Environmental Organic Chemistry (Environmental Science and Technology Series), by René P. Schwarzenbach, Philip M. Gschwend, Dieter

Demonstrates how the chemical structure of organic compounds influences the molecular interactions which control transfer and reaction processes in the natural environment. Thoroughly explains how to quantify these processes using the principles of chemistry, physics and biology in a macroscopic environmental system. Focuses on the behavior of major synthetic organic chemicals introduced in large quantities into the environment. Contains more than 100 illustrations, an extensive bibliography and useful reference material such as constants, units and equations. Serves as a text for introductory courses in environmental organic chemistry as well as a source of information for the professional concerned with risk and hazard assessment of organic chemical pollutants in the environment.

Review
"…a comprehensive set of fundamental concepts that provides the quantitative tools necessary to evaluate the fate of the organic chemicals in the environment…" (Vadose Zone Journal, May 2007)

"…can be considered as the 'Bible of Organic Environmental Chemistry'…. will help to establish the subject discipline in the future" (International Journal of Environmental Analytical Chemistry, 2004)

"…the authors have added substantially new material and improved the consistency of presentation in this second edition. This text should continue to be the leader in the field of environmental organic chemistry." (Journal of Chemical Education, Vol. 80, No. 10, October 2003)

From the Back Cover
An updated, expanded edition of the authoritative text in environmental organic chemistry

Environmental organic chemistry focuses on compound properties and environmental factors governing the processes that determine the fate of organic chemicals in natural and engineered systems; this knowledge is then applied to quantitatively assessing the environmental behavior of organic chemicals. Long established as the discipline’s authoritative text, the second edition of Environmental Organic Chemistry boasts the assets of its predecessor, along with complete coverage of the latest advances in the field.

The Second Edition offers a more holistic view of the physical-chemical properties of organic compounds, as well as a helpful division of chapters into sections covering basic and sophisticated material. New topics such as gas/solid partitioning, bioaccumulation, and transformations in the atmosphere are covered alongside the core material of the first edition, and of the companion "Problems Book." Divided into four main parts–Equilibrium Distribution Between Gaseous, Liquid, and Solid Phases; Transformation Processes; Modeling Tools: Transport and Reaction; and Environmental Systems and Case Studies–the book’s chapters include:

  • Molecular interactions and thermodynamics
  • Activity coefficient and solubility in water
  • Air-water and solvent-water partitioning
  • Sorption to organic and inorganic sorbents
  • Bioaccumulation, biomagnification, and nonspecific toxic effects
  • Thermodynamics and kinetics of transformation reactions
  • Biological transformation reactions
  • Internal transport by diffusion and advection across boundaries
  • Models for lakes, rivers, and groundwaters

Expert authors Schwarzenbach, Gschwend, and Imboden provide the complete theoretical background of the subject, as well as illustrative examples, problems, and case studies. Like the first, the second edition of Environmental Organic Chemistry is an invaluable resource for all industry, government, and academic professionals dealing with assessing organic pollutants in the environment.

Good but complicated
By Arvind Mohanram
I am using this book as part of my graduate class. Before I got this book, I was using the old edition, believe me the old edition is much simpler, easier to understand than this new one. They have integrated the book with overwhelming symbols for which they do not even have the key/index. You spend a lot of time figuring out what the symbols mean. So, I would recommend that you try to get a hold of the old edition of the book, however remember that the old edition does not cover the modelling part and does not give you exposure to the problem sets.

So, the bottom line is that if you want to get an understanding and feel of the subject goahead for the old edition, but if this is your core area of research and do not mind a bit of complication in the writing and explanation, go for the new edition.

Perhaps a good reference text, but it's supposed to be a graduate intro text
By Jeremy Waterman
Compared to the 1st edition this text is about twice the size. It is a monstrously large book. However, the book fails to teach the concepts in a clear fashion required when one is just starting in the field. Too much attention is spent to minute details that confound the subject. A great deal of space is used on deriving formulas.

It is without a doubt that the authors are exceptional minds in their fields, and have a fine understanding of the material. However, speaking as a student, they do me no favors in explaining what is going on. This text needs to be rewritten and edited to serve as a useful textbook for graduate students. Until then, the book will possibly be useful as a reference.

Great Environmental Chemistry Book but Dense
By J. Noel
This is a very comprehensive environmental chemistry book, and I would highly recommend this book for any graduate level environmental chemistry class. Schwarzenbach's book targets graduate students (or advanced undergraduates) in environmental chemistry, environmental engineering and chemical engineering. As such, the reader should be well versed in chemistry and math including organic chemistry, thermodynamics and kinetics. The introductory chapters help catch up the user on organic chemistry but in no way should be the reader's first exposure to chemistry concepts. The strength of this book is to help train students to solve environmental chemistry issues especially organic chemistry, though it does lack a little in transport concepts and inorganic chemistry. However, other texts/classes are need to address these issues.

The book is very thorough and a highly useful reference. Having been a teaching assistant to classes that have used this book as well as lectured from it, I recommend that the entirety of the book be taught over 2 semesters. Trying to teach all this material in two semesters is a challenge let alone one semester.

In summary, this is a great thorough environmental chemistry book that is a great reference as I still go to it from time to time to help solve an address environmental chemistry issues. The book targets graduate students already familiar with organic chemistry and thermodynamics and should be taught over 2 semesters.
