PEGGY M. JACKSON, DPA, CPCU, is a consultant and nationally recognized lecturerin risk management, business continuity planning, and Sarbanes-Oxley compliance. About the Author
Daniel Lednicer, PhD, is the author of several books on drug synthesis and discovery. His career in both the private and public sectors has been devoted to the search for new therapeutic agents. Dr. Lednicer spent two decades at the bench as a chemist at the Upjohn Company. Following that, he served as director of chemical research at Mead Johnson, director of pharmaceutical sciences at Adria Laboratories, and pharmaceutical manager at Analytical Biochemistry Laboratories. Most recently, he was a project officer at the National Cancer Institute.

Lester A. Mitscher, Ph.D., recognized for his research achievements by numerous institutions, serves as a consultant for the National Institutes of Health, among other organizations. Dr. Mitscher is a professor at the University of Kansas and the Victorian College of Pharmacy at Monash University outside Melbourne, Australia. Victoria Dolby Toews, MPH, a veteran freelance researcher and writer, has written and coauthored many books on health and wellness. She lives in the Pacific Northwest.

This book strikes a rare blend of scholarship and readability. Rheology is an challenging field, but this book presents as readable an account as has ever been published. It is worth it for the simple descriptions of the phenomena observed in non-Newtonian flows.

Great text for learning and reference

As a student in materials science, this is one of best books I have ever read in materials science. The text is kept to a minimum and is easy to read. The figures are large and easy to understand, and the equations are all well explained. Just about every topic in friction and wear is given at least a cursory glance along with listings of more focused literature. It is a classic.
Well written, never using complex derivations where limit analysis will do the job and always relevant to the everyday situations of friction, wear and lubrication, this book is a must-read for anyone working in this area.

With this book, Rabinowicz not only explained his subject well.
He has also made the subject of wear really interesting.

Great Book on Designing Electronic Circuits

The book is written for M.I.T. physicists and other scientists who need to design their own test equipment. Thus it is not a cookbook, but it is very practical and goal-oriented. It discusses many standard circuits and describes exactly how and why they work, jumping right into methods used to analyze them (KVL, KCL, Norton and Thevenin equivalences).

As an example of the clear approach to circuit analysis, it starts with circuits that use op-amps because they are easy to understand (i.e., as black boxes). (It also includes their real-world limitations and manufacturer's specifications.) Only later does it describe (and analyze) transistor circuits. Of course, many more circuits (e.g., CMOS, digital) are described (and analyzed), but the important point is it gives you the tools to analyze correctly the circuits for yourself.

If you like being able to understand precisely what is going on, and don't want to be babied, THIS IS THE BOOK.

Designed for students who have no previous background in circuit theory or electronics, this text provides a sufficiently broad and thorough exposure to practical electronics to permit the immediate application of electronic circuits and instruments to laboratory and research work. Because these applications involve increasingly sophisticated concepts in signal processing, this book includes practical introductions to network theory, linear system theory, modulation and detection, noise, guarding and shielding, and analog and digital instrumentation. Thus, this book can be used as a textbook for an introductory first course in electrical engineering, as a textbook for one-semester "Electronics for Scientists and Engineers" survey course, or as a self-study primer for the professional scientist or engineer who needs additional background in the theory and practice of electronics.

Great Travel Guide

I just came back from my first trip to Memphis and Nashville. I have to say that this book was my life source. We only had a limited amount of time to see everything on our wish list, and this book made it possible to plan the best sites, the best restaurants, where to stay, shop and everything. All of the information it gave was useful and was essential to our amazing trip. They even include fun and comprehensive walking tours. I would recommend this book to anyone going to Nash and Memphis.

2006 edition, but certainly still 99.5% on target. Arrived especially fast from this secondary seller. It always amazes me that people plan a vacation and won't spend a few bucks on a guide book for the area. Definitely worth buying.

Jason Osipa is currently directing in San Francisco at LucasArts, where he also works with sister company ILM on new ways to converge the tools and techniques of games and film. Chapter 13 worth $1,000,000 in warcraft gold

Osipa's approach to toon rigging (and rigging in general) is unique, new, innovative and very simple to grasp and implement. I don't want to give away the genius of Chapter 13, because I THINK you need to buy this book!

You want to know how they "might have" rigged Elastigirl in The Incredibles? It's so simple you'll kick yourself in the shin for not thinking of it yourself.

This whole book is filled with rigging know-how by a lover of cartoons. His primary goal is making excellent facial animation. Something this industry sorely lacks! And this is the book that documents his experiences and skills. Learn from it. Be a better rigger.

If you want to be a Rigger or Character TD for toons or even photo-real characters, these techniques will be omni-present in studios (big and small) in the next year. Get this book and read it cover to cover so I don't have to kick you in the shin.

I am a 3d professional artist for a long time, I have to say I have read hundreds of books, watched hours of training videos, read pages of internet tutorials anything related to 3d animation. No other training material comes even close to things I have learned reading this book. It is a treasure that you have to keep somewhere close to your desk as a reference, whether you are modeling a character head, building blend shapes or rigging . I have used the techniques successfully in many projects. I thank Jason Osipa for writing this book and for teaching me how to build superior 3D characters. This is my second SS book, I also have the first edition. This 2nd edition is a lot different then the first.

Also excellent for Blender users

This is a great book and I highly recommend it for anybody interested in character animation. Although the author uses Maya and a few examples describe Maya-specific functionality, most of the material in here is very broadly applicable, making this an indispensable book for Blender animators as well.

Readers of my book Introducing Character Animation with Blender should definitely check this one out.

When You're New But Your Project is Old

You're new, but one of your duties is to renovate or maintain a building that is old--perhaps one hundred or more years old. Of course you should engage professionals for the work, but where do you start and how do you evaluate what needs to be done and how well they do it? That's the position I found myself in last year. My new job here in the Midwest (I was born and bred in the Pacific Northwest, where truly old buildings are as rare as sunny days) includes custody of a 150-year-old historic home and renovation of an equally old one-room schoolhouse. While I have access to several preservation experts--many times offering conflicting opinions--I am the project manager. Since my experience has been entirely in new construction, Robert Young's book has been a lifesaver for me. This is no Preservation for Dummies--it's a truly informative volume that covers all aspects of historic preservation (process, materials, styles, systems) and offers "best practices" as well as bibliographies for further reading on each aspect. If you are new to preservation, need a refresher or just want an authoritative source for occasional reference, then buy this book.

Technology primer

Professor Young has created a comprehensive overview of the the process of preserving historic buildings, and an invaluable guide to the materials used, their decay processes and the methods used in their repair and maintenance. The bibliographies alone are worth the cost of this publication.

Best Preservation book ever

Easy to read and well composed. Robert Young is well versed and has always been champion for preserving historically important homes. He lead by example. His personal home is one of the case studies listed.
