A very good introduction just got better!

This book has been a standard reference used by many graduate students and advanced undergraduates as well as practicing engineers and scientists since its first edition in 1991. The first edition of this book is still available in paper back and it is tightly integrated and written by many of the early pioneers of fiber optic sensor technology.

These chapters are still current and provide a very good basis for introducing the field. There are however a number of important developments that were missing including fiber grating sensor technology, a more compressive introduction to the field of fiber optic smart structures and their application to aersopace and civil structures and important sensors associated with biomedical and chemical applications. The editors have written two extensive chapters that do a very good job of introducing these missing elements and have brought the book up to date and greatly extended its usefulness.

I would recommend this book to anyone who want to learn about and or utilize this technology. If the reader is not interested in the use of fiber gratings and their applications or medical and chemical applications the first edition will work...still the price difference is not that great and likely if you bought the first you are probably eventually going to break down and buy the 2nd.

One of the best introductions to FO technology

I purchased this book to help me get started on some fiber optic projects for my employer. I found the book to be very readable and clear. While the information within is not heavily mathematic, there is tons of relevant information to get you started understanding how to apply fiber optic technologies to industrial projects.

I would recommend this book for anyone with a background in science or engineering (as the title suggests) who does not already possess an introductory book on the technology.
