About the Author
Mark Ryan, a graduate of Brown University and the University of Wisconsin Law School, has been teaching math since 1989. He runs the Math Center in Winnetka, Illinois (www.themathcenter.com), where he teaches high school math courses including an introduction to geometry and a workshop for parents based on a program he developed, The 10 Habits of Highly Successful Math Students. In high school, he twice scored a perfect 800 on the math portion of the SAT, and he not only knows mathematics, he has a gift for explaining it in plain English. He practiced law for four years before deciding he should do something he enjoys and use his natural talent for mathematics. Ryan is a member of the Authors Guild and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
Geometry Workbook For Dummies is Ryan’s fourth book. Everyday Math for Everyday Life was published in 2002, Calculus For Dummies (Wiley) in 2003, and Calculus Workbook For Dummies in 2005. His math books have sold over 100,000 copies.

Great primer for high school geometry.

With a full-time, private math tutoring practice, I enjoy the opportunity to help geometry students year-round. In the Summer, I help students who will be entering geometry, to get a head start on this course. The only materials I require them to use is the Geometry Workbook For Dummies, pencil, and straight edge. I like the way the author, Mark Ryan, presents the subject. Reading material is kept to a concise minimum, without sacrificing important concepts or details that students must know. This workbook has over 200 problems, with space provided for the student to work them out.
Students begin learning how to do two-column proofs in the very first chapter. Each chapter provides a nice mix of both proofs and problems for the student to solve, preceded by examples. Each problem comes with a diagram, given information, and sometimes hints. Some problems have an asterisk, which means they are more challenging than normal.
Answers and detailed solutions are provided at the end of each chapter. This is valuable study material which should not be overlooked. Some students find the cheat sheet helpful also, while they are still learning the important symbols, terms, concepts, and formulas. Unfortunately, it looks like the publisher, Wiley, has begun to phase out the cheat sheet, which was always provided at the front of each Dummies book. Instead, newer printings give you a link where the cheat sheet can be downloaded and printed from their website.
As an educator, this book allows me to cover many of the finer details of geometry, which teachers don't necessarily have the time to cover in the classroom. Consequently, these students are much better prepared, and the methodology of geometry proofs will not be a mystery to them. If students want more in-depth coverage of the topics presented, the regular Geometry For Dummies book, written by the same author, is a user-friendly resource.
