. But you are likely to quickly need something more in-depth.
