love this book!

I have trully enjoyed using this book in my practice. It is true that the objectives dont come as specific and measurable as some would want to, but i think it is better that way because i can adjust them to be appropriate for each client. All u need is creativity. I recommend this book to those who would want to facilitate writing their CCCP's for LA County DMH paperwork. I'm sure it would be good for other types of paperwork.

Robin Vowel's book compliments Hughe's book for a variety of algorithms and none-MVS platforms (emphasizing certain PL/I facilities well).

NB.
Caution with inexpensive used copies. They may not be the latest edtion. Previous editions are more verbose.

Possible ENVironment Efficiency Problem

This is indeed an excellent text, much easier to understand than the IBM language reference manual. Years ago I taught PL/I at my workplace and used it (or an earlier edition) as a text. I even wrote Ms. Hughes a letter of appreciation. (Indeed, an earlier Hughes text helped me cross the boundary between the language reference manual and actually understanding and being able to use the language.)

There is one area where I see a problem -- the efficiency of using external storage media.

In IBM MVS systems there are three places where file attributes can be specified: On the associated "label" of an existing file; On a Job Control Language DD statement or TSO ALLOCATE statement; and in the internals of the application.

Ms. Hughes repeatedly uses file Environment statements such as ENV(F RECSIZE(80)). Since the application program has the highest degree of control, overriding both JCL and data set label, the "F" specification will almost certainly force unblocked records on disk or tape. This is grossly inefficient both in I/O speed and amount of disk storage taken for a specified number of records.

The more correct specification is ENV(FB RECSIZE(80)). This DOES NOT prevent using unblocked records since an external BLKSIZE(80) specification would have that result but it does permit the highly desirable and efficient Fixed-Blocked data format (i.e. multiple, often many records per physical block on disk or tape).

The PL/I application DOES NOT need to know what the blocksize is, as in the above case the data management access method routines will present successive 80-byte records to the application, regardless of blocksize.

Even if for some computing platforms ENV(F ...) is required, Ms. Hughes should have inserted a cautionary note. As I have demonstrated at times to my user community, the difference in time and space usage between blocked and unblocked records is very dramatic.

An excellent manual and tutorial for PL/I programming

I needed a reference manual for PL/I and decided to go for this book. It is very good if you are new to the language or are trying to remember what a particular function does. It even has separate sections at the back of the book for ASCII and EBCDIC tables, how the different PL/I data formats are stored in records, and a good summary at the back showing which functions are supported by the various PL/I compilers and subsets. It is not a the cheapest (hardback) book on PL/I but is well worth the investment.

Great book. My professor uses problems this textbook as homework. I was given a choice either this one or the university physics textbook. Of course, I choose this one because it's cheap and concise and I couldn't find the pdf version on the Internet. If you hate super thick and verbose physics textbook, I highly recommend this version. I also got the fifth edition for free and found it verbose and confusing

A very good start.

Halliday & Resnick & Krane is the best introductory general physics book (or set of books) out there in addition to Serway's textbook. I used both volumes in undergraduate school. The concepts are laid out clearly, logically and effectively. It starts with mechanics, continues with thermodynamics, then electromagnetism and modern physics.

The worked-out problems are quite instructive. There are plenty of end-of-chapter problems. The only negative side of these problems is that most of the numbers make you use a calculator. If the authors had used more rounded numbers, the problems could have been solved by a paper and pencil. In doing so, students could have improved their math skills.

The "modern physics" part of the book can be learned well, if you have a good instructor. Because, to someone with no knowledge of modern physics, this part could be rather challenging.

Overall, this is a very high-quality book written by excellent physicists.

A classic!

Although there are a few topics that I would leave for more advanced courses and a few others I would present in more detail (even for beginner courses), it is a generally well-balanced book with great explanations on the concepts of Physics. The notation is very good and the graphics and drawings are perfectly sketched and provide great help for understanding the text. Each chapter presents a brief description of what will be studied in it and the book features some historical notes in a few topics. There is a wide list of exercises at the end of each chapter from straightforward exercises to more mindful ones. It also presents some exercises using English units in addition to the ones with International System units.

Engineering mechanics by Meriam and Kraige provides an excellent treatment of the subject matter, providing that one has all the necessary tools to handle this course. This means to have your geometry, algebra, trig., physics, and calculus internally wired. If not, one has to do the deep reviews, spending time and energy at grasping the basic concepts.

Also, if the discussion of the theory seems thin and problem sets seem unrepresentative, might I suggest another statics book by Riley and Sturges, 2nd ed. The exposition is expanded and provides clarity, the problem sets are a bit on the bland side, but the example sets provide reasonable representation to the problems in the book.

But, of all the problem sets of all statics books I have seen, Meriam and Kraige has the most realistic graphics and real world stuff. If you can internalize this book, your other mechanics courses like mech. of materials, dynamics, and fluids will move much more smoothly.

And, if a problem in the text appears impossible, it is always because of a misunderstanding of simpler concepts. It doesn't hurt being creative when problem solving. That is, to make additional sketches, draw diagrams, to QUESTION each and every part of the problem. To break apart or separate the problem into components and then mentally observing the parts under a "magnifying glass."

This book is very challenging, and it definitely helps if you have an instructor who has energy to be able to MAKE CLEAR any concepts whether in class, through paper handouts, in person, or even through email. If your instructor is lazy, you know where most of the energy of effort will have to come from.

Finally, if you has the drive, you can succeed. If your tank is low on gas, head for your next review station. Don't let any misunderstandings linger in your mind, siphoning your confidence, time, and energy. Sometimes, you gotta hike a mountain, going from review to review. You can do it.

Excellent Reference work, difficult read for students

The text is extremely dense and concise. The principles are developed almost axiomatically and assume the reader has fully digested earlier material. The concepts are developed in a highly abstract, mathematical way. This makes the text an extremely useful reference once you are familiar with the material, but it is quite difficult for students new to the material. The instructor has to work hard to expand and develop the conceptual material.
There are a number of worked examples with annotations explaning the solution. I found these examples quite helpful, however, there is not any material specifically focussed on problem solving skills.
The strength of this book is its extensive collection of excellent problems illustrated by easy-to-understand color figures. The problems draw on a wide range of real-world examples. Their concrete nature helps makes a Statics course seem relevant and interesting. The quality and scope of the problems easily exceeds that of most other texts. Many of the problems require the student to first figure out what they're being asked to calculate, an important real-world aspect of problem solving. One drawback is that a number of problems depend on fairly tricky geometrical reasoning, which tends to obscure the statics skills being practiced. Finally, there isn't any real attempt to introduce the computer to solving statics problems. As a consequence, there are no problems asking for judgements -- questions such as "at what angle is the force in the bar the least?" Similarly, the large number of simultaneous equations to be solved in some problems could be done more easily on the computer. However, instructors may prefer that students first become proficient solving the problems by hand before making computer-based solutions.
Overall, the problems make this a good text for an instructor to use, but they will have to work hard to help the students learn the concepts and problem solving skills needed to be successfull.

Disorganized thoughts put together

Having read the authors book of Fundametals of Hedge Funds (which was very good), I looked forward to this book. However I was very disappointed. First it was very short (only 125 pages) and much of the book was a summary of his prior book. Finally what was new was repeated multiple times. I was hoping for more detail and i-depth analysis. And of course the author can not predict the market but the collapse of Lehman which took place two months after he wrapped up the book most likely would have changed his opinions and direction of the book.

OK beginner guide

On the buy side: the book is fine for the novice who requires a preliminary framework for evaluating HFs. Those, who have spent more than 3 months in this space, will likely not find this book valuable.

On the sell side, for those PMs who are considering launching their own product, the book provides a very basic but concise outline on the required back office and third parties necessary to attract real (institutional) money. It will also prepare them for the basic questions that will be asked during preliminary due diligence.

does not question 'fund of funds'

The book was written in 2008 shortly after Bear Stearns collapsed, but before the fall of Lehman. It is a safe bet that the author did not anticipate the searing events of later in 2008, that have been the largest financial collapse in the US since the Great Depression.

It's probably so that hedge funds will continue to exist going forward. But the book already reads like it was from another time. As in "funds of funds are one of Wall Street's greatest inventions" [sic]. Yes, the book actually says that. Can you believe it?

The book explains the economics and functioning of fund of funds. But there is no serious quibble about the rationale for the very existence of these entities. Why should investors pay for another layer of fees? When the underlying hedge funds might already charge 2 and 20? The Madoff scandal exposed the sheer incompetence, if not wilful neglect, of some funds of funds, that did no due diligence but just collected a toll.

Review of Nuclear and Radiochemistry

The second edition of this text is one that has been utilized in many graduate programs. In fact, the author of this review has utilized it not only as a student but as a teaching text in several courses.

No single text contains all that is needed for an immense field of study such as radiochemistry. However, it should also be pointed out that the weakness in this text is that although it does a thorough job of covering "nuclear basics" it is very short on the "radiochemistry" side of the field. Having said this, it is a must have text for any serious student in the field.

The third edition also includes an account of discovery of the elements beyond uranium. This section is a first hand account by Glenn T. Seaborg and Walter D. Loveland the team of Nobel Laureates that lead to their discovery. Both Glenn Seaborg-an active participant in the discovery of transuranium elements-and leading chemist, and Walter Loveland, provide a unique inside account of the discovery of these elements as well as the first definitive look at their chemical, physical, and nuclear properties.

Good Book

Like many textbooks, this book covers a wide-range of applications and material. It's definitely helpful if you want a reference for a nuclear class, but can be difficult to read if you're using it for an introductory course. Overall, good book, and it's the one I go back to from time to time to clarify any questions I have. Freidlander was also an amazing guy to meet.

Great Reference Book!

Being new to any Microsoft Office product, when I purchased Office 2007, I was pretty lost. Microsoft's on-line tutorials were useless, so I purchased Office 2007 for Dummies, thinking I would use it mostly as a reference. It was so well written and easy to understand, I actually read the entire book, and am looking forward to using Publisher and Power Point (I initially purchased Office for Word and Excel). I found working with Office 2007 easy after reading this book, and have had to utilize the book as a reference very minimally. Utilizing the table of contents and index, I can quickly locate what I am looking for. I am sure this book saved me hours of frustration by laying out the concept behind the Office 2007 design, and showing me how to quickly hunt for commands that I know are there (from reading about them in the book). I am sure my learning time was greatly reduced. Great job Peter Werverka!

The Bigger Office 2007 For Dummies Book

The biggest changes in Office 2007 seem to be the new GUI (Graphical User Interface) which Microsoft calls the Ribbon. This is a complete change from the earlier GUI which we have all come to know and love. The Ribbon organizes the commands into what Microsoft calls contextual tabs. Each tab has a logical grouping of commands. This is not unlike the way you used to click on the Edit or View command and then got a list of commands, but in 2007 there are far more commands that you can reach without having to go to subsidiary menus.

The Ribbon is, of course, the result of many hours of definition, testing before audiences and of course a lot of programming effort. There's the old saying that 'user friendly is programmer difficult.' The ribbon is a common interface that is used in all of the Office applications, so learning about it is mandatory for using Office 2007.

Of course there are an awful lot of new features added to each of the applications. It's easier to get a 'Live Preview' of what you are doing in word. It's easier to do Pivot Tables in Excel, and so on. These applications have been around so long that they are not getting big massive upgrades. I frankly don't know what more they could add. ==Of course this is a 'For Dummies' book. This means that the writing is good, the proof reading catches all the mispellings, and there's even a bit of humor.

There are two Office 2007 For Dummies books. This is the bigger, Desk Reference, version, that is about twice as long as the other one. Part of this is because this book covers Publisher 2007 as well as the other software. Part of this is because each subject is covered in a bit more depth. My honest selection is that you buy both books. They are by different authors and they have a different way of expressing themselves. Often when there is a stumbling block, having two sets of words helps to understand the problem. If you're only going to buy one book, then it's this one, simply because there is more here.

The Office 2007 All-In-One Desk Reference for Dummies is very helpful for someone trying to weather the transition from previous versions of Microsoft Office to the new Microsoft Office 2007. This book not only covers common office applications, but gets into more detail for each program (Word, Outlook, Excel, Access, etc.) I would highly recommend this book to anyone who needs an easy-to-follow guide to the new software.
