One of the best books on NLP at this level

I am also referring to the 2nd Edition of the book.

I largely agree with review by Marc Sachon except the part about Dantzig's book: if you are new to LP/NLP, or Mathematical Programming in general, stay away from Dantzig's book. Its writing style is entirely outdated and will put you to sleep in no time. Reading from Dantzig to learn about LP is like reading Newton's originals to learn physics/calculus.

If you're new to LP / NLP I *strongly* recommend Vanderbei, and THEN this book.

This book covers enough ground for fast paced novices and beyond novices.
It's mathematical but not rigorous in the strict mathematician's way - for that kind of exposure look elsewhere. It covers a breadth of subjects/issues related to LP / NLP not often found in other books at its level, so in a way it is like a small compendium.

It's more up-to-date than say, R. Fletcher's "Practical Methods of Optimization", or Gill, Murray & Wright's "Practical Optimization" both good MSc level books but somewhat dated now and perhaps a bit tedious sometimes. However, if you're a novice, I advise you to look at them also, if you have access to them, as they might serve your specific needs/ reading style better/equally well. You should also look at Luenberger's "Linear and Nonlinear Programming" which is also quite old but has a classic writing style and is holding up rather well. If you want the fine nitty-gritty details and the breadth of coverage though, Bazaraa has more. Luenberger's more solid and rigorous.

Haven't had the chance to look at the more recent "Nonlinear Optimization" by Andrzej Ruszczynski but it might be as good/better as he's also an expert in the field - so keep that in mind.

"Convex Optimization" by Stephen Boyd is more advanced (not too advanced though, depending on your maths ability) and moving in a slightly different field/teritory.

Great Book for NLP (for the mathematically inclined only!)

I am referring to the Bazaraa, Sherali and Shetty book "Nonlinear Programming, Theory and Applications", second edition (it seems that Amazon missed the third author).
This is a great book for anyone who is interested in nonlinear optimization. The book presents the topic in a clear and concise manner, provides learning aides in form of examples and generally has a very well structured layout. I have other books on NLP, but I consider this the best one (Luenberger is great, too - but very condensed). The book consists of three parts: the first part presents convex analysis, the second part looks at optimality conditions and the third part presents algorithms. If you went through some OR textbooks and felt that they didn't give you enough on NLP, this is the place to get your fix!
This book for NLPs together with Dantzig's work on LPs and you have the basic toolset for static optimization.

great book on an interesting topic

These authors provide an excellent guide to the available theory of robust regression. Graphical methods are well used to bring home the points. I have always liked looking at outliers and robustness from an influence function viewpoint and the authors do an excellent job of describing that theory.

The book came out in 1987 and so it is a little dated. Another reviewer criticizes some of the software that is mentioned. With computer methodology advancing so rapidly one should not expect the state-of-the-art in computing from a 14 year old text. Value it for its exposition and development of the theory.

Easy to follow introduction

Why should I read this book?
- The introduction alone is worth half the price of this book. It gives you a very good overview of robust estimators like m-estimators, least median of squares and least trimmed squares. Basically, you could just take the introduction and start implementing, if that's what you want. The author is able to tell how this and that method overcomes a problem and for what price, and all in one paragraph.
What do I need to understand this book?
- The math in this book is kept at an engineer's level, so an introductory course on statistics should be enough to follow the introduction and to get an insight into the following chapters. A lot of examples with real life data and nice plots show how the methods perform.
What's the drawback?
- The author talks a lot about his old-school fortran program called 'PROGRESS' - and eventually comes up with screen dumps (when people were still using terminals) of the program output. He even gives usage information like 'PROGRESS is designed to run on an IBM-PC or a compatible microcomputer. At least 256K RAM must be available.' Neither the source nor the binary is shipped with the book.
- Some new trends in robust statistics are not included, in particular, I do miss the RANSAC.
Conclusion:
- Better get this book from a library and photocopy the introduction. If you're not really interested, the introductory chapter should be enough.

Too much for nothing

The book lists a series of financial theories without bringing any clear connection to operational risk. The tools and techniques presented can be seen in any other finance book. No examples are presented in general, making questionable the author's experience in the "measurement of operational risk" as stated in the title. This book will not raise your knowledge in the field.

Good overview of topics on quantitative aspects of genetics

The book is a collection of chapters written by experts in their respective fields. It contains both basic topics of genetics like chromosome maps and protein analysis as well as recent developments in evolutionary genetics like coalescence and phylogenetics. The topics on genetic epidemiology like linkage and association cover the main ideas, but the mathematical subtlities are not adequately explained in some of the cases. Since the target audience of this book are statistical geneticists, it would have been more beneficial if more quantitative insights were given. The chapters by Bruce Weir, Nicholas Schork and Ranajit Chakraborty provide some interesting practical applications of statistical genetics. With lots of controversies going around, it is apt to include the chapter on the ethical issues regarding the use of statistics in genetics.

One of the best books on Continuum Mechanics.

I think this book tends to fill the bibliographic void left by the Classic and "currently dificult to get" works of C. Truesdell's "The Non-Linear Field Theories of Mechanics" and D. C. Leigh's "Nonlinear Continuum Mechanics; An Introduction to the Continuum Physics and Mathematical Theory of the Nonlinear Mechanical Behavior of Materials". This book is divided mainly in two parts, one part dealing with the mathematical framework at which the subject is based on, and the other one deals with the Physical Principles and the Constitutive Theories of several materials including rubber like materials and biological tissue. It is true that you will not find a specific definition of Nonlinear Material Behavior as I was supposed to find it at the begginig of the work. Instead of that, such a definition must be self-generated into the decided reader's mind, once he or she begins to read the book's parts regarding to Hyperelastic and Viscoelastic Materials .
