Excellent Heat X-Fer but So-So Mass X-Fer

I used this textbook for a few years when teaching a course in heat and mass transfer. The heat transfer parts are some of the best I've seen. Very clear explanations and great diagrams. The mass transfer material is not all that great. The authors are mechanical engineers but mass transfer is really the domain of chemical engineers. They're not as often clear (or even totally correct) in the mass transfer sections. There used to be a heat transfer only version of this textbook which might be a better buy. For mass transfer I would use any established chemical engineering textbook.

Thorough heat transfer book

This is an excellent text for the heat transfer novice, both as a supplement to a class and as a personal teaching tool. The writing is easy to understand, and the chapters are arranged logically. The examples are well chosen and usually demonstrate how the theory and equations can be put to good use.
I have only two complaints about this text: There are far too few sample problems (and no problems with only answers provided) and the mass transfer is not taught in a useful way. The prior is a failure of many text books, but the latter is a major drawback. Incropera and Dewitt basically say "Mass transfer is the same as heat transfer, except use these units and equations." All of the mass transfer is tucked into a few chapters, as if it was an afterthought.
I recommend this book to anyone interested in the fundamentals of heat transfer, but look elsewhere for a useful introduction to mass transfer.

Excellent heat and mass transfer book

I thought this book covered conduction and convection heat
transfer well, but I thought a better job could have been
done on the section about radiation heat transfer. Perhapes
more examples of radiation problems could have been used to
make the subject more clear.

I thought the mass transfer sections were well written and
easy to understand.

The solution guide to the problems are not available to the
students. As with all engineering books, I think the solution
guides should be available to the students to promote quicker
and more efficient learning.

Difficult and dense but highly useful

Much more dense and difficult to initially grasp than the hibbeler text on the same subject, but leads to a deeper understanding as many of the formulas are derived and the worked examples are sufficiently difficult. My TA noted that this book may be less ideal for students looking to merely learn the material and pass the class, but its derivation and application focused method makes for a great lecture text.

I'd say use Hibbeler to get your initial taste of the topics, and use this book to deepen and strengthen your knowledge.

Excellent worked examples

This book, part of 2-volume set along with its companion "Statics", is very good textbook. Its strength are the examples and illustrations which are in full color and very detailed. The book has a full range of the kinds of practical problems in basic dynamics which you need to solve. The theory presentation is complete, but has some oddities in its language and the focus is more on making a correct mathematical exposition of each concept, almost proof-like, rather than attempting to be didactic. For this reason it is easy to get lost in the text or find it confusing unless you work through it very slowly. If you prefer to learn by doing, this is a good book because you can learn by doing the examples and use the text more as a reference. If you require hand-holding or detailed textual explanations this is not the right book for you.

Logically good

If a book is informative and well-written, then it is a good book. In the world of logic, if the antecedent ("if a book is informative and well-written") is true, then the consequent ("then it is a good book") must also be true. Furthermore, for an "and" statement to be true, both of its components (informative, well-written) must individually be true. So, is Logic for Dummies by Mark Zegarelli a good book?

It is informative. After a brief overview of logic (including its history), Zegarelli gets into the meat of logic, with a particular focus on sentential and quantifier logic. Of course, these terms mean little to the novice in logic, but he gives plenty of explanation as to what both are. Both are considered forms of classical logic and reduce statements to what are essentially formulas of letters and symbols. In a way, it's like mathematics in its approach to proofs. It's not always easy to breeze through, but with patience, it all adds up. Beyond classical logic, Zegarelli also gives the reader a brief introduction into other, sometimes more exotic, forms of logic.

It is well-written. This means two things. First, Zegarelli is able to convey his information in an understandable fashion. That is not to say it is always easy to understand at first glance, but (as stated before), if you carefully follow his explanation, it makes sense. Second, it is readable. It is possible to be both informative and clear and still read dryly; Zegarelli writes with a light, occasionally humorous, tone that makes the reading much more enjoyable.

So logically, this is a good book, as the "if" part is true. Is it a great book? Not quite, which is why I'm rating it four stars and not five. Despite its generally being informative and well-written, it lacks the quality of excellence. There are times when Zegarelli could illustrate his topics better, and there are some topics (such as paradoxes and logical fallacies) that he could delve into deeper. But even if not perfect, this serves as a good introduction to the subject (as "Dummies" books often do), so if you want to learn more about logic, this book is a good place to start.

Beware of typos and errors

While I thought this book was laid-out well and served as a good introduction, I was disappointed to see such a large number of errors in the book. It made me wonder if anyone had bothered to proof-read it at all. These mistakes can potentially be severely misleading to the reader unless you are alert and recognize what Zegarelli meant to say.

For example, he clearly lays out in his truth table that value for the biconditional, F T is F. Yet two pages later, there is an error that states that F T is T. In another spot, a parentheses is omitted which completely alters the value of the statement. In another, the statement he is evaluating contains a biconditional but the sentence below the statement refers to an &-operator that isn't even in the statement! And then there's this one: he states, "But when P is true and Q is false, the statement is false", when in actuality he has completely mixed up the truth values of P and Q according to his own truth table. Needless to say, unless you already have a background in logic or are adept enough to pick up on these errors, the reader can easily be confused by these apparent contradictions.

Potential buyers should also be aware that there are a large number of references to pop-culture such as Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Lopez, and Hell's Kitchen. I'm sure Zegarelli uses these as a poor attempt at humor and to try to make readers relate to the subject-matter, but his assumptions about the knowledge and interests of his audience may not necessarily be applicable to everyone.

Despite these misgivings, the book does give a good basic refresher to the material at hand.

Best intro to logic out there

I have schlepped through the Hodges and Tarski books to teach myself basic symbolic logic, as well as the Schaum's guide for practice problems.

Why, I ask myself. Probably because I dropped college logic because I found it too confusing and the professor an obtuse windbag. Because of this act of cowardice, I have tried to make amends by learning on my own in my spare time. I also found that I enjoyed it, but it was slow-going.

While far from perfect, this is the BEST way to learn solid fundamentals in logic, I only wish it were available years ago. I would have saved lots of time and frustration.

DANIEL C. MILLER, PhD, is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychology and Philosophy at Texas Woman's University in Denton, Texas. He holds a Diplomate in School Psychology from the American Board of Professional Psychology and a Diplomate in School Neuropsychology from the American Board of School Neuropsychology. He is a past president of the National Association of School Psychologists.

Great Resource

I have purchased other books from the "Essential" series and this one is by far the best. It provides information about the history of school neuropsych, as well as information about assessing each area of functioning. There is a nice "sample" report as well and helpul tips throughout. I have already incorporated some of the ideas from the book into my reports. I highly recommend this book. The only negative is that the author lists different types of tests for each area of assessment, but does not interject his opinion in terms of which tests he thinks provides the best information in that particular area. In any event, I would definitely recommend this book to anyone that evaluates children for learning issues, etc.

Excellent Resource on Child Neuropsychological Evaluations

The 'Essentials' series typically provides a scaled-down version of the topic being covered. This is certainly the case with this book as well, though I am impressed by the volume of material the author managed to put into this book. At 442 pages, this book is somewhat longer than others in the series I'm familiar with, but it still maintains the concise and easy-to-follow approach. As a comparison, the ESSENTIALS OF NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT only contains 247 pages; go figure.

The author starts with a historical overview of neuropsychological evaluations in school settings. While some might think this to be tedious---especially in a book that is supposed to be somewhat 'rapid reference'--- it serves an important part by reminding us of the evolution that has occurred in child assessment through the years. It is important to keep in mind that neuropsychology in general---but especially pediatric neuropsychology---is a 'young' field, with most major developments happening only within the past 60 years.

Subsequent chapters address key areas of neuropsychological assessment, such as memory, sensory-motor functions, attention, language, etc. A guide (semi-template) on writing reports is included, as are recommendations for which tests to consider when putting an assessment together. Although it's not a bonus chapter, per se, the author concludes with a nice chapter on assessing children with Autism and other pervasive developmental disorders.

Overall, I'm very impressed with this book. Since a key part of my child psychology practice is the administration of neuropsychological testing, I feel the author covered the main points in a straight-forward, easy-to-digest manner. Thus, the content is well-suited to novice clinicians, as well as those with greater training/experience.

All that stated, I wish our school systems afforded more time and opportunity for diagnosticians to do neuropsychological testing of kids. The author correctly points out that only a few schools have clinicians who are trained to do neuropsychological testing. Even if they did, who would have the time, given all the competing demands?

Anyhow, school psychologists would do well to familiarize themselves with the content and tests included in this book. Even having the NEPSY-II (if your school district would pay for it), would help round out the arsenal of tests that can be used with kids.

Very comprehensive, well written overview

I ordered this book for a course I am taking with the author. I have not read the entire book yet but, as a practicing school psychologist for 34 years, I am very impressed with the style and content so far. The Essentials series are great.

A very good introduction just got better!

This book has been a standard reference used by many graduate students and advanced undergraduates as well as practicing engineers and scientists since its first edition in 1991. The first edition of this book is still available in paper back and it is tightly integrated and written by many of the early pioneers of fiber optic sensor technology.

These chapters are still current and provide a very good basis for introducing the field. There are however a number of important developments that were missing including fiber grating sensor technology, a more compressive introduction to the field of fiber optic smart structures and their application to aersopace and civil structures and important sensors associated with biomedical and chemical applications. The editors have written two extensive chapters that do a very good job of introducing these missing elements and have brought the book up to date and greatly extended its usefulness.

I would recommend this book to anyone who want to learn about and or utilize this technology. If the reader is not interested in the use of fiber gratings and their applications or medical and chemical applications the first edition will work...still the price difference is not that great and likely if you bought the first you are probably eventually going to break down and buy the 2nd.

One of the best introductions to FO technology

I purchased this book to help me get started on some fiber optic projects for my employer. I found the book to be very readable and clear. While the information within is not heavily mathematic, there is tons of relevant information to get you started understanding how to apply fiber optic technologies to industrial projects.

I would recommend this book for anyone with a background in science or engineering (as the title suggests) who does not already possess an introductory book on the technology.

Haute Cuisine Done Correctly

The title of this important cookbook is most unfortunate. You might think that this book is only for seasoned, experienced professionals only. This is absolutely not the case. It is really just a continuation of Gisslen Professional Cooking 6th Edition w/CD-ROM + Professional Cooking 6th Edition Study Guide - SET>. If you have some cooking skill, then you will benefit from this book. I am very impressed with this cookbook and recommend it highly.

The recipes in this volume are closer to the retail recipes that you are likely to prepare either professionally or at home. In fact, each recipe has 2 different yields: 4 servings for home and 16 servings for restaurant service. The copyright is 1992 and some recipes are past tense e.g. flavored fresh pasta. But how about: soft-shell crab, flavored beurre blanc, foie gras, and fresh sausages? In fact, the selection of recipes reads very much like a current, best-selling cookbook.

If you are like me, you have any number of classic, French, haute cuisine cookbooks: Escoffier, and others. Even experienced professionals will often despair at the rather vague procedures for ballontines, galantines, wild poultry and game (duck, quail, squab?), and forcemeat stuffed fish. This volume will give complete, correct, professionally proven recipes for all these classic dishes. Never made pate en croute or a terrine before? Ever had to butcher an entire beef tenderloin or carve a saddle of lamb? What about kidney, sweetbreads, tripe, or brain? Confused by books that will throw around words like simmer, poele, braise, en cocotte, saute, pan fry, poach, and pot roast without explaining the difference? This book will explain all. Note that many of these recipes are long and involved (not really difficult, just time consuming requiring patience). Many need 2 or 3 pages of recipe steps, which are often casually tossed off in a couple of terse sentences in various, older Haute Cuisine cookbooks.

Advanced Professional Cooking

This book is great and would get 5 Stars if it cost less. It is almost the same as The Chef's Art also by Wayne Gisslen. The differences are APC has 2 chapters on how to maintain food safty,... I have checked CA(my edition) and the index is EXACT except for the 2 chapters. If you need food handling and safty information it is a good investment, but I have all the info in other books, and think it is better to save the money.

About the Author

James M. Briesmeister, PhD, is a psychotherapist with a private practice, and a psychological examiner for the State of Michigan, Department of Jobs Commission. A prolific author and coeditor of books on family therapy and parent training, he also teaches various psychology courses at Macomb College and is a member of the Institutional Research Review Board at the University of Detroit Mercy.

Charles E. Schaefer, PhD, is Professor of Psychology and Director of The Center for Psychological Services at Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey. A recipient of the Play Therapy Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association for Play Therapy (APT), he has coauthored or edited numerous books on child therapy and parenting.
