Great Book .. BUT,,,,

I thought this was one of the best books on managing people and investment assets that I have read. However, one of the primary reasons that I bought the book was for the forms. I should have checked the website first I guess. When I went to download my free forms I was not pleased. First, the links in the books didn't work, I had to hunt and peck my way through several websites to find a "free form" download page. Then I am provided a buton to click to buy the forms in a convienent package for $80. Or I can complete a form with my info to get them emailed to me one at a time. I would have to complete the form for each form I want emailed to me. Then I see that they are charging for specific forms that they state are free in the book.

All in all the book was a good value. I feel however that the Free Forms was a bait and switch and it will prevent me form purchasing any items from Mike Butler in the future. I did email his company form the contact form on the website. All that got me was a barage of spam email from them on seminars, software etc.... I am hoping that I will get somewhere with them and then I can update this review.

Great book!!!

We purchased this book right about the time we were buying our first rental property. It was worth every penny and some. It's an easy read - you feel like you're just having a good heart-to-heart with someone who's been there and done that. Mike's advice will save you from making beginner mistakes and point you in the right direction every time. His advice is sound and he brings up many items that the first-time rental property owner would never think of.

What's as good is the fact that after reading the book you are given websites where you can download free forms - which I must say has saved us HOURS.

If you are just beginning in the rental property business or have not seemed to have much luck - I say this a MUST-READ!!!!

1/2/09 - We were one of the first to purchase this book - and the first to post a review. At the time, the forms, although kind of tricky to download, were free. However, it does seem like Mike is trying to make money from webinars, seminars, etc...and it doesn't surprise me he is now charging for the forms. That was one of the main reasons I gave the book 5 stars - the free forms made it worth everything. I didn't want anyone to think I had misled them initially.

GREAT BOOK FOR ANY RENTAL PROPERTY INVESTOR!

Ok, Full disclosure. I was offered another set of forms for an unbiased review of this book. I had previously read this book while in Seattle. Having just bought another property on the east coast, I really really wanted the forms and information that was offered in this book (i did not want to buy it again though)... So, I found Mike Butler's website, provided my email address and downloaded all the forms that I really loved the first time around. Now, This book is truely great for any investor looking to find great tenants and maintain those tenants with minimal turnover. The infomation is a tad bit dated (I.E. mention of beepers, ect), but can be put to use even EASIER with modern technology. I've read at least 4 managment books and this is the one I wanted for screening tenants this time around. My favorite part of the book focuses on how to make and accept rental applications while giving the landloard an ability to choose the best tenants all without fear of violating fair rental laws or losing a lawsuit. This is a great book for anybody looking to invest in rental property! Like I said, I wasn't paid or offered anything physical for my review. Just acess to another great set of forms, So I jumped at the oprotunity. If you are thinking of investing in real estate rentals, READ THIS BOOK!

Covers the bare bones. There's no meat at all.

I purchased this book for the purpose of learning more about stock trading. While the author suggests that his text is just as applicable to stocks, his entire focus is on currency (forex) trading. He spends a great deal of the book explaining the software of his favorite forex game platform (which turns out to be irrelevant during the remainder of the text). I can only assume that Oanda subsidized his book. I would not have purchased this book had I known that.

While I am glad to know a bit more about forex trading, some of the "logic" behind doing so is faulty in my opinion. One of the premises behind trading currency is the much smaller set of investment vehicles to analyze as opposed to the thousands of stocks available. The trouble with this premise is that one currency in and of itself takes an entire economy to create its value as opposed to a stock which is a microcosm of one sector of an economy. What you end up trading with forex is not just one economy but TWO! To trade the currencies effectively, one should know what's driving the value of both entire economies. The scope of your fundamental analysis is therefore not more limited, but dynamically multiplied.

However, that being said, this book only covers the most basic concepts of trading, and in very broad generalities. He gives practical "homework" assignments, such as track market reactions to economic releases, keep a journal, write down your goals, define your strategy, stick to your strategy, don't drink and trade.

Where this book falls grossly short, for me, is in the details of his "methods". The subtitle is "From the Basics to Building a Winning Strategy". This should be interpreted as reaching only to the upper resistance area of the Basics. The window left between the Basics and the theoretical Winning Strategy is quite large. There is NO bullish breakout into the Winning Strategy trading area.

He basically says, "go create a strategy", then "test your strategy". Then says, "choose a strategy" without a single word of advice as to how to do that with any reasonable or practical sensibility. There is no discussion of the multitude of components that might make up a strategy other than "there's other books written on the subject". His homework assignment in this one area would leave the book on the shelf for years while you figure it all out yourself.

He provides a few basic testing examples, but emphasizes that they were created for the purpose of walking through a fictitious test and are not intended to provide any usable results. There's no list of things that might be testable, what indicators are available, or what variables to use, what formulas to use or how to apply any of his suggestions to the wide expanse of reality. Speaking of formulas, he throws out a great deal of quantitative results, but doesn't provide the math used to back it up. This is akin to saying, "X=10, please go test for X, and make your choices based on the results." I'm just supposed to grab these formulas out of thin air I suppose?

The few formulas that he does provide are either basic math (sell price minus purchase price equals profit), or include variables that aren't explained at all (i.e. R sub f = risk free rate of return). If you don't know what Risk Free Rate of Return is, don't worry neither do I and I've read the book.

He doesn't point you in any direction whatsoever! There's a big world out there, go invent your tests and your formulas yourself, then test all the possibilities before using real money to trade. While at the same time says that it's unreasonable for a novice to understand more than one trend indicator at a time. I'm sorry, that's just not practical advice. If I can only understand one indicator, at least point me in a somewhat limited direction and explain it to me.

He also does not give any advice as to how to find a broker, just says "find one that suits your goals". What?! Mind telling me how to do that? Never once mentions how to research their credentials, or what scams might await. How are they regulated (or not)? What should you look for as a reasonable spread? Are there hidden fees to consider? What about those bogus interest rate rules some brokers have? And absolutely nothing he suggested actually related to stocks or stock brokers at all as far as I'm concerned.

Many of his charts are illegible, or incomprehensible due to lack of explanation as to what he's charted. There are many grammatical and sentence structure errors which make portions of this text difficult to get through. His overview of the technical indicators is slack at best. He merely suggests that "there are many books that already cover that topic in great detail". In fact he makes similar statements on various topics throughout the book.

The most amazing thing is that he spends the entirety of the book explaining trading via forex. But then the trading system he shares with you in the appendix is for stocks! And not only that, the system presented completely digresses from his proposal to pick one or two trading vehicles and thoroughly back test them to develop the optimum system for that vehicle. It is the ultimate in inconsistency! Due to the number of errors in the book, there's no way I'd trust his "sample system" at the end of the book without confirming it against several other sources.

If you need someone to tell you that you need to do your homework, apply yourself to ongoing research, and plan properly prior to trading then I've just done that. No need to buy the book.

However, if you're looking for practical advice on how to find workable tools, strategy evaluation methods, or any caveats to watch out for which are prevalent in the industry, I suggest that you seek to purchase one of those other books that he alluded to.

The subtitle really should be "From the Basics and up to (but not including) Building a Winning Strategy".

An Essential Resource for Developing Traders

Rarely does a week go by in which someone in the trading world does not ask me to endorse their website, product, or publication. I politely decline 90% or more of the time. The sad truth is that many trading texts are written by individuals who are not truly experts in their domains. When I had the opportunity to review John Forman's book "The Essentials of Trading" prior to its release, I not only gave it my endorsement, but consented to write its Foreword. I would only do that for an author who knows his stuff and for a work that I am proud to be associated with.

What John has accomplished is, to my mind, the best general-purpose introduction to trading I have yet encountered. Having run a training program for aspiring professional traders at a proprietary trading firm, I know the questions that new traders ask and the lessons they need to learn. John has clearly addressed these in "The Essentials of Trading". He begins with trading mechanics: the nuts and bolts of executing and managing a trade. His discussion is accompanied by real examples, with screen shots of order tickets and trading screens. This is no academic, theoretical treatise, but a hands-on introduction to trading basics.

Later chapters take up the important topics of trading plans and risk management, followed by methods for analyzing markets and designing, testing, and optimizing trading systems. Once again, practical examples abound, with clear illustrations of actual markets, positions, and systems. A nice touch are the text boxes throughout the book highlighting key concepts. Many of these are comments from traders and the lessons they've learned.

Overall, I found John's writing to be clear and concise. He has served as content editor for the Trade2Win community site, and his writing experience shows. When I endorsed the book, I said that it was the text I wished I had when I started my training program. I stand by that comment: this is a great introduction to the trading world.

Are there weaknesses to the book? Those will depend on readers' interests. Two full chapters are devoted to trading systems, but only part of a chapter to technical analysis. Valuable insights regarding trading psychology are scattered through the text, but there is no dedicated chapter to the topic. Conversely, the bonus sample trading system included in the appendix is worth the price of the text alone, providing an illuminating example of a trading methodology.

In sum, I highly recommend "The Essentials of Trading" for new and developing traders. From execution to planning to risk management to market analysis, it covers the basics in a clear, engaging style.

Designed for the Individual Trader

Trading in the stock, foreign exchange, or other markets used to be a game played only by the experts on Wall Street or at a minimum sitting in a brokers office watching the ticker go buy. News dissemination was slow and poor. All of this has changed. The web now allows everyone the world over instant access to the same information and instant access to on line trading.

This book starts with the very beginning, opening a trading account. In the Foxhole with Sox - A Practical Perspective

I really liked this book. When I first picked it up I was curious how the author would deal with such a narrow topic. Wrong - not only didn't she struggle to 'fill up' the pages, but one gets the impression she could have easily stretched the discussion out for a few more chapters.

If you're concerned about internal controls impacting Accounts Payable, or if you're concerned about strengthening internal controls due to SOX requirements, then you owe it to yourself to pick up this book. Mary often consulted with those 'on the ground' and shares what she learned with the readers. Examples include: SOX subcertifications, problems with SAS 70 reports, real world invoicing and purchase card issues, real world vendor 'master file' issues, T&E processing, escheatment, 1099 reporting and more.

If you're stuck in the mud of SOX and can't get out, this book isn't a spiffied up BMW about as useful as a tuxedo at a bull roast. Rather it's the neighborly pickup truck with a handshake, a chain and a smile.

My only physics book

Although I am a physicist and possess many books, for a long time my collection contained only a single book related to physics: Photons and Atoms. It is the most pedagogical text to be found on the fundamental aspects of the quantized interaction of matter with light. It's concise, clear, and convincing. The reader is never left mystified about any technical detail: no assumptions or approximations are left unexplained or swept under the rug. Yet, in spite of the high technical level the text is full of insights and simple intuitive pictures as well. Worth mentioning are also the exercises in each Chapter, which are remarkably useful and rewarding, Moreover, the solutions are given and display the same clarity of style and insightful remarks as the main text. The main emphasis of the book is on the nonrelativistic formulation of QED, but, of course, there is also a chapter devoted to the relativistic version that includes a description of how to take in a proper fashion the non-relativistic limit. Also questions of gauge, such as concerning the often confusing choice between "p.A" and "r.E" are treated, and it is, e.g., explicitly shown how in numerical problems the two are not always equivalent, as approximations made are not necessarily gauge invariant. Is there anything bad to say about this book? Almost not: for a while I had the impression that this book was the only one without any typographical errors, but in the meantime I have discovered 2. To be a bit more serious, maybe there is something: the book focuses on fundamental issues and, hence, if you expect ---especially given the title of the book---to read about problems such as spontaneous emission or laser-induced ionization of atoms, then you will be disappointed. In that case, you will have to check out the companion volume: atom-photon interactions. But hey, that's not such a bad book either.

Excellent book for students beginning graduate study in Statistics. Would recommend this book over most. I have several in related topics. If you're new to proofs, this book has great explanations behind many crucial proofs to understanding material at this level.

A very useful book

This book covers a lot of materials that will contribute to a solid understanding of matrix algebra. I would, by all means, recommend this book, but would still like to point out some weaknesses:

1. Unattractive page layout. Page after page of dull looks. Need more visuals; I don't mean colorful graphics but black-and-white diagrams and geometric interpretations.

2. From time to time, I felt like the author would give examples only on easy-to-understand topics, but avoid giving examples on difficult-to-understand ones. That didn't make sense to me.

3. Proofs should be more clearly presented. It seems like the author is always in a hurry to just get the job done. I guess it was designed for uninterested readers to simply skip the proofs without making them feel they have skipped over a lot of materials. However, for an interested reader like me, who isn't particularly strong in proofs, it was a disfavor.

4. Illustration topics could be more diverse. For instance, there are too many illustrations dealing with genetics. I would appreciate more everyday examples, like the taxi one.

Again, I would strongly recommend this book, despite what I think are its weaknesses.

Overrated

"This book is adressed to people of limited ability or training in mathematics and is an attempt to keep the mathematical presentation as informal as possible." At least according to the preface of the book.

I do not think the author has succeeded in this selfproclaimed goal. In some chapters - which I consider core chapters - results are simply offered as theorems and then proved without any comment on the significance of the result. Theres a lack of a unified approach, where new concepts are linked to old ones whenever possible, and the notation is at times inconsistent both within and across chapters. Simple matters are presented in a complicated fashion perhaps to save space. The chapters on statistical application - particularly regression - did not impress me since I have seen appendices in stat books treat the matrix algebra with more insight rather than the dry computational fashion which seems to be the drive of this book.

Considering the amount of books available on linear algebra I find this book way too expensive and too dense to be worth the time.

To me this was not the hoped for bridge from linear algebra to a deepened understanding of the math behind in my case regression.

Frommer (A Yankee Century; Red Sox vs. Yankees) spares no detail in this exhaustive but sometimes tedious recounting of the 1927 New York Yankees championship season. The team, which won 110 games when the regular season was eight games shorter than it is today, starred the iconic Babe Ruth and a young Lou Gehrig. Ruth had his career high 60 home run season, and Gehrig batted in a league-leading 175 runs. The Yankees' trademark rallies were dubbed Five O'clock Lightning, as they often scored in late innings when the clock struck five (Yankee Stadium in those days had no lights, and most games started at 3:30 p.m.). Frommer sets the stage with a sweeping overview of New York in the 1920s, and then chronologically rehashes the preseason, spring training, each month of the regular season and then the four-game sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates in the World Series. He concludes with a chapter containing obituaries of all 31 members of the team, many of whom succumbed at early ages: Gehrig died 14 years after the 1927 season, at the age of 38, and Ruth 21 years later, at 53. A Solid Three Stars

This is the second book on the New York Yankees entitled Five O'Clock Lightning. The first came out a few years ago and was written by former Yankee Tommy Henrich and Bill Gilbert. This new version on the 1927 Yankees provides us with an introduction to each of the players on the roster including Manager Miller Huggins and batboy Eddie Bennett. We are provided with anecdotes regarding Ruth, Gehrig, Lazzeri, Joe Dugan, Bob Meusel, Urban Shocker, manager Miller Huggins, and others, but if you have done some significant reading on baseball history you will find many of the same stories repeated here. The regular season is covered with more statistics than I care to read about. The World Series against the Pirates follows, but it is hard to jazz up a four game route. To me the best part of the book was the final section regarding what happened in the future to each of those involved. The reader will know about Ruth, Gehrig, and Huggins, but the demise of the remaining members of the team is covered as well. The book is a quick read depending on your background. Writer Damon Runyon's name is misspelled (Runyan) three times on pages 74 and 75. Regarding the 1927 Yankees St. Louis pitcher Milt Gaston is quoted as saying, "There isn't a moment's mental rest for a pitcher against that batting order." It sounds like this also will apply to the 2008 Detroit Tigers. I rate this book a solid three stars. It isn't a classic by any means, and I'm sure it wasn't meant to be.

A solid four-bagger

Harvey Frommer brings the 1927 New York Yankees to life in Five O'Clock Lightning. While Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig were the stars of the club, readers will learn a lot about the rest of the roster, including little-known players such as Benny Bengough, George Pipgras, Mark Koenig, Wilcy Moore, Mike Gazella and others. Frommer fleshes out the players with information about their backgrounds, personalities and careers.

Commenting on the '27 club, considered by many to be the greatest in baseball history, Yankees pitcher Sam Jones said, "The Yankees were more than a great offensive club. They were the best defensive club in both leagues. That outfield, terrific pitching and a great infield. It was a well balanced club in every way."

Frommer covers the regular season and the World Series with just the right touch, making it a very readable account. Interestingly, he addresses whether the Yankees demoralized the Pirates with their batting exhibition prior to the start of the '27 World Series, which they swept in four straight. That story has been often told, but Frommer presents several dissenting views of what some regard as a myth.

Frommer ends the book by telling what happened to each player after the 1927 season as well as how and when they died.

Most Everything You Want To Know About The 1927 Yankees

The author puts together about as much as anyone might want to know about this great team. From the super stars to those who filled out the roster. He recaps the season as well as most of the individual player accomplishments. He even includes the death dates of those participants as well as excerpts from Babe Ruth's final Will and Testament. A good read for anyone interested in this important aspect of baseball history.
